    Mostly positive but occasional lapses

I toured and moved my dad here - the grounds, bright large-windowed apartments, homey atmosphere, great food and activities, and proximity to Fairview Hospital impressed me. Staff are mostly friendly, caring, energetic and competent, the place is clean and well-run, and COVID precautions were visible. However, communication and management can be inconsistent: I saw unprofessional behavior (privacy lapses, loud phone conversations), spotty emergency responsiveness, and occasional insufficient help or extra charges. Overall I'm pleased and would recommend it, but expect occasional lapses.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries for Meadows on Fairview is strongly positive, with the dominant themes centering on caring, friendly staff; a clean, attractive facility; comfortable apartments with useful in-room features; and an active, community-oriented environment. Many reviewers emphasize peace of mind, a family-like atmosphere, and the facility’s ability to feel like a home rather than an institution. The property’s appearance, decor (often described as Northwoods-style), bright open spaces and pleasant grounds are repeatedly noted, as are helpful location benefits such as being across from or near Fairview Hospital.

Care quality and staff are the most frequently praised elements. Reviewers repeatedly describe staff as caring, attentive, intelligent, energetic and welcoming. Specific front-desk and office staff members receive name recognition (Anne, Rita, Jodi) for responsiveness and warmth, and leadership (the Director of Nursing) is described as approachable. Multiple comments cite quick responses to call lights, friendly nurses and patient attendants, and an environment that feels safe and supportive for residents. Several reviews also highlight staff longevity and a positive workplace culture, which reviewers say translates into good resident care. There are many notes that the staff are accommodating to families’ needs and that the community is welcoming to new hires and new residents.

The physical plant and amenities come in for consistent praise. The facility is described as clean, well-maintained and well-run, with spacious private apartments often featuring kitchenettes and handicap-accessible bathrooms. On-site amenities such as a beauty salon, patio, large windows, and 24-hour laundry (including a complimentary weekly load) are appreciated. Residents and families cite engaging onsite programming — manicures, bingo, shopping trips and religious services among them — and a robust activities program. Rehab and physical therapy services are mentioned positively, and hospice availability is noted as an important service for some families.

Dining is generally regarded as a strength: many reviews call the meals wonderful, fresh and homemade. However, there is at least one specific complaint about perceived disparity in meal portion sizes between men and women. Activities and social programming are frequently complimented and are a clear contributor to resident satisfaction, as are conveniences such as the facility’s location close to a hospital and its inviting communal spaces.

Despite the many positives, there are notable negative patterns that prospective residents and families should consider. The most serious recurring concern is inconsistency in emergency responsiveness; a few reviewers report occasions when staff were unresponsive and an emergency response was poor (one reviewer said they had to bang on a wall to get help). There are also isolated but significant reports of unprofessional staff behavior — including privacy violations and loud, inappropriate phone conversations — and complaints about poor communication or management in some cases. A subset of reviews expresses frustration about extra charges for assistance and an overall perception that the community is expensive. Some reviewers feel assistance is sometimes insufficient, and others mention that the facility’s large size may at times reduce individualized attention.

Other more minor but repeated issues include occasional problems related to HVAC/airflow (a vent fan incident and concerns about air exchange related to COVID precautions), and the noted meal portion disparity. Importantly, these negatives appear alongside overwhelmingly positive statements from many other reviewers, suggesting variability in experience that may depend on timing, specific staff on duty, or individual resident needs.

In summary, Meadows on Fairview is commonly characterized by warm, attentive staff, clean and attractive accommodations, a breadth of amenities and activities, and convenient hospital-adjacent location. These strengths produce a strong sense of safety, community and satisfaction for many residents and families. Prospective residents should also weigh the reported downsides — especially occasional problems with emergency responsiveness, isolated professionalism and communication issues, and perceived cost/extras. Visiting in person, asking targeted questions about emergency procedures and response times, staffing levels across shifts, and clarifying what services incur extra charges would help families determine whether Meadows on Fairview’s broadly positive environment aligns with their priorities and care needs.
