    Caring staff but inconsistent service

My mom loves Vermilion Senior Living - the view, peaceful setting, fun activities and many staff (director and nurses especially) have been genuinely caring. That said, we experienced troubling issues: some employees were rude or refused help, rooms and linens were sometimes dirty, food was poor, crisis support was inconsistent, and there were even reports of theft and regulatory complaints. Management appears to be changing and things seem improved, but I'd recommend verifying current staff and cleanliness before deciding.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews for Vermilion Senior Living are sharply mixed, with a substantial number of strongly positive accounts coexisting alongside serious negative complaints. Several reviewers praise the facility as family-owned with new management and highlight an empathetic director and caring clinical staff. Those positive accounts describe well-maintained premises, a peaceful environment with an attractive view, engaging daily activities, and staff who go above and beyond — leading some families to say their relatives are happy and well cared for and to highly recommend the community.

Staff and care quality: A clear pattern emerges of polarized experience with staff. Multiple reviewers describe compassionate, attentive employees — specifically calling out a wonderful director and caring nurses — while others report rude, unhelpful, or desk-bound employees who refuse to assist and say "that's not my job." Several negative reports allege neglect of personal care (examples include messy hair and unprepared rooms) and a lack of assistance during urgent or sensitive situations. The contrast suggests notable inconsistency in staff performance, which could reflect variable shift coverage, differences between long-tenured versus newer employees, or recent staffing turnover under new management.

Facilities, cleanliness, and housekeeping: Cleanliness and housekeeping are another area of dispute. Positive reviews state the building is well maintained, but multiple negative summaries cite dirty rooms, soiled blankets, and dirty bathrooms, as well as inconsistent laundry service. These repeated complaints about linens and room cleanliness point to potential operational problems with housekeeping processes or staffing levels that affect routine maintenance.

Safety, crisis response, and logistics: Several reviews raise significant concerns about emergency or high-stakes handling. Reported failures include no assistance during a crisis and an instance where staff refused to assist with funeral logistics — even declining to help with a hearse because of ice. Such reports, if accurate, indicate shortcomings in crisis protocols, transportation coordination, or administrative willingness to support families during sensitive events.

Dining, activities, and resident life: Comments on dining are polarized: some reviewers explicitly describe the food as "horrible," while others emphasize that daily activities are fun and residents are happy. This split suggests that while programming and social engagement may be strengths, the food service experience is inconsistent and may be an area needing attention.

Management, ownership, and allegations: Several positive reviews credit new management, family ownership, and an exceptional director for recent improvements. Conversely, some negative comments target management as rude or unhelpful, and one set of reviews mentions that complaints were reported to the state. There is also an allegation of staff theft in the negative summaries. One review summary notes that negative commenters may include upset employees who were fired; this indicates that some negative material may reflect personnel disputes, though other negative reports come from families and describe concrete service failures.

Overall assessment and patterns: The dominant pattern is variability — simultaneous reports of exemplary caregiving and troubling lapses. Strengths consistently mentioned are personal, compassionate employees (in multiple reviews), an attractive, peaceful environment, and engaging activities. Recurring weaknesses include perceived understaffing, inconsistent training or competence among staff, cleanliness and laundry problems, poor food quality in some accounts, problematic crisis and logistical support, and serious allegations such as theft and state complaints. Given the mixed record, prospective families should weigh both sets of reports: the facility appears capable of providing very good, attentive care under favorable staffing and leadership, but there are credible recurring complaints that suggest systemic or operational issues that can materially affect resident experience.

What to look for when evaluating further: When considering Vermilion Senior Living, potential residents and families should directly assess staffing levels, observe meal service, inspect rooms and bathrooms for cleanliness, ask about laundry and housekeeping protocols, inquire how the community handles emergencies and funeral logistics, and request recent inspection or complaint history from state regulators. Speaking with current resident families and observing different shifts can help clarify whether positive experiences are typical or limited to certain staff members or times. The reviews indicate both notable strengths and definite risks, so an in-person, targeted evaluation is advisable to determine whether the facility's current practices meet a given family's expectations and needs.

Vermilion Senior Living sits in Tower, MN, and provides both assisted and memory care for people aged 55 and older, and the place offers studio or one-bedroom apartments-with studios having enough space for basic furniture and the one-bedrooms being 540 square feet with a kitchenette and living room-and there are also four larger corner units with big picture windows, and all apartments are smoke-free and come with air conditioning, bathtubs, and Wi-Fi so people can stay comfortable. Folks living there get three home-cooked meals and snacks made fresh each day, with menu choices and in-between snacks, and there's a big dining room for everyone plus a private dining room for parties with family or friends, so meal times aim for comfort and fellowship. Caregiver staff, including licensed nurses and an RN director, are on duty all day and night, helping with medication, bathing, dressing, moving about, managing diabetes by checking blood sugar, monitoring incontinence for those who can manage on their own, and even helping non-ambulatory residents get from bed to wheelchair as needed, but they don't give insulin shots, and staff use a call pendant system for resident safety. Maintenance is handled for everyone and includes lawn care, snow shoveling, and taking out trash, so residents don't have to worry about those chores, and weekly housekeeping and laundry keep rooms tidy without much effort from anyone. People who live here have a range of activities to join, from bible study and weekly worship with frequent clergy visits to on-site gatherings, live music, Wii bowling, and even trips to local places and community service work if they like getting out, and there's a game room, a piano or organ for music, and meeting and TV lounges for smaller groups. The beauty shop and whirlpool provide comfort and relaxation, while scheduled rides help people get to medical appointments or local attractions, and mail is picked up and delivered regularly. The community, with health care and therapy visits available, supports independence as much as possible and helps people stay social, and the place allows both cats and dogs, with some rules about pet size in place. Vermilion charges a community fee and separate care-specific fees, including the possibility of respite care or fees for the level of care needed, and accepts private pay, social security, veteran's benefits, and commercial insurance. Staff are usually seen as helpful and kind, making the place feel friendly, and everything's arranged to create a safe and quiet environment with opportunities for fun or restful days, depending on how someone feels.
