    Renovated facility but serious issues

I've been a long-term patron: the place is nicely renovated, clean in many areas, with a courtyard, large layout, community rooms, diverse activities, and generally friendly, knowledgeable staff and on-site nursing. However I've also encountered strong lingering odors and even cockroaches, inconsistent cleanliness, poor/insufficient meals (and signs of underfeeding/dehydration), understaffing, medication mishandling and questionable management - it's expensive, so I recommend with serious reservations.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews for Elderwood Village at St. Gregory Court are mixed, with a substantial number of positive comments about staff demeanor, recent renovations, on-site amenities and activities, but also several serious negative reports that raise safety and quality concerns. Multiple reviewers praise friendliness and helpfulness among staff and point to the facility’s renovated appearance, courtyard, community rooms, and organized activities. At the same time, other reviewers describe operational and care-related issues including pest problems, understaffing, and medication and nutrition concerns.

Staff and care quality: Many reviewers specifically call out friendly, knowledgeable staff and positive interactions with the director and tour personnel. Some family members and long-term residents report a good level of care and positive personal experiences. However, there are consistent criticisms indicating understaffing and that nursing staff are not on-site 24/7, which may make the facility unsuitable for residents with higher medical needs. More serious reports include underfed residents, signs of dehydration, and inadequate medication handling — issues that directly affect resident safety. These divergent reports create a pattern of inconsistency in the level of care: while some residents receive attentive care, others appear to have experienced lapses that warrant investigation.

Facility condition and cleanliness: Several reviewers describe the facility as clean and recently renovated, and they appreciate amenities such as a courtyard and well-kept community areas. Conversely, other reviewers report strong or lingering odors, run-down furniture, and general cleanliness concerns. The most alarming of the negative reports is a cockroach infestation, which, if accurate, is a significant operational and health problem. The facility’s large layout is described positively by some for space but negatively by others because it can complicate room placement and make it difficult to secure a room close to shared spaces.

Dining and nutrition: Opinions about meals are split. Some reviewers praise the food and even highlight treats like cookies from the kitchen; others strongly dislike the meals and report poor food quality. Given the reports of underfed residents and dehydration from some reviewers, the mixed feedback suggests variability in meal service and monitoring of resident intake. Potential residents and families should directly inquire about meal plans, accommodations for preferences or dietary needs, and how staff monitor residents’ nutrition and hydration.

Activities and community life: Activities receive generally positive mentions — reviewers note a variety of programming and availability of religious services, which contributes to an active community life for many residents. That said, several reviewers say that while activities are offered, they are not a good fit for every resident, indicating that program variety and engagement levels may not meet all individual preferences.

Management, pricing, and transparency: Some experiences report a welcoming admissions process with a director who greets visitors and knowledgeable tour guides, which suggests strengths in outreach and customer service. At the same time, other reviewers accuse management of being underqualified, and there are reports of serious operational failures (pest control, medication handling). Price is described as higher than desired by at least one reviewer, which, combined with reports of inconsistent care and cleanliness, raises questions about value for money for prospective residents.

Conclusion and recommended next steps: The review set shows a facility with clear strengths — friendly frontline staff, renovated spaces, pleasant outdoor areas, active programming and religious services — but it also includes several severe red flags that require verification before making a placement decision. Prospective residents and families should schedule an in-person tour, ask specifically about staffing levels and shift coverage (including whether skilled nursing is available 24/7), review recent health inspections and pest-control records, request documentation about medication management policies and nutrition/hydration monitoring, sample meal offerings, and confirm room placement options within the large layout. Because the reviews are mixed with both highly positive and seriously negative reports, due diligence and targeted questions are important to determine if Elderwood Village at St. Gregory Court will meet a particular resident’s medical, safety, and lifestyle needs.
