    Beautiful facility, dangerous medical neglect

I love the spotless, new Fulton facility - beautiful inside, friendly residents, great meals and a full activity schedule. But I also witnessed serious staffing and medical failures: unhelpful and sometimes abusive staff, laughter at a potential stroke, refusal to assist and even police involvement to get care. Beautiful place, but I can't recommend it until staffing and medical response improve.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across these reviews is mixed, with a substantial number of positive comments about the facility’s environment and programming, but several very serious negative reports about staff behavior and medical responsiveness that create notable safety and reliability concerns.

On the positive side, reviewers frequently praise the physical facility and atmosphere. The building and interiors are described as clean, new, and beautiful; residents are said to be well cared for and happy in some accounts. The community is small and intimate, which several reviewers view favorably. The facility offers a robust activities program — examples cited include bingo, exercise classes, church services, movies, and an engaged activity director who includes residents in social programming. Meals receive favorable mentions, and there is at least one explicit mention of hospice-level care being available. Visitors generally report few visitation restrictions and a convenient location near doctors, which is helpful for families who want regular contact and access to clinicians. Management receives some positive recognition as well, with an individual named Stephanie singled out as an “awesome boss” and staff described in several reviews as sweet, wonderful, and friendly.

However, the negative reports include several potentially serious issues that contradict the otherwise positive impressions. Multiple reviewers allege that staff were unhelpful or lacked appropriate medical knowledge during emergencies, including a report that staff laughed at a potential stroke and did not assist in obtaining medical attention. One review claims staff refused to act because they purportedly had no power of attorney and that callers were rushed off the line — culminating in police involvement to obtain help and suggestions of possible legal trouble for the facility. These sorts of allegations raise red flags about emergency protocols, staff training, escalation procedures, and communication with families.

Another recurring negative theme is staff behavior and professionalism. While many reviews call staff caring and friendly, at least one review describes abusive, hostile conduct — screaming at a custodian and shouting at a resident to eat — and explicitly recommends against the facility. There are also comments pointing to staffing shortages or under-staffing, which can exacerbate inconsistent care and increase stress on remaining employees, potentially contributing to lapses in professionalism or attention.

Taken together, the pattern suggests a facility that offers a generally pleasant environment, engaging activities, and attentive care in many cases, but with concerning variability in staff performance and responses to medical emergencies. The presence of both warm, caring accounts and serious allegations of neglect or abuse implies inconsistency: some residents and families experience good care and service, while others report alarming incidents. For prospective residents or family members, these reviews indicate strengths to value (clean facility, active programming, visitation access, hospice services, friendly staff in many instances) but also important risks to investigate further (emergency response procedures, staff training and turnover, complaint resolution processes, and any documented incidents involving law enforcement or regulatory action).

In summary, Valley Park Retirement Center appears to offer a welcoming physical environment and a lively program of activities with many staff members who are compassionate and professional. At the same time, reviewers describe severe and specific failures around medical attention and staff behavior that warrant careful follow-up. If considering this community, ask facility leadership for documentation on staffing levels, emergency response policies, staff training (especially in medical emergency recognition and dementia/behavior management), incident reports and outcomes, and references from current families to assess how widespread and recent the concerning incidents are. These steps will help weigh the facility’s clear advantages against the troubling reports that appear in the reviews.
