    Caring responsive staff, highly recommended

I placed my mom at Southview and overall I'm very happy - the staff are caring, responsive (even after-hours) and feel like family, with RNs on staff, three levels of care, excellent food, very clean facilities, lots of activities/outings, and a homey, well-kept campus. Be aware we had a double-booked room and there are smaller upstairs rooms and a slow creaky elevator. Despite that, care and staff are top-notch and I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Southview Senior Living is strongly positive. Reviewers consistently highlight the facility itself as attractive, well-maintained, and homey, with many noting it as "top notch." The grounds and common areas are frequently praised — a garden with a walking path, fountain, flowers, and open living/activity rooms contribute to an inviting environment. Multiple comments emphasize that the community strikes a good balance in size: not too large, not too small, which reviewers feel supports a comfortable, community-oriented atmosphere.

Care quality and staff performance are among the most commonly mentioned strengths. Reviewers repeatedly describe staff as engaged, caring, friendly, and responsive; several say staff go "above and beyond," and some specifically remark that staff feel like family. The presence of licensed clinical staff is noted positively: RNs and a nurse on staff were explicitly called out, and after-hours responsiveness was praised. Many reviewers attest to good or excellent care for residents, including those with dementia, and appreciate a locked memory care area that supports safety while promoting as much independence as possible.

Facilities and living spaces receive largely favorable comments but with some variation. Many units are described as large studios with high ceilings and open windows, and apartments are called nice and comfortable. At the same time, a recurring concern is that some rooms are smaller — one reviewer described an "upstairs closet-like room." This indicates variability in unit sizes and layouts across the community. The property itself is described as clean, neat, and well kept, and the location and aesthetics (beautiful location, attractive common spaces) are strong pluses.

Activity programming and social life are major selling points. Reviews list a wide variety of daily activities — games, exercise, music, movies, daytime activities, and social events like picnics, barbecues, happy hours, and brunches. Organized outings and trips to local events are mentioned positively, giving residents opportunities to remain engaged with the broader community. Reviewers perceive a lively social calendar and appreciate the diversity of offerings for residents at different care levels.

Dining and costs are also favorably reported. Food quality is described as "very good," with a noted good variety of meals. Several reviewers cite reasonable pricing relative to the services and amenities offered, which reinforces the perception of value. Combined with the clinical coverage (three levels of care: independent, assisted, memory care), the community is seen as a practical option for families seeking continuity of care as needs change.

Notable concerns and operational issues are relatively limited but important to mention. A few reviewers reported administrative missteps — specifically, a double-booked room — which points to occasional coordination or management lapses. Physical infrastructure issues were raised, most prominently a slow, creaky elevator described as potentially unsafe. Additionally, while many reviewers praised staffing, some described staffing levels as merely "adequate," suggesting that there may be times when resources feel stretched. The variability in unit sizes and the specific report of a very small upstairs room indicate it would be prudent for prospective residents and families to tour multiple unit types and ask about alternatives.

In summary, the reviews portray Southview Senior Living as a well-regarded community with strong caregiving, a warm and homey atmosphere, attractive grounds, comprehensive activity programming, and good food — all delivered at a reasonable price point. The presence of clinical staff (RNs) and three levels of care add to its appeal for families looking for continuity and safety. Prospective residents should, however, confirm unit size and layout availability during tours, inquire about elevator condition and maintenance plans, and clarify booking/administrative processes to avoid occasional scheduling errors. Overall, reviewers overwhelmingly recommend Southview, with praise for staff, cleanliness, and quality of life indicators making it a compelling choice for many families and residents.

    About Southview Senior Living

Southview Senior Living sits over on Oakdale Avenue in West St. Paul, and you'll find a big range of care options there, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care all in one place, so if someone needs more help as they get older, they don't have to move far. The buildings have comfortable apartments with layouts of different sizes, all with things like full kitchens, no matter if it's independent living or memory care, and that helps folks keep some independence and lets family come by for visits or even a meal. There's a focus on safety, too, with things like fire and smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, individually controlled heating and cooling in every apartment, appliances that can be turned off and locked in memory care, and a 24-hour emergency call system, as well as daily wellness checks. The rent covers water, sewer, on-site trash pickup, and apartment maintenance, with a month-to-month lease, which makes moving in or adjusting plans simpler than some of the places that require bigger commitments.

The community's set up with places like a community room, a library, a fitness center, and a movie theater, and all residents can use complimentary laundry facilities, stop by for daily afternoon coffee and cookies, and take part in a lot of planned social events and activities, so no one has to feel alone unless they want to. Southview is pet-friendly, as long as guidelines are followed. A licensed RN checks in with residents and creates personalized care packages, and there are optional à la carte services for anyone who wants extra help. The dining rooms are attractive, and a professional chef makes home-cooked meals every day, serving continental breakfast with coffee, juice, and hot chocolate machines available, plus restaurant-style lunch and supper, keeping dietary needs and restrictions in mind. Memory care runs with specialized programs, 24-hour staff, and apartments made to support folks with memory loss, like Alzheimer's or dementia, and there's a focus on supporting people who have disabilities or health issues, making sure they can find the right balance of freedom and help.

Southview Senior Living is family-owned and managed by people who want to make the building feel comfortable, safe, and homelike, with encouragement for families to get involved. Residents can take part in exercise classes, field trips, live performances, and other daily activities, always with friendly staff nearby. The management oversees the whole operation, giving attention to community life, maintenance, and health. Southview is also connected to other communities, such as Brookdale West St. Paul, The Lodge in Mendota, and Brookdale Inver Grove Heights, offering more local options if folks want to stay close to friends and relatives. There's a website where people can sign up for information, look up costs, and even schedule tours in person or virtually, so no one has to come in cold, and people can get a sense for the community by meeting staff and residents and seeing the rooms, amenities, and kitchen areas for themselves. The aim at Southview Senior Living is to help each person get the care they need, whether they're mainly independent, need some daily support, or live with memory issues, while providing comfortable apartments, reliable meals, and a calendar full of activities.
