    Improvements noted, but care unsafe

I had a mixed, mostly negative experience. The building felt more homelike under new owners and some staff (Terry and several nurses/housekeeping) were genuinely kind, activities/transportation were improvements, and the common areas were nice - but basic care was often unsafe. I saw lack of turning, poor hydration and bedsores, lost dentures/phone/clothes, long waits from short staffing, cold food, roaches and a urine smell, and unprofessional leadership and behavior on shift. Staff tried hard and were friendly at times, but overall I would not recommend this facility.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews for Ackert Park are strongly polarized. Several reviewers describe a facility that has serious, persistent problems — particularly with cleanliness, pest control, and basic nursing care — while other reviewers highlight recent improvements, compassionate caregivers, and positive aspects of the facility under new ownership. These contrasting accounts produce an oscillating reputation: some families strongly recommend avoiding the facility, and others call out specific staff and administrative failures, while a roughly equal number praise individual caregivers, new management efforts, and certain amenities.

Care quality: A major theme is inconsistent care. Multiple reviews describe alarming lapses in basic nursing care — failure to turn bedridden residents, insufficient hydration, resulting bed sores and foot wounds, and reports of dehydration. There are also allegations of missing dentures and theft of personal items (clothes and phones). At the same time, many reviewers praise nurses and caregiving staff as kind, compassionate, and attentive. This suggests care quality varies significantly by shift, unit, or time period. The most severe complaints indicate systemic neglect for some residents, while others clearly experienced attentive, personalized care.

Staff behavior and staffing levels: Staffing and staff behavior are recurring issues. Several reviews cite short staffing, long waits for assistance, limited basic supplies, poor staff turnaround, gossip, and morale problems. Specific allegations include an unhelpful social worker and an administrator who supports problematic staff conduct. One review even alleges unprofessional behavior by the Director of Nursing (D.O.N.), including drinking and smoking on the job. Conversely, numerous reviews single out individual staff members (admissions director, nurses, housekeeping, specific caregivers like "Terry") as compassionate and hardworking. Overall, the pattern is of staff who try to do their best in the face of staffing shortages, with notable exceptions where unprofessional or negligent behavior was alleged.

Facilities and cleanliness: Cleanliness and facility condition are another area of sharp disagreement. A number of reviews report deplorable conditions — persistent roach infestations, smelling of urine, dirty spaces, and descriptions like "roach motel" and "depressing." These reports include multiple mentions of cockroaches and infestations that seriously undermine confidence in sanitation and infection control. At the same time, several reviews mention improvements under new ownership, such as an improved building structure and better housekeeping in some respects. This again indicates either recent remediation efforts or uneven conditions across the facility.

Dining and nutrition: Dining experiences are mixed but skew negative in several accounts. Complaints include cold food, cold coffee, and dining staff who lack manners; one reviewer described their mother crying after a meal. Some reviewers, however, report improved food quality after management changes. These mixed reports suggest dining service has been addressed by newer management but may remain inconsistent.

Management and administration: Management receives both praise and criticism. Positive comments emphasize new, caring management and a compassionate admissions director who welcomes residents and helps families. Negative comments point to administrators who back unhelpful staff, make empty promises, and fail to follow through on promised services. There are also reports of poor communication with families, including inadequate notification about wounds and restrictions in visitation during COVID that contributed to unhappy outcomes. The reviews suggest management turnover or recent ownership change, with some improvements noted but lingering organizational issues.

Activities and amenities: Several reviewers note positive developments in programming and amenities: new activity staff, a transportation van for outings, open areas for socializing, and a generally homelike environment for some residents. These are consistently cited as strengths by those who had positive experiences and indicate the facility has resources for social engagement when staffing allows.

Patterns and likely causes: The most plausible pattern from these reviews is high variability over time and across staff teams. Multiple reviews reference "new owners" and improvements (building, food, activities), while others describe older, severe problems (pests, neglect, theft). This suggests recent efforts to repair reputation and operations may be underway but that problems—particularly pest control, basic nursing protocols, staffing sufficiency, and administrative consistency—either persist in some areas or have not yet been fully resolved. Recurrent issues like roach infestations, bed sores, theft, and poor family communication are the most serious and frequently mentioned concerns.

Conclusion and implications for families: Families should be aware that experiences at Ackert Park appear to be highly mixed. Positive points include caring individual staff members, signs of recent management improvements, enhanced activities, and instances of good nursing care. Major red flags are repeated allegations of pest infestation, inadequate basic care (with reports of bed sores and dehydration), theft of personal items, and short staffing. If considering Ackert Park, prospective residents and families should: (1) visit multiple times at different hours to observe staffing and cleanliness, (2) ask about pest-control records and recent remediation efforts, (3) inquire about staffing ratios, turnover, and care protocols for turning/skin checks and hydration, and (4) request references from current families. The reviews show both real strengths worth noting and serious issues that require verification and monitoring before making a placement decision.
