    Caring staff but dingy facility

My dad lives here. It's close and offers three good meals a day, transportation to doctors, rehab and long-term/Alzheimer's care, and the staff are knowledgeable, caring and often know him by name - they call to update me about issues and med changes. That said, parts of the building feel dingy and need painting and better housekeeping (dirty rooms/toilets, missed showers), and they could use more staff. COVID visitor restrictions were hard, but overall my dad seems content.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is mixed but leans toward positive in terms of staff quality and services, while highlighting notable concerns about cleanliness, staffing levels, and the physical condition of the facility. A clear majority of comments praise the caregiving team — many reviewers describe staff as friendly, compassionate, hard-working and knowledgeable. Multiple reviewers specifically note that staff know residents by name and that staff call to inform families about issues, indicating strong personal attention and communication. These positives are reinforced by mentions that residents appear content, med changes are handled, and the facility offers important services such as a rehab program, long-term care, and an Alzheimer's unit.

Care quality and staff: The strongest, most consistent theme is the quality of frontline staff. Several reviewers singled out caring, respectful, and compassionate treatment; staff who are attentive and maintain good communication with residents and families; and hardworking personnel who provide good service. However, this praise is not unanimous. A subset of reviews reports unfriendly staff behavior and poor interactions. This divergence suggests unevenness in staff performance or variability between shifts or employees. Another recurrent point is that the facility could use more staff — staffing shortages are explicitly mentioned and tied to negative outcomes like missed showers and potential declines in housekeeping or personalized care.

Facility condition and housekeeping: Reviews show a clear split regarding cleanliness and the physical environment. Some reviewers call the facility clean and pleasant, but others describe rooms and bathrooms as dirty, toilets unclean, and housekeeping as failing to perform essential tasks. Several comments characterize the building as dark, dingy, and depressing, with recommendations for painting and updates. These negative descriptions are serious and concrete (e.g., unclean toilets, dirty rooms, missed showers) and contrast sharply with accounts of a clean facility, indicating inconsistent standards of cleanliness across time or among different parts of the building.

Dining, activities, and rules: Dining receives generally positive feedback — reviewers note good food and three meals daily. There are fewer comments about structured activities beyond a mention that the facility is "strict about exercise," which could be interpreted positively (structured routine) or negatively (overly rigid), depending on resident preference. Transportation services to medical appointments are a clear plus, as is the availability of rehabilitation services and specialized care for memory-impaired residents.

Management, communication, and COVID impact: Communication from staff to families is frequently praised; several reviewers appreciate being called about issues and being kept informed. At the same time, management-related concerns surface indirectly through comments about insufficient staffing and maintenance issues. COVID-related visitation restrictions were cited as a barrier to in-person family visits, which affected the perceived experience for at least one resident’s family. Reviews also include a very negative outlier stating the stay was "not worth one star," reflecting that some experiences were significantly below expectations.

Patterns and recommendations: The dominant pattern is that the quality of care and interpersonal treatment by staff is a strong asset of McDonald County Living Center, while consistency in housekeeping, staffing levels, and facility upkeep are key weaknesses. To reconcile these mixed reviews, prospective residents and families should consider visiting in person, asking about current staffing ratios and housekeeping protocols, and requesting a tour of the specific room/unit being offered. Management might prioritize addressing housekeeping consistency, increase staffing levels or adjust scheduling, and invest in aesthetic updates to brighten and modernize the building. Maintaining the strong communication and compassionate caregiving already noted in many reviews while addressing the operational and environmental issues would likely resolve the most critical concerns raised by reviewers.

    About McDonald County Living Center

McDonald County Living Center sits at 1000 Patterson Street in Anderson, Missouri, and has 96 certified beds for residents who need different kinds of care, and while the facility offers skilled nursing, long-term care, and respite services for people who may have complex medical needs or need just a little help for a short time, they also focus on activities to help people stay social and active, which means there's a calendar with various options for residents who want to join in on recreational events or just meet with friends. The caregivers and staff, who put in about 3.29 nurse hours per resident every day, help residents with daily needs, offer nutrition and dietary support, run memory care programs in a secure setting-complete with alert systems for people with dementia and a special outdoor area, and they're trained to work with Alzheimer's or other memory problems. Residents can use transportation for getting to appointments, go to therapy services like physical, occupational, or speech therapy, and follow personalized care plans made under a doctor's supervision, and people can even take a virtual tour of the facility before moving in. The staff also work hard to keep the place supportive so everyone feels welcome, though inspection records show the facility with 13 documented deficiencies over time, one related to infection control, one for nutrition and food handling, another for pressure ulcer care, and another about transferring or hospice services, and while the staff tries to do a good job, the nurse turnover rate is 49.1 percent, which means sometimes new faces show up fairly often, and management has been under Ltc Management Services LLC since 2016, with Timothy Drake leading since late 2021, and James and Judy Lincoln each owning 50 percent. Residents can pay their bills online using the "Pay My Bill" feature, families can visit Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, and there are options for personal and complex medical support, general counseling, and other health care services, with a goal to help residents reach the best possible quality of physical, mental, and social well-being while living in the facility. For those considering a move, there are options to schedule a tour and learn more on the center's website at www.mcdonaldcolivingcenter.com.
