    Beautiful facility but memory concerns

I moved my mom in about a year ago and overall it's a beautiful, very clean, home-like place with spacious apartments, great dining, lots of activities and many genuinely caring, attentive staff. Move-in was smooth and leadership was helpful and responsive at first; the small, intimate community feels welcoming. It is pricey and mostly private-pay with many a la carte charges, and I would warn families to ask detailed questions about Memory Care - we've seen turnover, poor communication and a few serious lapses there. If you want a clean, friendly, activity-filled assisted living and can afford it, I recommend visiting - just be cautious if advanced dementia care is the primary need.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews of Westview at Ellisville present a mixed but strongly polarized view. Many reviewers praise the community as a bright, new, well-kept, and home-like assisted living option with friendly staff and robust social programming. At the same time, a recurring thread of serious operational and care concerns—most pronounced in Memory Care and tied to staff turnover and management responsiveness—gives rise to multiple warnings and a clear pattern of inconsistent experiences. Prospective families are likely to encounter very good Assisted Living experiences but should be cautious and perform focused due diligence regarding Memory Care and administrative responsiveness.

Facilities and environment: The building and grounds receive overwhelmingly positive feedback. Reviewers commonly describe Westview as a new or newer facility that is bright, modern, clean, and well-maintained, with ample natural light, pleasant grounds, and odor-free common areas. Apartments are repeatedly described as spacious with good storage, accessible bathrooms (no-step showers), and full-size kitchen appliances in some units. Amenities such as a salon, gym, library, patio, private dining, and onsite therapy are frequently mentioned and contribute to a residential, non-institutional feel for many residents. Location and setting (quiet, wooded) are also appreciated.

Staff and caregiving quality: Staffing is the single most mixed area. A large number of reviews praise direct-care staff, dining servers, therapists, and some long-tenured caregivers for being compassionate, responsive, and attentive — specific staff members are often named and lauded. Admissions, move-in support, and day-to-day staff interactions are frequently cited as smooth and thoughtful. Conversely, there is a substantial and recurring set of criticisms: high turnover (notably management and Memory Care leadership), unruly or rude behavior by some Memory Care staff or directors, and shifts where caregiving is inadequate. The net effect reported by families is a community that can be excellent when stable staff are on duty, but vulnerable to lapses and worse outcomes when turnover or understaffing occur.

Memory Care and safety concerns: Memory Care emerges as the most problematic area with repeated, serious complaints. Multiple reviewers reported falls resulting in fractures, delayed notification to families, unexplained bruises, bedsores, toileting neglect, and even allegations of unethical or deceptive behavior by leadership. Other serious allegations include theft and statements that reports were not filed. Families reported incidents where ambulances were called and residents sent to hospitals without family permission or notification. These are not isolated minor gripes—several reviews indicate residents were subsequently moved out and families sought other facilities. In contrast, a subset of reviews also praise Memory Care staff for excellent, loving care, demonstrating substantial inconsistency across time and staff.

Activities, therapy, and social life: Activity programming is a strong selling point when fully staffed: residents enjoy varied offerings such as Wii bowling, music, outings, exercise classes, socials, and field trips. Therapy services (PT/OT) receive consistent praise, with several reviewers calling the therapy and wellness teams “outstanding” or “phenomenal.” However, the activity program’s quality appears tied to the presence of a dedicated Activity Director; when that person leaves, families reported a noticeable drop-off in offerings until someone else was hired.

Dining and food services: Dining feedback is mixed but detailed. Many families and residents enjoy restaurant-style dining, desserts, and a varied menu with daily specials; several reviewers noted improvement after a chef change. Conversely, other reviewers report bland, overcooked, or not “elderly-friendly” meals, slow breakfast service, and inconsistent kitchen staff competence. Dining staff and servers are more often praised than kitchen staff, though opinions vary significantly across reviewers.

Management, communication, and operational issues: Reviewers repeatedly mention concerns about management responsiveness. Complaints about slow or dismissive administrative reactions, unfiled incident reports, difficulty reaching managers, and unresolved billing or refund disputes are common. Several reviewers described an erosion in service and atmosphere following management turnover or post-COVID changes. Move-in processes are generally described as helpful but occasionally rushed or with missing paperwork. Pricing and billing are another area of concern for some: the community is private-pay only (no Medicaid), has ala-carte fees, and some families find pricing inflexible or high compared to perceived value when higher-level care is needed.

