    Home-like facility, serious staffing concerns

I placed my loved one in this small, home-like memory care because the house is beautiful, very clean, with a lovely yard, RN on staff, caring and skillful caregivers (Dimitria and Estella stand out), small resident count, planned activities, home-cooked meals, and dementia-friendly attention - good value and a very family-like feel. That said, I've also seen serious problems: understaffing (often one staff for five residents or staff on 24-36 hour shifts), poor diet, inconsistent toileting, lack of meaningful recreation, staff misusing residents as sitters/taking food, and in some cases emotional/physical mistreatment and threats about discharge. Management can be responsive, but the facility needs updating and much tighter oversight. I'm grateful for the compassionate moments but remain worried about safety and staffing.

    About Haven Care Assisted Living-Cottonwood

Haven Care Assisted Living-Cottonwood, also called Cottonwood House, sits in northeast Albuquerque, New Mexico, near the US 25 and US 40 interchange, and you'll see it's a regular house on a quiet street made for only five residents at a time. The staff focus on personal care, helping with things like bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and mobility, and they're always around for support, day and night, so nobody feels left alone, and everybody gets help as needed for things like insulin checks and medication. The place serves three home-cooked meals every day, and snacks are always available in the kitchen, and meal plans can get adjusted for folks who need something special for diabetes, hypertension, or a vegetarian or Kosher diet. Residents can relax in a cozy living room with comfortable couches or enjoy the private backyard for fresh air, and there's Wi-Fi for those who want it. They let residents bring small pets, and there's no smoking in indoor spaces.

The staff help manage medication, and visiting therapists for physical and occupational needs stop by, so regular doctor appointments can run smoother. When transportation's needed, say for an outing, shopping, or trips to the doctor, the facility provides a ride. Haven Care Assisted Living-Cottonwood also does memory care and specializes in seniors living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, and they keep the place secure for peace of mind. Caregivers and activities directors work together to keep days engaging, planning music therapy, stretch classes, light exercises, group games, and trips in town. They also partner with local animal, massage, and music therapists, and sometimes there'll be round-table talks, arts and crafts, spiritual activities, and even intergenerational visits that help folks connect and share stories. Families can rest a little easier knowing there's a structured plan for each resident, reviewed often to keep up with changing needs, whether it's for long-term, respite, hospice, or memory care.

The five-bedroom house and the small number of residents mean people get to know each other fast and the caregivers really get to learn everyone's habits, which helps them catch when something changes in a resident's health or mood. The home's calm, friendly environment encourages friendship and socialization, there's a focus on nutritious meals, and there are activities every day to keep minds sharp and bodies moving, including music, conversation, cards, learning circles, spiritual time, and creative art projects. Haven Care Assisted Living-Cottonwood doesn't accept Medicare because it isn't certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, so families need to look into payment separately, but it is licensed by state or local authorities, so you know it's held to a local standard of care. The staff often stay for long periods, and they value caregivers with dependable schedules and reliable transportation, offering chances for overtime and advancement, so continuity and dedication stay high for residents. People describe the place as homelike and warm, where attention to detail and kindness seem to matter as much as the care itself.
