    Caring staff but management unprofessional

I appreciated the caring nurses and aides, friendly staff, and recent building upgrades in this pleasant small-town facility. However, management was often unprofessional and unresponsive, communication and phone access were poor, and I witnessed understaffing, hygiene/neglect issues (residents left soiled, transfers refused) and pushy prepay sales tactics. Despite some good caregivers, my overall experience was negative and I cannot recommend it.

    Summary review

The reviews for Hickory Manor are markedly polarized, showing a mix of strongly positive and seriously negative experiences. On the positive side, many reviewers repeatedly praise the human side of care: staff are described as kind, caring, friendly, and in several cases as ‘good’ nurses and aides who took very good care of residents over extended periods. Several comments single out a professional administrator and staff, and some reviewers explicitly call it a good place with good care. There are also positive notes about the physical environment — mentions of building upgrades, an upcoming transport van for residents, and attractive outdoor features like shade trees and an ‘awesome’ park. A subset of reviewers also remarked that the facility is clean and has a small-town feel that some families appreciate.

However, the negative reports are significant and severe in some instances. Multiple reviewers describe incidents of neglect and poor hygiene, including being left in urine for hours and development of rashes — claims that point to lapses in basic personal care and monitoring. One review alleges that a hospital transfer was refused, which, if accurate, is a serious clinical and safety concern. Many complaints center on staff unresponsiveness and poor communication: difficulty reaching staff by phone, a generally unresponsive attitude, and reports of rudeness. Understaffing is mentioned explicitly and implicitly tied to declining care quality; some reviews state that poor patient care and mistreatment of employees have occurred, suggesting systemic staffing and personnel problems rather than isolated incidents.

There is also a pattern of distrust and concern about management or sales practices. Several reviewers reported pushy or aggressive prepayment sales tactics and described the facility as not trustworthy or not recommended. At the same time, at least one reviewer observed a professional administrator, indicating inconsistency between reviewers’ experiences with management. Cleanliness is a mixed theme: while some note that the facility is clean, others use words like “disgusting” and “unprofessional,” showing wide variation in perceptions of environmental and hygienic standards.

Taken together, these reviews paint a picture of a facility with real strengths and real risks. Strengths include compassionate caregivers, a professional presence in leadership as perceived by some, and investments in the building and resident transportation. Risks and red flags include serious allegations of neglect and hygiene lapses, inconsistent staff responsiveness, understaffing, and concerns about sales or payment practices. The juxtaposition of long-term positive family experiences against reports of neglect suggests inconsistency over time or variability between units or shifts.

For prospective residents or families, these mixed reviews suggest several practical next steps: visit the facility multiple times at different times of day and ask to see staffing schedules; speak with current families about recent experiences; request recent inspection or deficiency reports from regulators; inquire about policies for hospital transfers and emergency protocols; ask about staff turnover and employee treatment; and get clarity on financial/sales practices, including any prepayment requirements. In summary, Hickory Manor appears to offer compassionate care and some facility improvements for many residents, but the serious negative allegations warrant careful, specific due diligence before making placement decisions.
