    Compassionate care with staffing concerns

I chose this facility for its clean, spacious rooms, homey meals and strong rehab-my grandmother has gotten healthier and feels comfortable and safe with supervised freedom. The CNAs and staff are compassionate, communicative, and often go above and beyond; the lobby, activities and accommodating receptionist impressed us. My main concerns are chronic understaffing that has occasionally led to neglect (bedsores, infections, dehydration) and the hardship of COVID visitation limits plus high costs/insurance gaps. Overall I'm grateful for the caring, high-quality care but remain worried about staffing and expenses.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is mixed-to-positive, with a strong emphasis on compassionate staff, cleanliness, and successful short-term rehabilitation for many residents. Multiple reviewers highlight the facility's effectiveness in physical therapy and rehab, reporting that loved ones got healthier during their stay. The environment is frequently described as comfortable and homey, with a nice lobby and clean, spacious rooms that contribute to a pleasant physical atmosphere. Many reviewers specifically praise the caregiving staff — CNAs, nurses, and reception staff are repeatedly described as friendly, patient, communicative, and willing to go above and beyond. Several accounts note that staff know residents well, provide caring and individualized attention, and create a secure setting that still affords a sense of freedom under supervision.

Care quality and staffing emerge as key themes with a generally positive tilt but important caveats. A substantial number of reviewers express gratitude for compassionate, competent care and highlight successful rehab outcomes, which suggests the facility performs well for short-term therapy and post-hospital recovery for many patients. Communication from staff is noted positively, and families often feel comfortable and reassured about placement decisions. However, there are also serious negative reports that cannot be overlooked: multiple reviewers mention understaffing or short staffing, and a handful of reports describe neglectful outcomes for residents, including bedsores, infections, and dehydration. These clinical concerns suggest that while many residents receive attentive care, care consistency may vary and staffing shortages can materially affect resident outcomes in some cases.

Facilities, dining, and activities receive consistent praise. Beyond cleanliness and spacious rooms, reviewers note that meals look appealing and are enjoyed by residents, and that activities are available to keep residents engaged. The presence or facilitation of dental visits and other supportive services also contributes to a perception of comprehensive resident care. The facility’s secure yet homey atmosphere is mentioned several times, indicating an environment that supports safety without feeling institutional to many families.

Administrative and systemic issues appear as recurring weaknesses. Cost is frequently described as high, and at least one reviewer reported insurance coverage problems tied to hospital observation status that resulted in denial of nursing home coverage. COVID-related visitation restrictions are another recurrent concern, understandably affecting family experience during the pandemic. These points reflect external barriers and policy-driven complications that influence family satisfaction independently of day-to-day caregiving.

In summary, the dominant strengths across reviews are compassionate, communicative staff; high cleanliness standards; comfortable, well-maintained facilities; and effectiveness in physical therapy and short-term rehabilitation. The dominant risks are staffing shortages and reports of neglect or clinical complications for some residents, plus administrative challenges such as high cost and insurance coverage denials, and the impact of COVID visitation limits. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s strong reputation for individualized, clean, and therapy-focused care against the possibility of inconsistent staffing and isolated but serious adverse outcomes. If considering this facility, families may want to ask management about current staffing levels, protocols for pressure wound prevention and infection control, how the facility handles observation-to-admission insurance issues, and how visitation policies are being managed post-COVID to ensure transparency and to mitigate the concerns raised in the reviews.

    M. M. Ewing Continuing Care Center is a nonprofit nursing facility that's part of Thompson Health and also works with UR Medicine and F.F. Thompson Hospital, so that means people living there or using the services have access to lots of different care, like post-hospital stays, dementia and Alzheimer's care, and long-term health support, and the place pays attention to regular financial reporting, including filing Form 990. You'll find both single and semi-private rooms, community dining, activity areas, and staff working in caregiving and administration roles, with Mathew Janczak, DPT, PT, LNHA, as the Vice President of Long Term Care, making sure things run smoothly. They provide skilled nursing and rehab care, offer short-term stays if someone only needs to be there for up to six weeks, and manage post-acute care for rehab after illness or surgery, plus there are connections for quick access to F.F. Thompson Hospital for emergencies, ICU, and outpatient services. The center offers different types of health care, like pulmonary services for breathing problems, pain management, pharmacy help, dialysis and nephrology for kidneys, and cardiopulmonary services, plus a special observation unit for those who need short-term monitoring, and adult day health programs for people who don't stay overnight but still need support. They also have places like Geneva Adult Day Center and The Homestead Adult Day Health Care for adult day services, and The Brighter Day Medical Adult Day Center, offering extra choices for families. The facility covers gynecology and obstetric care-including birthing center classes, breastfeeding help, OB-GYN ultrasound, gynecologic surgery, and cancer genetic testing-and has pediatric care, so there's help for children's health as well as adults, and they offer primary care like family medicine and internal medicine. There are therapy programs for rehabilitation, occupational medicine through HealthWorks-so people can get help with industrial rehab and workplace health-and wellness and nutrition support, like medical nutrition therapy and a Bariatric Surgery Program for those working on weight management, with support for healthy eating and lifestyle, and a pain management service too. For bone, joint, and muscle care, you can find orthopedic surgery and a care team dedicated to those needs, and there are lots of diagnostic and imaging services-CT scans, MRI, mammography, X-ray, breast imaging, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, and bone density scans-plus an interventional radiology department and a special Breast Imaging Center. The staff emphasizes patient-centered care and tries to connect people to educational programs, community health events, and grantmaking projects that help promote wellness and support, whether for nutrition, community outreach, or ongoing health management. The center doesn't just focus on one type of resident-they care for people needing long-term placement, help those with memory issues, and offer short-term help for rehab or respite, all while giving families access to lots of different health services across the Thompson Health system.
