    Caring staff; bedbugs and deaths

I liked the friendly, caring staff, bright communal areas with lots of natural light, tasty nutritious meals with options, regular events and exercise (walks, yoga, gym), patio/outdoor seating and lovely greenery - my gov payee even gave it a 5/5. However I encountered serious problems: bedbug infestations, removal of personal belongings, shared rooms/meals, poor cleanliness/maintenance, and residents even call it the "nut house." Worst of all, a resident wandered off and froze to death - because of safety concerns I cannot recommend this place.

    Summary review

The reviews for Sylvan House present a mixture of strong positive highlights and serious negative concerns, producing a sharply divided overall picture. On the positive side, multiple comments emphasize attentive, friendly staff and caring interactions with residents. Communal spaces are frequently described as clean, bright, and well-lit with natural light, and the exterior and patio spaces with greenery are noted as pleasant and welcoming. Dining receives positive mention for being tasty and nutritious with dietary options available. The facility appears to offer a robust activity program, including regular events and varied activities, plus exercise offerings such as walks, yoga, and a gym. Practical resident amenities are also cited positively — ample living spaces with temperature control and assistance buttons, and kitchenettes that allow preparation of meals for guests.

Despite these strengths, the reviews also contain multiple serious and specific negatives that cannot be overlooked. The most acute issues reported include a bedbug infestation and an account that personal belongings were removed as part of remediation. Reviewers raise concerns about poor cleanliness and maintenance in some areas, which contrasts with other comments about clean communal spaces and suggests inconsistent upkeep. Several reviews mention shared rooms and shared meals, indicating limited privacy for some residents. Crucially, one review alleges that a resident wandered off and froze to death, and broader comments reference safety and supervision concerns — these indicate potential lapses in monitoring and resident protection and are severe red flags that warrant immediate clarification from management.

Management and reputation appear mixed: a government payee recommendation and an overall 5/5 rating are cited in the summaries, suggesting some formal or individual endorsement of the facility. At the same time, a derogatory nickname (“Nut house”) appears in the feedback, indicating negative community perception among some reviewers or visitors. This contradiction between official or highly positive endorsements and deeply troubling anecdotal reports suggests inconsistency in service quality or uneven experiences across different residents and time periods.

In summary, Sylvan House shows many of the attributes families and residents typically seek — approachable staff, attractive indoor and outdoor spaces, varied activities, and solid dining and exercise options. However, the presence of very serious allegations (infestation, removal of belongings, a fatal wandering incident) and recurring mentions of cleanliness, maintenance, privacy, and safety concerns create significant cause for caution. Prospective residents and families should verify current status on the specific negative items (especially pest remediation, policies on personal property, supervision and elopement prevention, and maintenance routines) and seek recent, corroborated information from management, licensure records, and independent inspections before making a placement decision.

    About Sylvan House

Sylvan House sits at 30 Sherman Ave in Saint Louis, MO, and is a small, family-owned senior living community in a regular house where fewer than ten residents live together, so it feels like a home. The facility works as an independent living setting but also covers a range of care types like assisted living, memory care for those with Alzheimer's and dementia, hospice care, nursing home care, and respite care for those who only need support for a short time, and it can go by several names depending on the state, like Adult Foster Home, Personal Care Home, or Assisted Living Home, since those terms can all mean a place smaller and more personal than a big facility. Staff help residents with daily things such as getting dressed, bathing, and managing medicine, and they're there to help around the clock, so someone's always ready for emergencies or when residents need help with moving around, even going from bed to wheelchair. Those with diabetes can get insulin monitoring help, and people who need incontinence or non-ambulatory care have support as well. Memory care includes 24-hour supervision and activities that build memory and allow safe social time. Residents eat group meals every day, and there's always something to do with on-site and off-site activities meant to help people stay active in their bodies, minds, and social lives, plus there are devotional activities for those who want spiritual support. Housekeeping and meal services mean residents don't need to worry about cooking or cleaning much, and the staff are ready to personalize care to fit each resident, whether they're staying for a while or only a week or two. Sylvan House only has common indoor spaces for gathering, and there aren't any listed outdoor features, but there should be some sort of parking or garage for residents or visitors even though the details aren't clear. The house runs as a rental apartment but is off the market right now, and there aren't details about what's included in the rent or about pets. The region has local protections for LGBTQ residents regarding housing and work, so people should know the law supports them. People living at Sylvan House can get support at whatever level they need, and even though there aren't fancy unique names for parts of the building, the care types do cover those different needs so each person gets what fits.
