    Beautiful facility, caring staff, pricey

I toured this well-known, beautiful facility and was impressed - the staff are fabulous, kind and dignified, the place is extremely clean with a big pool, nice cafeteria and cottages, plenty of activities, smooth registration, and good physician coordination. Food is good but dining options are limited (one meal included); bedrooms are small and two-bed layouts feel tight, and they cannot provide higher-level nursing care if that becomes necessary. It's pricey but feels like good value; note group transportation is included, private doctor trips cost extra, an emergency pendant is $100 up front, and 30 days' notice is required to move out.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive on cleanliness, staffing, and social/amenity offerings, with recurring concerns about room size, dining limitations, cost structure, and the facility’s ability to meet higher-level medical needs.

Care quality and staff: Multiple reviewers emphasize exceptionally positive interactions with staff. Descriptors such as "fabulous," "friendly," "caring," and "dignified" appear repeatedly. Reviewers also note consistent care delivery, good coordination with physicians, and adherence to schedules. The registration experience and leadership receive praise—reviewers mention a smooth admissions process and a director who is eager and helpful—supporting an image of well-managed resident intake and day-to-day operations.

Facilities and cleanliness: The facility is repeatedly described as "very" or "extremely" clean. Physical amenities cited include a large pool, a cafeteria, cottages, and a comfortable three-story layout with good public spaces for visitors and TV-watching. Reviewers report attractive, well-kept common areas and specific apartment configurations—some studios described as "bigger" and appealing. The facility seems to present well to visitors and prospective residents.

Accommodations and space concerns: The major negative recurring theme is apartment size. Bedrooms are commonly called small, and two-bedroom layouts are described as tight—many reviewers suggested the two-bedroom would work better as one bedroom plus another use rather than two full bedrooms. While some units (studios) are noted as larger and more comfortable, limited living space in certain floorplans is a consistent practical concern for people comparing options.

Dining and activities: Activities are a clear strength—reviewers mention plenty of planned activities and reliable schedules. Dining impressions are mixed: some reviewers praise the food, but others point to limited dining options, with at least one comment noting only one meal per day, implying restricted service levels for meals. This inconsistency suggests that while social programming is robust, meal service may vary by unit type, service package, or resident expectation.

Costs, fees, and policies: Cost is a commonly raised issue. Several reviewers describe the community as expensive or having significant upfront costs, though a few explicitly state they view it as "good value" for the money. There are also multiple extra charges called out: group transportation is included, but private trips (for example, private doctor transportation) incur additional fees; an emergency call cord requires a $100 initial installation fee; and laundry arrangements are mixed—sheets are included in cost and personal laundry is an option, but shared laundry machines on floors may be less convenient than in-unit washers. Contractual policy (30 days’ notice to move out) is also noted and may be relevant for prospective residents evaluating flexibility.

Care level limitations: While day-to-day care and coordination earn praise, one important critical pattern is that at least one reviewer reported the facility was "unable to provide the level of care needed." This suggests that the community may not offer certain higher-acuity medical or nursing services in-house; prospective residents with complex medical needs should verify care-level capabilities and available transitions to higher-level care before committing.

Overall impression and recommendations: Reviewers collectively paint Friendship Village Sunset Hills as a well-run, very clean community with exceptional staff, lively activities, and attractive amenities. Prospective residents often value the social programming, pool and common spaces, and the supportive staff. The main drawbacks to weigh are smaller apartment sizes (particularly two-bedroom units), variable dining offerings, additional fees for certain services (private transport, emergency cord), and potential limitations in high-acuity medical care. For seniors seeking a socially active, well-maintained independent/senior apartment-style community and who do not require high-level medical services, the community appears highly appealing. For those who need more dining flexibility, larger living spaces, or advanced medical/nursing care, further questions and verification with management are strongly recommended.

    About Friendship Village Sunset Hills

Friendship Village Sunset Hills is a continuing care retirement community that provides several living options for older adults, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and short-term respite care for caregivers who need a break. The campus is quiet and green, with walking paths and indoor and outdoor common areas where residents can visit, relax, and enjoy activities like Bible study, movies in the private theater, game nights, or trips to local spots and even some international travel. The care here matches the needs of each resident, with services like medication management, help with bathing and dressing, diabetes and incontinence care, and 24/7 nursing oversight-including a full-time RN and licensed nurses day and night. There's a gold credentialed dementia care program with Montessori-inspired practices for those who need memory care, and the facility can manage high-acuity conditions and provide hospice services as well.

Friendship Village Sunset Hills offers three levels of prepared meals in a dining room along with room service and special diet options, whether kosher or vegan, and snacks are always available. There's a professional chef on staff and family can join for special meals in the private dining room. Residents get weekly housekeeping, laundry, and flat linen service, and can choose from several floor plans such as studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartments-including styles named The Astaire, The Bogart, The Cooper, and The Douglas-and each comes with private bathrooms. All utilities like water, sewer, gas, electricity, Wi-Fi or high-speed internet, cable TV with over 80 channels, and telephone service are included. Staff take care of move-in coordination, daily help, personal laundry for an extra charge, and offer transportation to medical appointments, errands, or the larger St. Louis area.

Safety comes first, with emergency alert systems, medical dispensers, and home security, as well as ID theft protection and non-smoking policies indoors. The staff speak English and include nurses, therapists (physical, occupational, speech), dentists, and podiatrists, with some team members working there for many years, helping create a family-like environment. Residents can bring pets and enjoy a beauty salon, barber shop, wellness room, fitness center, and chapel for weekly and Sunday services. The community is wheelchair accessible, including showers, and there's resident parking. Activities range from social and recreational to spiritual, and residents can access a library, community kitchen, bus outings, and faith-based programs. The primary goal here is to help people stay as independent as possible for as long as possible, offering support and comfort along the way.
