    Caring staff, comfortable, minor issues

I love this smaller, home-like community - the staff are caring, attentive, and communicative, activities are varied and lively (bingo, exercise, parties, gardening, pontoon rides), and my spacious one-bed apartment is clean and comfortable at a reasonable price. Rehab and daily care have been good and residents are friendly, though it's an older building and the food is inconsistent (cold/incorrect meals at times - bring backups), and I've noticed occasional responsiveness issues (med timing, call-button delays). Overall I'm very satisfied and hopeful about staying long-term.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Cerenity Residence White Bear Lake are overwhelmingly positive, with the dominant themes being highly engaged, compassionate staff; a warm, home-like community; robust activity programming; and spacious apartments. Many reviewers describe attentive and communicative caregivers who make regular proactive check-ins, adjust care levels as needs change, and build personable relationships with residents. The facility’s smaller size and engaged staff are repeatedly praised for creating a family-like atmosphere where residents are involved and valued.

Staff and care quality: Staff performance is the strongest, most consistently praised aspect across reviews. Multiple comments highlight abundant staff presence, long-tenured recreation employees, and specific staff members who went above and beyond (e.g., positive mention of a staff member by name). Recreation and caregiving staff are described as in-tune with residents, compassionate, and helpful — contributing to improved resident safety and well-being. Several reviewers note good rehab outcomes and overall satisfaction with clinical care. That said, a minority of reviews raise concerns about responsiveness and administrative follow-through: isolated accounts describe delayed responses to call buttons, medication timing issues, and unsatisfactory handling of insurance or compliance-related processes. These concerns appear less common but are notable because they touch on safety and operations.

Activities and engagement: Activity programming is a clear strength. Reviewers report a wide variety of offerings — chair exercises, music, bingo, balloon volleyball, gardening, animal visits, movie nights, card games, summer pontoon rides, and frequent social events/parties. Many reviews praise how activities are changed regularly (every one to two weeks) and how the recreation team maintains high engagement, which contributes strongly to quality of life and social interaction. The frequent, varied programming and high resident participation are recurring positive points.

Dining and meals: Dining feedback is mixed and somewhat polarized. Several reviewers say the menu is good, residents (including parents) enjoy meals, and two meals per day are included, which many appreciate. Conversely, multiple other reviews report poor dining experiences — tasteless dishes, cold or incorrect orders, and inconsistent service. Some residents or families recommended bringing supplemental food or a microwave to reheat meals. The pattern suggests that while the menu and mealtime structure are acceptable to many, there are reliability and quality-control issues in the dining operation that the facility should address.

Facilities and accommodations: The physical accommodations receive frequent praise: spacious one-bedroom apartments with kitchen/living areas, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, large private rooms, and pleasant common spaces. Reviewers often call the rooms big, clean, and homey. At the same time, the facility is described as older with some dated rooms and smaller unit sizes in places, and there is limited outdoor space for those who expect large grounds. A few reviews note longer-than-ideal walks from common areas to certain rooms. Overall, reviewers find the balance of space, cleanliness, and a smaller community layout favorable.

Management, cost, and demand: Pricing is generally viewed as reasonable and competitive — described as an "in-between" price point and better than some alternatives. Several reviewers note that pricing adjusts appropriately with increased care needs. The facility appears to be in demand: it is frequently at or near full capacity with a long waiting list, which many families interpret as a positive indicator of quality. A few reviews mentioned administrative challenges — especially related to insurance processing and compliance — and one review raised a serious-sounding concern about accreditation risk. While this is not a common theme, such administrative issues are important to verify directly with management.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The single most consistent strengths are staff compassion/communication, engaging activity programming, and comfortable living spaces. The main areas to watch or verify when considering this community are dining consistency and food quality, timeliness of medication and call-button responses, and any administrative or compliance histories. Several reviewers reported "initial bumps" that improved with time and staff attention, suggesting that early onboarding or communication may mitigate some concerns. Practical tips from reviewers include bringing a personal microwave or supplemental food, touring to check apartment condition (since some rooms are older), and confirming current waitlist status.

Bottom line: Cerenity Residence White Bear Lake is broadly regarded as a caring, well-run smaller community with strong social programming, attentive staff, and roomy apartments at a reasonable cost. Most families and residents report positive experiences, improved well-being, and high engagement. However, prospective residents should confirm current dining practices, medication administration protocols, responsiveness standards, and any administrative or compliance issues during their tour to ensure consistency with their expectations. Overall, the facility’s strengths in staff engagement and activities make it a compelling option, with a few operational items worth verifying before committing.

