    Great care, new management problems

My mom lived there for eight years and I found the staff-especially Cara the administrator-to be first-class, genuinely caring and attentive; the facility was clean, quiet and home-like with large rooms, en suites and multiple common areas. There's an on-site nurse, medication dispensing, Medicare/Medicaid accepted, affordable mid-range pricing, flavorful food and lots of activities (Wii bowling, crafts, Bible study, music, family events) that made it great value. Recently new ownership raised rent and mistreated staff, causing loss of caring employees (even an unpaid cab driver incident), so while I highly recommend it based on our long positive experience, check current staffing and management before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is largely positive with strong praise for staff, the facility environment, programs, and value — tempered by several recent management concerns. Reviewers repeatedly highlight friendly, attentive and caring staff who go out of their way to make residents feel at home. The facility is described as clean and quiet, with a home-like feeling and consistent staff presence. Multiple reviewers cite a caring director/administrator (one named Cara) and owner involvement as factors that contributed to good outcomes and a positive care turnaround in the past. Long-term residency (one resident lived there for eight years) and multiple "highly recommended" statements underscore an overall history of satisfactory care and resident satisfaction.

Care quality and staffing are focal positives. Multiple comments note on-site nursing, medication dispensing, and daily supportive services such as light cleaning, trash removal, and linen service. Staff are characterized as "first class," attentive and willing to go beyond basic duties to help residents and families. Several reviewers emphasize the consistent and caring nature of staff, which supports a sense of safety and continuity for residents.

Facilities and amenities receive frequent praise. Avonlea Gladstone is described as an affordable mid-range option that accepts Medicare and Medicaid, delivering good price-to-value. Physical features called out include large rooms with en suite bathrooms, multiple common rooms, cozy sitting areas, a dining room with flavorful food, and a snack/game room with a kitchenette and pool table. The atmosphere supports socialization — reviewers mention a piano and organ for live music and a variety of daily activities such as Wii bowling, crafts, and Bible study. Family-inclusive entertainment and diverse programming are highlighted as strengths that engage both residents and visiting family members.

Dining and activities are consistently noted as strong points. The food receives positive comments for flavor, and the activity slate is described as broad and inclusive, with both recreational and spiritual programs. The availability of common spaces and organized activities contributes to a lively yet comfortable community environment, supporting social needs and quality of life for residents.

Management and ownership are mixed themes and the primary source of concern across the reviews. While some comments praise owner involvement and a caring director, other reviews point to a recent ownership change that has had negative effects. Specific complaints about the new ownership include rent increases, reports of poor treatment of employees, loss of caring long-term staff, and at least one allegation of a financial lapse (an inability to pay a cab driver). These reports raise concerns about staff turnover, morale, and the potential for declining continuity and quality of care if the situation persists. Notably, several reviewers mention improvements over a recent 10-month period and a positive turnaround prior to the ownership transition, which suggests the facility has the capacity to deliver high-quality care when management and staffing are stable.

In summary, Avonlea Gladstone is portrayed by reviewers as a clean, comfortable, and affordable assisted living option with strong staff engagement, good dining, varied activities, and useful on-site clinical supports. Its long-term positive track record and many specific amenities make it appealing to families seeking value and a homelike community. However, prospective residents and families should be mindful of reported management changes: recent ownership turnover, rent increases, and allegations about employee treatment and financial management have introduced uncertainty around staffing stability and future care continuity. Those considering Avonlea Gladstone should ask current management about recent turnover, staffing plans, and financial practices, and, if possible, speak with current residents and families to confirm that the caring culture and service levels described in the positive reviews remain in place.

    About Avonlea Gladstone

Avonlea Gladstone sits at 2801 NE 60th St in Gladstone, Missouri, and is a senior residential care facility that offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. The community holds 100 licensed beds and focuses on helping seniors keep their independence through social engagement and personal support, so people have a place to call home where they're looked after but also encouraged to stay active. They offer studio and one-bedroom apartments with private baths, as well as some two-bedroom layouts, and each apartment has emergency systems, cable, private phone lines, and room for people's own furniture, with apartment-sized refrigerators and microwaves. There's the "all seasons sunroom," a beautifully landscaped courtyard, an ice cream parlor, and a billiards room, plus plenty of communal spaces with a piano, fireplace, and aquarium that feel like home instead of an institution, and gardens and outdoor patios invite residents to enjoy fresh air.

The facility provides three home-cooked meals every day, with snacks, and all meals are handled by a culinary chef. Basic needs like linen service, weekly laundry, and housekeeping get taken care of for everyone. They keep residents busy with arts and crafts, game nights, Nintendo Wii bowling, resident musical groups, story time, puzzles, and scheduled events, and exercise is part of daily life with a gym and fitness area. Staff help with needs such as medication management, bathing, dressing, incontinence care, and moving around, and there's discreet support for daily activities if needed. Home health, skilled nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and medication monitoring are also available on-site, and pharmacy services are always at hand. Therapists and healthcare professionals visit on a schedule, and all care is adjusted to what each person needs, whether for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or just getting help with daily activities.

Residents have access to homey amenities like chapel services, the snack shop, walking paths in the gardens, an arts and crafts area, and a game room. There's WiFi throughout, cable in every room, and utilities are included. Avonlea Gladstone allows small pets, so people don't have to leave their companions behind, and outdoor parking spaces are provided for residents and guests. Staff help arrange transportation for doctor's appointments and shopping trips, so errands are easier. There's a beauty shop for personal care, tied with concierge and case management services that help with whatever else a resident might need.

The all-inclusive pricing means residents and families know what to expect without many separate fees adding up. The staff are licensed and certified, always on duty day and night, keeping everyone safe and cared for. Avonlea Gladstone provides both independent and assisted living, along with memory and dementia care, and has services for moving between different levels of support as needs change, with long-term care available in a way that aims to help people keep their dignity and personal choices while giving peace of mind to families. The community is part of United Senior Properties, and although it doesn't accept Medicare unless it's certified by CMS, it takes checks. Accommodations are designed to be comfortable and practical, allowing residents to enjoy privacy, freedom, and as active a retirement as they're able to have.
