    Spacious safe resort-like community living

I live in a spacious, very clean two-bedroom apartment and feel safe and cared for in this resort-like community. The staff are friendly and responsive, the restaurant-style food is excellent, and there are endless activities - lectures, music, classes, card clubs, libraries and more. On-site salon and grocery, plus shuttle, private car for off-schedule rides and doctor transportation; close to Canandaigua stores and hospitals. 24-hour care/extended-care is available for peace of mind - I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across reviews for Ferris Hills at West Lake is strongly positive, with frequent praise for cleanliness, food, staff, amenities, and an active community atmosphere. Reviewers repeatedly describe the facility as bright, cheery, very clean, and well maintained — both the private apartments and common areas receive positive remarks. Apartments are noted as spacious (including two-bedroom units), and the grounds and decor are described as gorgeous and home-like, contributing to a resort-like, pleasant environment.

Dining and food service are a standout theme: reviewers consistently call the food excellent, nutritious, and restaurant-style. Multiple dining options are available, and residents appreciate the quality of meals. Complementing dining are convenient on-site amenities such as a grocery store and a salon/beauty shop, making daily life more self-contained and convenient for residents.

Activities and social programming are another major strength. Reviews mention a wide and diverse slate of offerings including lectures, music performances and visiting musicians, continuing education courses, card clubs, games, libraries, and focused conversation programs (for example, "Today in History"). The community is described as vibrant and active, with residents "out and about," many social opportunities, and programs that appeal to varied interests. This programming supports social engagement and contributes to an overall sense of a lively community.

Care quality and staffing are conveyed positively. Staff are described as caring, pleasant, and responsive; reviewers credit staff with facilitating smooth transitions and with providing peace of mind and a sense of security. The facility offers 24-hour care and an optional extended-care wing, allowing residents to remain in the community as needs change — reviewers frame this as enabling "aging with dignity." Several reviews highlight that residents are well cared for and happy, and some explicitly recommend the community.

Logistics and location are practical strengths: Ferris Hills is close to hospitals and medical facilities, and near stores in Canandaigua. Transportation is available via a shuttle for scheduled trips and there is transportation to doctors; additionally, a private car option exists for off-schedule needs. These features are helpful for maintaining medical and shopping access while living on campus.

Notable patterns and concerns are limited but consistent across reviews. The most cited shortcoming is a desire for more outdoor activities — reviewers specifically requested additional outside programming. Transportation appears generally good for scheduled needs, but reliance on a private car for off-schedule appointments suggests the shuttle runs on a fixed schedule that may not meet all individual timing needs. A couple of comments hint at a mismatch for short-term respite stays, noting that the setting can feel more oriented toward independently living residents than those seeking a higher level of short-term clinical support; this does not negate the presence of 24-hour care, but it suggests that the community’s cultural feel and programming are geared toward independent or assisted residents rather than an intensive medical respite model.

In sum, Ferris Hills at West Lake is presented as a well-maintained, activity-rich community with excellent dining, strong on-site amenities, caring staff, and flexible care options that support long-term residency. Prospective residents and families valuing an active, resort-like independent living experience with access to on-site services and convenient proximity to medical care and shopping will likely find it a very good match. Those whose primary priorities are extensive outdoor programming or very frequent off-schedule transportation should verify current offerings and shuttle policies; families seeking a short-term respite placement that requires highly clinical or hands-on short-stay care may want to confirm fit with the community’s typical resident profile and respite services.

About Ferris Hills At West Lake

Ferris Hills at West Lake sits in Canandaigua with a view of the lake, which gives it a nice, quiet setting, and it's pretty special being in a resort town, so it's a good spot if you like scenic paths for a stroll or spending time in a park. The community serves people aged 55 and over, offering a full range of living options-independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing through the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, so there's a whole mix of folks and staff around who know what they're doing. Apartments come mainly as spacious two-bedroom, two-bath units, and many have views and easy access to walking paths.

Ferris Hills helps residents with daily needs, including diabetic care like blood sugar checks-they'll monitor but can't give insulin shots-and can step in to help people transfer between bed and wheelchair if needed. The staff stay up all night, so support is always there, and you'll find safety and security measures right in place. There's incontinence and non-ambulatory care for people who need extra help, and you get a full continuum of services-so if someone's health changes, care's close by.

Folks like to stay busy, so there's always something like lectures, music performances, card clubs, a knitting group every Monday at 2:30pm, games, and continuing education courses. The indoor areas feel homey, and there are spaces, including some private rooms where smoking is allowed, so people can relax or socialize as much as they wish. Outdoor activities include devotional services off-site and walking by the lake. The new bocce ball court gives another outdoor option for fun or friendly matches.

People don't have to worry about chores much since meals are provided, there's restaurant-style dining, a store for essentials, housekeeping, a hair salon, and maintenance services. For moving around town, there are shuttles to stores and the library, plus a private car service for other trips. Parking is available, and pets like cats and dogs are welcome, making it easier to feel right at home.

The facility's connected with FF Thompson and offers a range of medical help-primary care through groups like Canandaigua Family Practice, pharmacy services, pain management, orthopedics, OB-GYN, pediatrics, pulmonary care, emergency medicine, urgent care, dialysis, diagnostics, and even cancer genetic testing and bariatric surgery programs, so you're covered if health issues come up. Kids can get care too through the pediatrics services. There's also on-site medical nutrition therapy and observation if someone needs it, and a fitness center right in the community.

Each resident has access to a 24-hour emergency call system, and the place offers things like creative card making groups, clubs, and social, cultural, and educational programs that give daily routine and purpose. The community works to keep life vibrant and folks healthy, so activities, amenities, health, and support services blend together, making Ferris Hills feel less like a facility and more like a lived-in, friendly place to age with dignity and comfort.