Cerenity Residence White Bear Lake sits in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and has 43 apartments designed for seniors aged 55 and older who need different levels of care, whether it's assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, or short-term respite care, so folks who want to be as independent as possible but could use some extra support seem to find their needs met here, and there's a month-to-month lease arrangement, too. The building has three floors, and the one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments come with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, basic appliances, storage space, and living rooms, plus there are options for both private and shared suites in the memory care unit, which accepts Medical Assistance payments and supports people all the way through late-stage dementia. Every day, staff check in to make sure everyone's okay, and there's someone on site 24/7; a nurse and specialized staff help create care plans that fit each resident's needs and encourage as much independence as possible, and there's a full range of care services right on campus, from skilled nursing and medication reminders to hospice and rehabilitation therapy.

Meals are provided three times a day in the dining room, but room service is available and there's a guest meal option if someone has visitors. Residents enjoy weekly housekeeping, in-building laundry, linen services, and scheduled van transportation for shopping or errands, and basic transportation's included, though additional outings and rides can be arranged for a cost. Outdoor spaces include a garden courtyard with raised flower beds, outdoor walking paths, a patio, and nearby neighborhood park, all good for spending time outdoors during warmer weather, and patio spaces overlook grassy areas with trees for some peace and quiet.

For spiritual needs, there's an interfaith chapel on site, regular religious and devotional services, Bible studies, Rosary sessions, and a full-time Spiritual Care Director. A salon or barber service is on hand for personal grooming. The community is smoke-free indoors, with common areas and resident rooms set up to feel comfortable and homey. The residence is connected by a walkway to nearby long-term and transitional care services, and features a well-known therapy department, which even includes a therapy pool for those needing rehab after injury or surgery. The variety of services covers almost everything someone might need as they age-memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, skilled nursing for complex medical needs, respite care for post-surgery recovery, and aging-in-place options so residents don't have to move as their needs change.

Residents and their guests can enjoy restaurant-style dining, and there's a strong sense of a warm, respectful community where neighbors often come from White Bear Lake itself. Security and wellbeing are priorities, with a $1,000 security deposit and a second person fee, and there's a structured program so people can maintain a high quality of life with plenty of activities, inside and out, and support whenever it's needed, all in a setting that honors each person's body, mind, and spirit. About Benedictine

Cerenity Residence White Bear Lake is managed by Benedictine.

Benedictine, established in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, Minnesota, has grown into one of the largest Catholic senior living organizations in the United States, operating over 35 communities across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. With annual revenues reaching billion, approximately 5,000 employees, and over million of senior living assets under management, this faith-based nonprofit organization has experienced significant expansion from a single skilled nursing facility to a multi-state healthcare network through strategic acquisitions, partnerships, sponsorship transitions, and joint ventures.

Under the leadership of President and CEO Jerry Carley, who joined in 2018 bringing over 35 years of senior care experience, Benedictine has maintained its position as an industry leader while preserving its Catholic heritage and mission-driven focus. Carley's leadership has earned significant recognition, including being named to The Minnesota 500 as one of the state's most powerful executives (2018-2020) and designation as one of Minnesota's Most Influential Health Care Leaders by Minnesota Physician Magazine in 2020. His extensive background includes previous roles as president and CEO of CSJ Initiatives and service on LeadingAge Minnesota's board of directors, where he serves as Chair.

Benedictine's innovative memory care program exemplifies their commitment to specialized care through two distinct neighborhoods: Tabitha, named after Sister Tabitha who was the first woman to head a hospital setting, which serves residents with mild to moderate memory loss, and Pauline, honoring Sister Pauline who devoted her life to dementia care, providing specialized support for those with moderate to advanced dementia. These research-based programs employ best practices in dementia care, offering engaging activities, personalized care plans, and family integration support. The organization's comprehensive service continuum extends to Adult Day Programs in Duluth and Winona, providing daytime respite care with trained memory care staff, while facilities like Benedictine Minneapolis specialize in complex medical care including tracheostomy and ventilator support.

The organization's care philosophy centers on nurturing mind, body, and spirit, rooted in Benedictine values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect, and Justice. This holistic approach emphasizes listening with the "ear of the heart," creating welcoming environments where unique needs are respected and each person's spirituality is honored. Through comprehensive rehabilitation services, spiritual care programs led by Director of Spiritual Care Rev. J. Scott Cartwright, and purposeful recreation incorporating art, music therapy, and movement, Benedictine continues the healthcare ministry begun by the Benedictine Sisters over a century ago. Recent strategic decisions, including the 2024 transition of Benedictine Living Community-Wausau to The Ensign Group, demonstrate the organization's commitment to ensuring sustainable, high-quality care while adapting to evolving market dynamics and maintaining their mission of empowering older adults to live to their highest potential.
