    Homey but concerns about care

I felt at home - small, homey and generally clean facility with friendly, very attentive staff, good food, pets and a lovely yard. Care was excellent and they do outings, walks and activities, so my loved one stayed engaged. That said, the building is old and I noticed housekeeping/disorganization issues (occasional urine/feces smells, dirty clothes), staff turnover and even a security lapse that concerned me. Also be warned: their respite care was misrepresented - they're not set up for Alzheimer's respite - and billing seemed overpriced.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Millie's Assisted Living is mixed but leans positive: a majority of reviewers highlight compassionate, attentive staff, a comfortable home-like environment, enjoyable food, and a good range of social activities. Many family members explicitly state they felt at ease leaving loved ones in Millie’s care, praising staff communication and hands-on involvement. The small size and pet-friendly policy are repeatedly cited as strengths that create a personal, community-oriented atmosphere. Outdoor space, yard upkeep, and participation in outings (grocery shopping, field trips) contribute to residents’ quality of life.

Care quality is a central theme and is described very positively by multiple reviewers who used terms like "excellent care," "never felt left out of the loop," and "no worry about dad's care." These reviewers emphasize staff warmth, eagerness to engage, and willingness to accommodate active residents. Named staff members were singled out for praise, and several anecdotes (staff bringing tamales to share, taking residents shopping, inviting musicians) indicate a high level of personal commitment from some staff members.

However, there are significant and recurring concerns that create a mixed picture of reliability and consistency. Several reviews describe serious lapses: rude staff, disorganization, staff quitting, and even a reported unauthorized person entering the facility. Housekeeping problems are mentioned more than once—specifically laundry mishandling, rooms not being swept, and clothing returned dirty—contrasting with other reviewers who called bedding and resident appearance clean. A few reports mention strong odors (urine/feces), and at least one reviewer explicitly said patients were treated badly. These negative reports suggest variability in day-to-day execution and staffing stability.

Respite care and specialized needs are a particular point of contention. Some families received good short-term care, while others said respite was misrepresented, overpriced, or not equipped to handle Alzheimer’s-related needs. One reviewer noted that staff had to be brought in to stay with the resident, implying either understaffing or lack of appropriate training for certain cognitive-care situations. Prospective families should therefore verify the facility’s capacity for respite stays and dementia care during a tour.

Facility and environment-related feedback is similarly mixed. Many reviewers describe the building as homey and clean with a beautiful yard and pet-friendly policies. At the same time, the facility is noted to be older, and at least one reviewer reported security and cleanliness issues (unauthorized entry, smell problems). Activities programming is a clear strength for residents who enjoy group events—bingo, music, walks, and outings are frequently mentioned—though one reviewer noted that an active resident didn’t match the general activity level of peers, indicating that social fit should be assessed.

In summary, Millie's Assisted Living receives strong praise for its interpersonal strengths: devoted staff members who provide warm, individualized care, pleasant meals, a small, home-like environment, outdoor access, and meaningful activities. Nevertheless, the reviews reveal important inconsistencies—housekeeping lapses, staff turnover, occasional poor conduct, security concerns, and unclear suitability for Alzheimer’s respite care—that prospective families should probe. When considering Millie’s, it would be prudent to tour the facility, ask direct questions about staffing continuity, dementia/respite capabilities, laundry and housekeeping processes, security measures, and billing practices to determine whether the facility’s strengths align with the specific needs of the prospective resident.

    About Millie's Assisted Living

Millie's Assisted Living, which sits just a block from historic downtown Silver City, has been serving seniors for over 22 years as a small, family-owned and operated adult family home, licensed to care for up to 16 residents. The community offers assisted living services, hospice care, and rehabilitation, and it welcomes both long-term residents and short-term respite clients, including those on Medicaid and those who need daytime help. Residents can expect daily support with activities like dressing, bathing, grooming, and getting their medications on time, and there's always a helpful and joyful staff on hand around the clock. The environment feels warm and home-like, with everyone sitting down together for meals and gathering as a group to celebrate birthdays and holidays, plus the place lets people keep their pets, which is nice for those who've always had animals around. There's a focus on personal dignity and encouraging self-reliance, with care plans adjusted to each person and attentive housekeeping, laundry, and cleanliness that helps folks feel comfortable. There's a handicapped-accessible bathroom, which makes things much easier for those with mobility needs, and the rooms are described as spacious, so no one feels boxed in. Residents get three nutritious meals a day made with good ingredients, and if someone needs a special diet, the staff do their best to provide that within the facility's capabilities. Folks can relax outside on landscaped grounds, spend time with others during activity programs both inside and out in the community, and enjoy cable TV or read in the well-stocked library, so there's always something to do. Scheduled transportation is limited, but staff arrange wellness visits with an on-call registered nurse, and they keep a close eye on everyone's health and well-being, helping to coordinate with outside healthcare providers if it's needed. The community's always looking forward, with plans to add a nearby independent living facility and another assisted living building on the property to help people stay in familiar surroundings as their needs change. Above all, Millie's emphasizes a safe, healthy, and supportive place where seniors can keep their independence for as long as possible, with a staff that values kindness and respect, all managed by Ms. Carley Preusch, President, under a corporation with an A+ BBB rating, so families feel they've found a reliable place for their loved ones.
