    Friendly community pricey but worthwhile

I live here and appreciate the friendly, caring staff, very clean common areas, lively activities, good dining, and a convenient location near buses, groceries and parks. My apartment is bright, spacious, pet-friendly and secure in a charming older building, but rent is high (studios reported around $3,200) and I've seen occasional front-desk inconsistency, AC/maintenance hiccups, and limited wheelchair transport. Overall I'm glad we moved - the staff and community make it worth considering if you can afford it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive, with the strongest and most frequent praise focusing on staff, apartment size, cleanliness, and community atmosphere. Many reviewers describe the staff as friendly, caring, accommodating, and reliable — several note long-tenured employees and specific staff who went “above and beyond” during move-in or to meet resident needs. Maintenance responsiveness and helpful billing/administrative support are commonly cited, and multiple reviewers feel staff act like family and create a warm, home-like environment.

Facilities and apartments receive consistent positive feedback. The building’s historic charm and bright, spacious apartments are repeatedly mentioned: reviewers highlight very large studios, generous walk-in closets, walk-in showers, full kitchens, and a variety of one- and two-bedroom floorplans. Cleanliness is frequently praised, sometimes described as above expectations, and ongoing refurbishments are underway to update the older building. Outdoor amenities such as a garden, courtyard and on-site dog park are valued, as is the pet-friendly policy (including reports of no extra pet fees). Secure access, covered garage parking, elevator access, and an on-site dining room and cafeteria are additional practical benefits residents appreciate.

Dining, activities, and social life are important themes. The dining room and meals are liked by many residents — some reviews call the food “very good” and praise the cafeteria vibe — though a subset of reviewers report meal quality has declined or is inconsistent over time. Social programming and communal spaces are strengths: community rooms with puzzles/books, holiday parties, church services, and resident gatherings foster social engagement, and some reviewers credit the community with improving formerly isolated residents’ social lives. The on-site gym and availability of personal training by an occupational therapist are notable features for residents seeking to remain active and age in place.

Accessibility, transportation, and safety show mixed feedback. The location is convenient to shops, parks, and public transportation, which many residents appreciate. However, accessibility for those with mobility limitations is uneven: a bus with a wheelchair lift is reportedly “in process,” and multiple reviewers raise concerns about limited wheelchair-accessible transportation, difficulty crossing busy streets nearby, and practical challenges for people using both a cane and a walker. Some reviewers explicitly praise the community’s support for residents with disabilities, while others caution that transportation and certain accessibility details should be confirmed prior to moving.

Cost, management consistency, and a few negative experiences are notable caveats. While some reviewers describe the pricing as very reasonable and a good value for the size and services, others report high rent (one reviewer cited $3,200/month) and say the cost can be steep for studios. Several reviews point to inconsistent front desk experiences — from very welcoming to rude or unprofessional — and a small number recount communication or staff performance problems. There are also isolated reports of arrival/sign-in difficulties and an admonition to be cautious about certain “free moves” tactics and move-in logistics. A few practical complaints include occasional air-conditioning failures, the absence of a pool, and the sense that an older building requires ongoing attention.

Bottom line: Tower Grove Manor is generally described as a clean, well-staffed, community-oriented senior living option with unusually large apartments in a beautiful historic building. It is a strong fit for people who value warm, helpful staff, roomy units with in-unit kitchens and bathrooms, pet-friendliness, on-site fitness and dining, and an active social environment with opportunities to age in place. Prospective residents should confirm current pricing, unit square footage, and specific accessibility/transportation arrangements, and may want to ask about front desk procedures and recent dining quality to address the few recurring concerns noted by reviewers.

    About Tower Grove Manor

Tower Grove Manor sits in the heart of historic South Saint Louis, right next to grocery stores and across the street from Tower Grove Park, and you get nice views of these leafy grounds from several of the apartments, which come in studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom sizes, each with full kitchens, walk-in closets, and bathrooms, plus some even have balconies, patio, or garden features, so you don't feel cramped. The place is a 55+ independent living community, though some information about specific services and care types isn't too easy to find, and you'll find a mix of active seniors living here because they want maintenance-free life with meals, all utilities included (except cable and phone), WiFi in common areas, housekeeping, laundry rooms on the lower level, and coin machines-though at times the elevator acts up more than folks would like, which means you might use the stairs more often than not.

The Manor has attached garage parking, outdoor parking options, and it welcomes dogs and cats, with a pet park onsite for walks or socializing, whether your dog is small or large. For those who need spiritual nourishment, you can attend religious or devotional services right in the building, and there's a community room, party lounge, library with plenty of books, a fitness room, and activity rooms where residents join in games like Bridge and Canasta, Tai chi, walking groups, and seminars about health, or even enjoy movie nights, cocktail hours, birthday celebrations, potlucks, and trips out into the St. Louis community, so there's always something on the calendar if you like staying busy. Tower Grove Manor sits close to plenty of shops, entertainment, restaurants, and even healthcare centers, so you're not far from what you need, and there's always good food in the dining room-starters like Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad or Seafood Bisque, entrees like Barbecued Shrimp or Crab Cakes, and desserts such as Tapioca Pudding or Almond Cake, with sides like Sautéed Spinach and Roasted Broccoli, making mealtimes nice and relaxed.

The apartments come with ceiling fans, carpeting or vinyl floors, and you get utilities like electricity, garbage, heat, hot water, and water in the rent, making expenses easier to manage, though cable and phone are not included. You'll find shared laundry on site, but each unit has a fridge for convenience, and 24-hour emergency assistance plus security gives some peace of mind. There's a landscaped courtyard for sitting in peace or meeting friends, movie rooms for group entertainment, daily activities planned for those who wish to join, and you can rent out guest suites for overnight visitors. Residents arrange for third-party care if needed, and move-in coordination helps new residents settle in quicker. Smoking is allowed in private residences, but most common areas are shared, light-filled, and comfortable for gatherings or quiet time alike, and you can look out on the park or garden any time you like from many parts of the building. People living at Tower Grove Manor take part in community life, sharing good meals, activities, and plenty of choices for enjoying their days, whether it's a card game, a walk in the park, reading in the library, or just enjoying dessert with friends.
