    Renovated facility with caring staff

I placed my mother here and overall I'm pleased - the renovated, very clean facility in a lovely village location has great dining, frequent activities, comfortable apartments with kitchenettes and private baths, and lots of nearby shops. The staff are friendly, caring and attentive; my mom made friends and enjoys the programs. It is on the pricey side and has occasional issues (understaffing, haphazard housekeeping, some medication/communication errors and elevator delays), so I recommend it with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Elderwood Assisted Living at Hamburg are predominantly positive, with the strongest and most consistent praise directed at the facility's cleanliness, the kindness and attentiveness of the majority of staff, attractive communal spaces, and an active social calendar. Many reviewers highlight well‑renovated, bright apartments and common areas, a gorgeous dining room, and a broad range of amenities that support daily life and social engagement. Most families and residents describe smooth admissions experiences, helpful staff who are responsive to questions (including benefits like Veterans' assistance), and a sense that residents are safe, cared for, and able to form new friendships.

Care quality and staff: The staff are repeatedly described as compassionate, attentive, and knowledgeable. Numerous reviewers single out nurses, wait staff, and therapy personnel as strengths. Positive examples include attentive care, proactive therapy and dialysis support, staff who know residents by name, and thoughtful touches such as birthday celebrations and family dining options. However, there are recurring and serious exceptions: multiple reviews describe medication management errors (wrong medications given, pills dropped or placed in unsecured locations, medications left on trays, and doses not witnessed). These medication issues are among the most significant red flags in the review set and warrant direct inquiry from prospective families. There are also reports of occasional unprofessional behavior from leadership (specific concerns about a head nurse or Director), failures to follow up after incidents, and isolated episodes where staff responsibilities were not fully met.

Facilities and housekeeping: The building and public spaces receive high marks for cleanliness and attractive renovation—comments reference immaculate common areas, large dining rooms, a library, a community room with a piano, and adequate parking. Suites and apartments are usually described as comfortable and home-like, with options for private baths and kitchenette areas. At the same time, housekeeping inside private apartments is inconsistent: several reviews note light cleaning only, failure to lift items to dust or vacuum under furniture, inconsistent bed-making, and instances of misplaced or missing personal items (magazines reported taken). Elevator reliability and capacity are a practical concern in older parts of the building—reports of elevator breakdowns and long waits were mentioned and may affect mobility-dependent residents.

Dining and nutrition: Dining is a clear strength for many residents—reviewers frequently praise the beautiful dining room, menu-based dining, variety of choices, daily specials, family dining, and pleasant dining staff. Positive notes include tasty meals, celebratory meals, and accommodating service. A minority of reviewers, however, found food to be bland or mediocre, indicating variability in culinary satisfaction. Prospective residents should sample meals and ask about menu rotation and special diets to confirm fit.

Activities and social life: The facility offers a robust activities program with a full calendar: bingo, arts and crafts, monthly live music, community dinners, outings and day trips, and therapy/exercise programming. Multiple reviewers report that their family member has made friends and enjoys the offerings. Still, some residents find particular activities unappealing, insufficiently engaging, or limited by mobility constraints and COVID-related restrictions. Activity attractiveness appears somewhat subjective and varies by resident interests—those who seek active social engagement generally find ample opportunities; those less interested or with specific mobility needs may feel underserved by some offerings.

Management, communication and patterns of concern: While many reviewers describe professional, helpful administration and smooth transitions at move-in, others report communication breakdowns, questionable practices (improper van bookings), and unprofessional interactions with leadership. Recurrent, notable negative patterns include medication administration lapses and reports of missing personal items—issues that families should prioritize asking management about during tours. Several reviewers also mention that condolences or formal acknowledgment did not occur after a resident's death, which some families perceived as a lack of compassion or protocol.

Location, cost and occupancy: The location is frequently described as convenient—near downtown, shops, and family homes—with a village atmosphere that many appreciate. Outdoor green space is limited for a number of reviewers, and some describe the facility as sited in a parking-lot setting rather than a nature-rich environment. Cost perceptions vary: many consider the facility reasonably priced for the services provided, while others describe it as expensive or cite rent increases that affected perceived value. The facility also appears to be popular and often fully occupied, so availability can be limited.

Bottom line and recommendations: The dominant themes are strong cleanliness, friendly and attentive day-to-day staff, attractive dining and common areas, and an active social program—factors that lead the majority of reviewers to recommend Elderwood Assisted Living at Hamburg. Nevertheless, there are consistent and important concerns that prospective residents and family members should investigate before committing: ask detailed, specific questions about medication administration policies and error reporting; verify housekeeping scope and frequency for private apartments; inquire about lost-item policies and security for personal effects; confirm elevator reliability and contingency plans; sample meals; review activity offerings for individual interests and mobility needs; request clarity on rent structure and potential increases; and ask how the community handles bereavement and communication after a resident death. Given the mixture of overwhelmingly positive daily‑life reports alongside recurrent operational concerns (particularly medication management and some housekeeping/loss issues), a careful, targeted tour and conversation with clinical leadership is recommended to verify that the facility’s strengths align with the prospective resident’s priorities and risks.
