    Filthy understaffed neglected nursing home

I placed a loved one here and while a handful of staff (Gine' and some very caring CNAs) and an owner trying to modernize show genuine compassion, my overall experience was negative. The building is old, filthy and crowded; it's chronically understaffed-locked memory wards with no CNA or call button at times, long call-light waits, wrong meds, soiled/lost laundry and residents forced to change beds themselves. I saw safety and care failures (theft of belongings, delayed notifications, ignored basic needs like swollen feet, COVID visiting needs unmet) and management more likely to watch cameras than fix problems. Some residents are happy, but I would not recommend this place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans toward concern and caution. Multiple reviewers report serious and recurring problems with staffing levels, care consistency, cleanliness, and resident safety. At the same time, there are several prominent positive mentions—individual staff members and newer management receive praise, and some families describe loved ones as happy and well-cared-for. The combined picture is of a facility with valuable individual caregivers and some recent improvements, yet with systemic issues that undermine reliability and resident safety.

Care quality and staffing are the most frequently cited problems. Numerous reviews describe chronic understaffing on both day and night shifts, long call light response times, and shifts where no CNA or nurse was available. Examples include residents left standing during smoke breaks, untreated medical issues (a swollen foot not wrapped or elevated), alleged medication errors, and reports that staff did not respond or could not be found at night. Several reviewers specifically say the level of attention and care is inconsistent: some staff are described as compassionate and "amazing," while others are accused of treating residents poorly or as if they were "stupid." The memory care unit receives mixed but sometimes positive notes—some families praise compassionate care there, while others raise safety concerns about locked, all-male units and insufficient supervision.

Safety, theft, and personal property concerns are a recurring theme. Multiple reviews allege theft or loss of belongings, including laundry gone missing and residents required to fetch sheets or change their own beds. Laundry mismanagement and limited closet space exacerbate these problems. There are also reports of resident fights, unsafe locked units, and management monitoring remotely via cameras—facts that together raise questions about on-the-ground supervision and resident protection. Several reviewers specifically said they would not recommend the facility because of these safety and theft concerns.

Facility condition, hygiene, and dining draw strong negative comments from some reviewers. Several characterize the building as old, institutional, crowded, and in need of modernization—though others note ongoing modernization efforts. Cleanliness issues are mentioned repeatedly: extremely filthy conditions, soiled bedding, and malfunctioning equipment such as the dishwasher. Food quality was criticized by at least one reviewer who described meals as "dog-food". Infection control worries are implied by reports of coughing residents and COVID-19 visiting restrictions; communication about health events also appears inconsistent, with at least one complaint about delayed notification after a resident death.

Management, culture, and staff dynamics are mixed. Some reviewers praise the owner as supportive and commend new management for taking time to learn residents and bringing positive energy. Individual employees receive specific recognition (Gine' and other "amazing" staff). However, other comments point to poor workplace culture—jealousy among staff, unfair written discipline or firing, and a problematic activities director role—which can affect continuity of care. There are also practical communication gaps: a social worker was unavailable for four days in one report, and families express frustration with difficulty finding nurses or getting timely updates.

In summary, these reviews depict a facility with bright spots—dedicated individual caregivers, an affordable pricing model, an owner who is seen as supportive, and some positive changes under new management—but also persistent, significant concerns. The most serious and recurring issues are understaffing, inconsistent clinical care, hygiene and maintenance problems, loss/theft of personal property, and safety lapses. Prospective residents and families should weigh those risks against the positive reports; if considering this facility, it would be prudent to ask specific, recent questions about staffing ratios, nurse/CNA coverage overnight, infection-control and housekeeping protocols, laundry and property safeguards, incident reporting and response times, and any concrete improvements implemented by new management.

Families seem to notice that the staff has nurses, social workers, physical therapists, speech and occupational therapists, plus outside specialists such as a physician wound specialist, podiatrists, and optometrists, which allows for services like complex wound care, diabetic teaching, colostomy care, IV therapies, and cardiac and renal management, including things like cardiac vest and dialysis transport. The memory care program helps people with dementia, and the environment feels friendly, with a sense of routine and security; they aim to keep people engaged with daily activities and social events, and families can join resident councils or family councils to help improve the quality of care, which is something that seems to matter to the staff. Dining comes in a restaurant-style setting where residents can choose from all-day menus, and meals are made by a professional chef with special diets for diabetes or allergies; services also include meal preparation, housekeeping, furnished rooms, emergency alert systems, move-in help, and other comforts. Payment options cover Medicare, Medicaid, private pay, and private insurance, and there's financial assistance for those who qualify. Educational opportunities are available too, such as CNA courses, insulin training, and online resources for residents, families, and staff. The administration, with Katina Hawkins as the administrator, is run by Estates of Spanish Lake, LLC, and the facility has a clear mission and values statement, offers Board-led oversight, community engagement, and online event calendars to keep residents and families informed. The Estates of Spanish Lake tries to create a welcoming, supportive place where the focus stays on comfort, health, and the daily routines that help people feel secure and cared for, right there in the St. Louis area, 24 hours a day.
