    Friendly staff, clean, occasional issues

I live here and overall I'm pleased. The staff - especially the nursing and long-tenured caregivers - are friendly, caring and accommodating; residents are sociable and activities (bingo, sing-alongs, church, dancing) are plentiful. The facility is clean and well-kept, dining is generally good and the place offers decent value, though some apartment layouts and occasional maintenance issues may not suit everyone. I have noticed sporadic front-office/management unprofessionalism and a few care concerns, but I would still recommend this place for folks needing this level of care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the provided reviews is largely positive, with many reviewers praising the people, atmosphere, and amenities at The Village Retirement Community. The strongest and most frequently mentioned strengths are the staff and social environment: multiple reviewers described staff as caring, professional, friendly, and family-like. Visitors and residents emphasize a sociable, upbeat culture with residents forming camaraderie and many long-term residents, which suggests continuity and resident satisfaction over time. Several comments specifically call out accommodating and excellent staff, as well as strong nursing care in at least one review.

Activities and programming are another recurring positive theme. Reviewers repeatedly mention a variety of organized activities including church services, bingo, sing-alongs, singing and dancing, card playing, and holiday events. An activities calendar is noted and used, and the programming appears to support resident engagement and a lively community. The dining experience is also generally praised — descriptors such as delicious, hot, creative, and pleasing meals appear multiple times, although a few reviewers note occasional menu items that were not their first choice.

Facility condition and amenities receive mostly favorable comments: the building is described as clean, well-kept, and comfortable. Multiple reviewers noted good-sized rooms with closets and private bathrooms, laundry facilities, and a well-maintained dining area. Independent living two-room apartments are available and are appealing to many prospective residents. Location and perceived value are also cited as reasons people choose the community.

However, there are important, significant concerns raised that temper the overall positive tone. A small but serious cluster of reviews alleges poor care: a resident in pain, staff not changing a resident promptly, and accusations that CMAs were passing narcotics outside their certification. Those comments include explicit calls for management action (naming the director of nursing), indicating at least one instance of perceived neglect and possible improper medication handling. These allegations are severe and conflict sharply with the many positive statements about caring staff and excellent nursing, suggesting inconsistency in care quality or isolated but impactful incidents.

Management and staff consistency appear to be mixed. While many reviewers praise staff friendliness and helpfulness, a few call out rude or unprofessional behavior from front office personnel and broader management concerns. There are also notes that some apartments are not satisfactory for every prospective resident (for example, lacking a shower), and at least one reviewer mentioned maintenance needs — though other reviews counter that by saying maintenance is good and rooms are clean. This indicates variability: many practical aspects (room layout, bathroom features, responsiveness of maintenance) may depend on the specific unit or staff on duty.

In summary, The Village Retirement Community is portrayed predominantly as a warm, active, and well-maintained community with strong social programming, generally good dining, and many reviews praising caring and long-tenured staff. Prospective residents and families will likely find the environment friendly, with good value and convenient location. However, there are notable red flags in a few reviews relating to care lapses, medication handling, and front office professionalism. These concerns merit direct follow-up: ask management for details about staff training, medication administration protocols, recent quality audits, incident reports, and how they address complaints. Also inspect apartment layouts (showers vs. tubs) and confirm maintenance response expectations to ensure the unit meets the prospective resident’s needs.

    About The Village Retirement Community

The Village Retirement Community in Cameron, Missouri, has served seniors since 1983 and sits next to Village Senior Residence, so folks get a range of choices for independent or assisted living, and it's been managed by The Goodman Group, who have over 55 years of experience in senior living and healthcare, and you'll notice right away the common spaces are beautiful and make it easy to mingle. The community offers independent living for active seniors, residential care for those who want extra support with daily activities, and assisted living for people who need some help, and if someone's struggling with memory issues like Alzheimer's, there's memory care that uses special environments to help residents feel calm and safe. The Platinum Service program includes long-term care, memory care, and respite care, and there are private apartments, some pet-friendly ones too, and even some rooms that got converted from shared spaces into private accommodations during recent renovations. The staff includes a Director of Nursing, Certified Medication Technicians, Certified Medication Assistants, Certified Nursing Assistants, and a house doctor, so there are always trained professionals ready to help with things like medication, daily care, or health services, even for folks who need non-ambulatory, diabetic, or incontinence care. Meals are prepared fresh, and residents usually get one or two nutritious meals a day, and there's laundry and housekeeping services along with activities like group exercise, socials, spa treatments, educational clubs, devotional events, and social dining, so there's plenty to do, whether indoors or outside in the common areas, and the transportation is handled, as residents can get rides or park their own cars if they drive. The Village also offers Comfort Care Hospice for those needing that extra level of support at home, and aides are available for companionship and non-medical care. The residents generally need to be at least 55 or 62, depending on the part of the community they pick, and each apartment or residential room has features like wheelchair access and showers, and residents can bring their own furnishings to the independent apartments if they want. Folks who live here like the focus on creating a warm atmosphere where everyone can take part in social activities, get help if needed, and keep up their wellbeing, and the staff and owners like Lisa Stickley, Trusten Chris Wilkinson, and Ronnie Wilkinson work to make sure the place feels comfortable and supportive every day.