Patterns and recommendations: Synthesizing across reviews shows two dominant patterns. First, Westview often provides a very positive Assisted Living experience: attractive environment, social opportunities, responsive direct-care staff, and strong therapy services. Second, Memory Care and consistent leadership/staffing stability are recurrent problem areas, with some reviews indicating serious safety and communication lapses. Many families strongly recommend Westview for residents who need routine assisted living and social engagement, while cautioning families with progressive dementia or complex medical needs to verify staffing stability, incident reporting practices, and emergency notification protocols. Specific recommended due diligence steps include: asking for recent staff turnover statistics (especially in Memory Care and management), reviewing incident and fall reporting procedures, confirming staffing ratios and on-call nursing coverage, checking who covers the Activity Director role and how programming is maintained, sampling menus and meal timing, and clarifying billing/contract timelines and refund policies.

Bottom line: Westview at Ellisville has many strengths—new, clean facilities; warm, attentive front-line staff; strong therapy services; and active social programming. These positives lead many residents and families to report very high satisfaction. However, the volume and seriousness of complaints—centered chiefly in Memory Care, management responsiveness, and inconsistent food/kitchen service—are significant enough that prospective residents with dementia or higher medical needs should exercise caution. Families considering Westview should meet specific staff members, evaluate current Memory Care leadership stability, and get clear, written assurances about incident notification and staffing levels before committing. When staffed well and managed attentively, reviewers report a genuinely caring, home-like community; when staffing or leadership falters, the same reviewers report avoidable harm and unresolved concerns.

About Westview at Ellisville Assisted Living

Westview at Ellisville Assisted Living sits at 27 Reinke Road in Ellisville, Missouri, which is just west of downtown St. Louis, and has a nice wooded setting not far from shops, public parks, and essential services like hospitals and grocery stores, so residents can feel like they're close to what they need even as they enjoy the quiet surroundings. The community opened in July 2012 and has both assisted living and memory care, with 59 assisted living apartments and 24 memory care apartments, and those apartments come in different sizes including studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts, all with housekeeping, linen service, maintenance, and all utilities except for the phone and personal WiFi included, so residents don't have to worry about chores. Folks can bring pets since the place is pet-friendly, which can be a comfort for many who want to keep their animal companions by their side, and there's both common areas indoors for socializing and private spaces for those times when residents need quiet. People with mobility needs will find wheelchair accessible showers and 24-hour staff around, with nurses on site to help with medical support and a 24-hour emergency response system to help everyone feel secure, and for those who want to age in place, there are services and apartment options for changing needs over time.

When it comes to food, three chef-prepared meals are served daily in restaurant-style dining rooms, and they do their best to cater to different dietary needs, with rotating menus and flexible options if someone needs something specific. The activity calendar stays full with daily exercise classes, regular arts and crafts, weekly entertainment, religious or devotional gatherings, and resident-led events too, and there's a big focus on letting everyone use their own talents and ideas to shape community life, so people feel involved. There are walking paths, a fitness and physical therapy center, a theater for movies and events, a sky lounge for relaxing with others, a bistro and dining area, fireplaces in cozy lounges, and a large community room for bigger projects or social times.

The memory care at Westview uses the St. Louis University Mental Status Exam (SLUMS) to help understand cognitive support needs, and the care plans come from licensed nursing staff who try to help each person do as much as possible on their own, using what they call a need-based assistance model, which means folks pay for the care they really need without extra charges. That approach also means people who need help with daily activities get it from staff who are available day and night, and the community supports aging in place with services that adjust as someone's needs change. There's on-site therapy for physical, occupational, and speech needs, beauty and barber shop services to help folks look their best, respite care for temporary stays, scheduled free transportation, and weekly housekeeping. Westview at Ellisville Assisted Living also supports causes like local animal shelters and the Alzheimer's Association through community efforts, and tries to keep a warm, engaged environment where everyone's background and beliefs get recognized, so there's room for people to truly find a good fit. The community's committed to health and safety, with rules like no smoking indoors and extra COVID-19 prevention steps, and there's open feedback from residents to help shape activities and services as time goes on. Residents with memory needs are supported in both structured routines and opportunities to follow personal interests, so everyone has the best chance at a rewarding, safe, and comfortable life.
