    Lovely campus but unsafe care

I liked the clean, modern campus - lovely river-view apartments, engaging activities, therapy pool, good rehab and very friendly staff (the parrot is a hit). However, care was inconsistent and at times unsafe: slow buzzer responses, missed/late pain meds, unresponsive or rude aides, and even a privacy/abuse concern. It's fine for light assisted living, but I wouldn't trust it for higher medical needs and would look elsewhere.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly mixed: many reviewers praise the facility, staff, therapies, and activities, while a notable minority report serious lapses in medical care, communication, and hygiene. Positive comments are frequent and specific — multiple reviews call out friendly, kind, and dedicated caregivers, name particular staff who made a difference, and highlight strong therapy and transitional care offerings. The facility is often described as clean, modern, and well-maintained, with pleasant apartments (including some river views), laundry and cleaning services, and abundant social programming. The on-site parrot and pool/therapy pool are recurring highlights that residents and visiting family members enjoy. Several reviewers explicitly say their loved ones were well cared for and formed friendships, and hospice/social services are noted as a blessing by some families and staff.

At the same time, a pattern of concerning care inconsistencies emerges in multiple reviews. The most serious and frequently mentioned problem is failure to administer prescribed pain medication promptly or consistently — several accounts describe residents in significant pain and families aghast at delayed or absent pain relief. Related issues include slow nurse response times, long waits for help, buzzer delays, and reports that therapists or certain staff do not show up as scheduled. External communication problems are also common: phone calls and messages to the facility sometimes go unanswered, creating frustration for families and prospective residents.

Cleanliness and safety are areas of contradiction. Many reviews praise the facility as clean, odor-free, and modern, yet there are specific, alarming reports of hygiene lapses: overflowing bathroom trash, items left on floors, unmade or disgusting beds, mattress issues (sliding, inadequate fall protection), and empty hand sanitizer dispensers. A few reviews describe privacy violations and abusive treatment (forced strip showers, removal of pain-relief patches), which are serious allegations that stand in stark contrast to the many positive care accounts. These conflicting reports suggest variability in staff behavior and oversight — excellent care in many instances, but some incidents severe enough that families warn others to avoid the facility.

Dining and amenities receive mixed feedback. Several reviewers enjoy the food, praise made-to-order breakfasts and plentiful portions, and appreciate table companionship. Other reviews criticize the food for being salty or poor and call the dining room dark. Activities programming is consistently praised: monthly schedules, indoor and outdoor events, therapy animals, classes (including opera), and social engagement are strong selling points. The parrot is repeatedly cited as a unique and enjoyable feature, though one note cautioned that the bird can bite if provoked. The facility’s recreational offerings — especially the pool and therapy pool — are highlighted positively by many residents.

Management, staffing consistency, and value are recurring concerns. Some reviewers describe outstanding leadership and staff responsiveness, while others cite rude or unresponsive caretakers, language barriers, and poor customer service for outside inquiries. Cost is mentioned as high by a few families, with at least one review describing poor value given the care issues encountered. There are also comments about limited outdoor green space and lack of a dog-walking area, and a busy street outside that restricts safe outdoor walking.

In summary, Shaller Family Sholom East Campus appears to offer many strengths: compassionate caregivers, robust therapy and activity programs, a clean and modern environment in many areas, and amenities that foster social engagement. However, there are recurring and serious concerns — most critically, inconsistent nursing care and medication administration failures, occasional hygiene and safety lapses, and troubling reports of abusive or negligent behavior by a small number of staff. Experiences appear highly variable depending on unit, shift, or individual caregivers. Prospective residents and families should weigh the positive community and therapy offerings against these safety and care consistency concerns. When considering this facility, it would be prudent to ask targeted questions about pain management protocols and staffing ratios, observe mealtime and activity periods, request recent infection-control and inspection records, inquire about how complaints and alleged abuse are handled, and speak directly with current families or residents about recent experiences to get a clearer sense of day-to-day reliability.

About Shaller Family Sholom East Campus

Shaller Family Sholom East Campus sits at 740 Kay Ave in the West 7th neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and is connected to Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East. The campus offers many types of senior living, like independent living, assisted living, memory care, transitional care, short-term respite care, and long-term nursing care, so folks can move between them as their needs change, and couples with different care levels can stay together. The apartments include studios, single rooms, and two-bedroom units, ranging in price from $2,000 to $8,000 per month, and there are some pet-friendly units, single-family homes, condos, and townhomes too. Each living space usually comes with its own kitchen or kitchenette, private bath with a full shower, safety features like sprinklers, housekeeping, washers and dryers, and even cable TV, and all of them are maintained by the staff.

The facility runs on Jewish values and has a strong Jewish community focus, so you'll see things like kosher meals and snacks, Jewish education programs for all ages, cultural connections, and observance of Jewish traditions, though they welcome people of all backgrounds and offer interfaith spiritual activities too. There's bilingual staff on hand, including people who speak Russian and Yiddish. There are eight "households" or clusters of private rooms, though a few double rooms exist. The care model uses a neighborhood approach, so personal care assistants and nurses help folks at any hour, providing skilled nursing, assisted living, complex medical care, and special end-of-life support. The memory care at the Phillips Center features dementia-specific activities, and there's a Welcome Home Program that helps with everyday transitions.

There are many activities and amenities, like a library, outdoor rooftop patios, walking paths, gardens, a beauty salon, barbershop, dining room, therapy and fitness areas, guest parking, and Wi-Fi throughout the property, plus game and activity rooms for social events or celebrating with family and friends. The Feinberg Vitality & Aquatics Center has a warm-water pool for aquatic therapy, and there's an adult day center, therapy department for physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and outpatient rehab services. The staff provides housekeeping, dry cleaning, laundry, maintenance, and rides for errands, outings, and appointments. Residents have access to daily life enrichment programs, health and wellness classes, music and pet therapies, arts and crafts, social groups, education programs, volunteer opportunities, and caregiver resources. Shaller Family Sholom East Campus offers support for adult mental health and well-being through the Chai Wellness program, along with hospice and palliative care when needed.

The place is secured around the clock with security and emergency response, and the grounds include lots of outdoor places to relax or walk safely. The dining services prepare kosher food and handle dietary needs, and the facilities have safety and accessibility features for those who need them. Additional community programs include the Torches of Leadership initiative, the Cardozo Society, Harry Kay Center for Leadership Excellence, and Gimel Society legacy giving-all aimed at building connection, identity, and supporting greater Saint Paul. Residents who want to stay active in the Jewish or larger Twin Cities community can take part in philanthropic events, adult leadership programs, youth mentorship, or just day-to-day engagement. The campus provides a straightforward, caring environment that focuses on personal dignity, comfort, and quality of life.
