    Good care possible, but inconsistent

I have mixed feelings. Many caregivers were kind, attentive and family-like - therapy, activities, and meals were often excellent and the building was clean and well-run. But care was inconsistent: I experienced/observed missed checks, poor communication, lost belongings, rude or overworked staff, and alarming safety/neglect incidents that led to serious harm for some residents. In short: great care is possible here, but be cautious, ask lots of questions, and monitor closely.

    Summary review

The reviews for Delaware Court Healthcare Center are highly polarized, producing a mixed overall picture in which many families and residents praise the facility while a number of reviews report serious failures and safety incidents. A substantial portion of reviewers describe the staff as caring, attentive, and family-oriented. Positive accounts commonly mention frequent checks, respectful attendants, a clean and well-maintained environment with a pleasant or fresh smell, enjoyable activities (bingo, talent shows, games, crafts), and therapy programs that aided rehabilitation and recovery. Meals are frequently described as better than typical nursing-home food, with some families noting tasty variety and special treats. Several reviewers explicitly recommend the facility for short-term rehab, respite care, or after-care, and some describe strong communication and progress updates from knowledgeable staff.

Counterbalancing these favorable reports are multiple serious allegations that raise safety and management concerns. Several reviews allege nursing neglect and negligent care, including reports of preventable injury leading to leg amputation, deep infection, and at least one death after admission. Other accounts claim insufficient supervision (residents left unattended or escaping while calling for help), periods with no nurse available, and overworked aides. Some families report medicines were withheld or used inappropriately to sedate residents (mentions of Haldol and Trazodone), incidents of humiliation or abusive behavior by staff, and threats to transfer residents—issues that create substantial emotional distress for families and indicate inconsistent standards of care.

Facility and operations feedback is mixed. Many reviewers praise cleanliness, upkeep, and pleasant odors, yet others report hygiene problems such as flies, dirty conditions, and mold in the kitchen that they claim management did not address. Administrative concerns include reports of cash-only payment preferences or a specific cash charge of $150, loss of belongings, and poor communication with families in certain cases. Food receives varied feedback: several families find meals good or better-than-average, while others describe the food as bland or terrible. Activities and amenities (birdcage, aquariums, organized events) are regularly appreciated and contribute positively to residents' experiences when present and well-run.

A clear pattern across the reviews is inconsistency. Many positive experiences coexist with severe negative incidents, often attributed to variation between individual staff members, shifts, or time periods. Multiple reviewers emphasize that while some staff are wonderful and provide excellent care, others are neglectful or abusive, producing very different outcomes for residents. This variability affects perceptions of safety, quality, and reliability. While therapy and rehab services are frequently noted as strengths, serious allegations regarding neglect, infection, and administrative shortcomings are significant and recurring enough to warrant caution.

In sum, Delaware Court Healthcare Center has demonstrable strengths — notably caring and effective staff in many reports, good rehabilitation services, engaging activities, and generally clean facilities according to many reviewers. However, the presence of multiple grave complaints (medical neglect, severe infections, allegations of inappropriate sedation, poor supervision, and management issues such as unaddressed mold or questionable payment practices) means experiences can differ dramatically. Prospective residents and families should weigh both sets of feedback, ask pointed questions about staffing levels, incident reporting, infection control, medication practices, supervision protocols, and financial policies, and consider visiting the facility multiple times and speaking with current families to assess consistency before making decisions.
