    Gorgeous grounds, improved but problematic

I've lived here about nine months and have very mixed feelings. The facility and grounds are gorgeous - elegant decor, impressive architecture, a beautiful courtyard, spacious clean rooms with new furniture, a gym, activities, and generally very good homemade food. New management since 2023 has improved things: staff are friendly and approachable, maintenance is more responsive, and residents seem happier. That said, there have been serious problems (past bug reports, maintenance lapses, medication/communication failures, and billing or staff-conduct complaints), so I recommend visiting, asking direct questions, and watching how issues are handled before deciding.

    Summary review

The reviews for Alpine House of Columbus are highly polarized, with clear reports of both meaningful improvements and serious, sometimes alarming, problems. Several reviewers describe a facility with evident potential — an attractive building, spacious rooms, a pleasant courtyard, and a range of activities — and note significant positive changes since new management took over in 2023. At the same time, multiple other reviews recount severe deficiencies in care, sanitation, and management integrity that raise important safety and ethical concerns.

Care quality and resident wellbeing are major points of divergence. Positive accounts emphasize attentive staff, medication assistance, housekeeping, laundry service, and a home-like atmosphere where residents feel valued. These reviewers describe responsive management, friendly employees, and residents who participate in activities and social life. Conversely, multiple negative reviews describe missed medications (including reports of residents going several days without meds), disinterested nursing staff, and neglect of residents with limited mobility — including reports that some residents were not bathed for over a week. Such reports point to potentially dangerous lapses in basic care and monitoring for vulnerable residents.

Staff behavior and management receive mixed but consequential feedback. Many reviewers praise staff as friendly, approachable, and collaborative under the newer management team, noting improved communication and responsiveness. However, other reviews allege serious problems: staff dishonesty, financial deception, double billing, and recordings of abusive language directed at residents. There are also allegations of unethical managerial behavior (personal relationships with staff on site) and mentions of lawsuits or pending legal issues. Taken together, these comments suggest both real improvements for some residents and unresolved cultural or oversight problems that have led to mistrust among other families.

Facilities and maintenance show a similar split. Several reviewers praise the building's architecture, elegant decor, roomy accommodations, new furniture and beds, and functional amenities (elevator, gym, outdoor seating). Some describe a clean, bug-free environment after an initial issue was addressed. But other reviewers report mold, bed bug infestations (including an explicit sign admitting bed bugs), cracked paint, ragged doors, and dirty carpets. These contradictory descriptions suggest inconsistent upkeep or that conditions have changed over time — some reports reference initial bug problems later resolved, while others indicate persistent sanitation issues.

Dining and activities are also described very differently by different reviewers. Positive reviewers report homemade, good-quality meals, plentiful beverages, and a schedule of activities such as bingo, charades, and games that contribute to residents' wellbeing. Negative reviewers describe cold, low-variety food or “slop” meals and claim residents were forced to order outside food that many could not afford. This split could reflect changes in kitchen staff or management, variability by unit or meal period, or different expectations among reviewers.

A clear pattern in the reviews is the apparent timeline and variability of experience: several reviewers specifically note that conditions improved under new management in 2023 (new furniture, fewer bugs, better staff collaboration and approachability), while a number of the most severe complaints — bed bugs, medication lapses, abusive or dishonest staff — are either older reports or presented as problems that predated or coincided with the transition. Nonetheless, a subset of recent reviews still report very serious problems, indicating that improvements may not be uniform across the facility or that some systemic issues remain.

In summary, Alpine House of Columbus presents a mixed picture. Strengths reported by many include friendly staff (in numerous accounts), spacious rooms, an attractive building, active programming, and responsive maintenance under newer management. Significant and recurring concerns include medication errors/shortages, neglect of personal care for some residents, pest and sanitation issues (notably bed bugs and mold), allegations of financial and ethical misconduct by staff/management, inconsistent food quality, and poor communication in some cases. Prospective residents and families should seek up-to-date verification: tour the facility, ask about recent pest-control records, review medication administration protocols, request references from current residents and families, ask about complaint resolution procedures, and confirm the current management team and licensing/complaint history to determine whether the positive changes noted by some reviewers are consistent and sustained.

    About Alpine House of Columbus

Alpine House of Columbus provides assisted living services with staff available around the clock, so residents can get help in emergencies whenever they need it, which really puts families at ease, and you'll find a nice variety of room types, like studio apartments, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, and even semi-private options, all with safety features like emergency call systems and ADA-compliant bathrooms that have grab rails and safety chairs, plus those rooms come with a kitchenette, a microwave, a mini-fridge, a closet, cable TV, and high-speed internet, so people can keep a bit of their independence and privacy. Care staff help with day-to-day activities, like bathing, dressing, transferring from bed to wheelchair, and making sure medication is given correctly and on time-there's a nurse on-call 24 hours and personal care aides who you'll see around during the day, and the facility monitors insulin for people with diabetes too. Alpine House offers meals prepared by a chef and meal planner, with choices for people who need diabetic or allergy-sensitive food, and there's restaurant-style dining in a big common dining room or you can pick up a snack anytime during the day because food and snacks are always available, and families don't need to worry about meal prep or grocery shopping.

Activities are important here, and days fill up quickly with on-site events, arts and crafts, music, movie nights, and exercise classes, while there's also an activity room, a fitness room, a library, and even a spa and a hot tub if you want some relaxation, plus you often see planned outings outside the building to keep everyone connected with the wider community and engaged. Staff encourage people to get involved in social programs and field trips-the community room and activity spaces are for all kinds of gatherings, and there's a resident-run activities program that means folks have some say in what goes on. Alpine House has safety taken care of, too, with things like fire sprinklers, coded entry with safety alarms, 24-hour video monitoring, and several call light stations in every suite so people can always reach someone if something happens.

Housekeeping, laundry, linen, and dry-cleaning services are available, so nobody has to worry about chores piling up, and there's transportation and parking for residents and guests. The outdoor spaces have walking paths and gardens, and inside there's a media room, a private meeting and dining room, and a salon for haircuts, all designed to help everyone feel comfortable and cared for, which definitely makes the place feel peaceful and friendly for both residents and their families. They don't allow pets, which makes it safer and more comfortable for people who may not want animals around, and the building is all on one level or easy to get around in for people who use wheelchairs or need a bit of help moving about. People with more serious needs can count on 24-hour supervision and access to health services including hospice and home health care, and Alpine House helps people arrange telehealth appointments and onsite therapy with visiting nurses and therapists whenever that's needed.

Payment is by check or credit card, and prices depend on how much care a person needs-whether that's high, medium, or low, so there's less confusion or stress around bills. Alpine House participates in the ALF Waiver for qualified residents, and it's licensed by the Ohio Department of Health and certified by the Ohio Department of Aging, plus it's been operating for over thirty years, so there's a long track record of understanding what seniors need as they age. Everything from a big dining room to a computer room, to strong Wi-Fi, to daily activities and special parties gets included to make life as full and easy as possible, and staff are known for being kind, helpful, and friendly, staying respectful whether they're helping someone with a shower, a transfer, or just chatting about the weather, which helps make the whole place feel welcoming and comfortable for everyone, most would agree. If families want to visit or learn more, they can come during consultation hours in the week or set up a time on a weekend, and there's a brochure available with more details, but mainly folks looking for a senior living place where health, safety, and helpfulness matter will find Alpine House of Columbus worth considering.
