    Clean, caring community with concerns

I lived here four years and overall liked the beautifully decorated, very clean, home-like community with kind, attentive staff, good meals, and lots of activities (music, bingo, trick-or-treat). Management and long-tenured staff were outstanding and gave loving, high-quality care that brought me peace of mind. That said, I did see serious lapses in the memory-care area and experienced disagreements about care (and the cost is high), so weigh those concerns - but I still recommend it for cleanliness, caring staff, and community life.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive, with many reviewers praising the facility for its caring culture, cleanliness, and active social life. A substantial number of comments highlight attentive, loving care and an environment that provides peace of mind for families. Staff are repeatedly described as kind, helpful, and friendly; several reviewers specifically note long-tenured, stable staffing and outstanding management. Cleanliness is a consistent strength, with multiple reviewers remarking that the building smells good, residents are well-groomed, and common areas are maintained to a high standard. The atmosphere is frequently described as home-like and family-oriented, contributing to many recommendations from residents and families.

Activities and social programming are another strong theme. Reviewers report lots of activities, often multiple daily, with a praised activities director and regular events such as bingo, musicians in the dining room, and holiday programs like trick-or-treat with visiting children. Occasional excursions are offered, adding variety to programming. These elements contribute to an engaged resident community and are frequently cited as reasons reviewers highly recommend the facility.

Dining responses are mixed but generally lean positive. Several reviewers state that meals are pretty good and note pleasant dining experiences enhanced by live musicians. However, some reviewers specifically call out cafeteria-style dining as a detractor, indicating that while food quality may be acceptable to many, the service model or presentation may not meet everyone's expectations.

Despite the many positive themes, there are important negative reports that introduce notable concerns and variability in experience. Multiple reviewers describe inconsistent care — while many experienced high-quality, attentive care, others reported care not being provided, disagreements with staff, and even the most serious claims of negligence leading to a family member's death. There are explicit concerns about the memory care unit in particular, and at least one reviewer reported moving a relative out due to care issues. These serious negative reports contrast sharply with the majority of positive accounts and suggest that resident experience may vary by unit, staff on duty, or over time.

Cost is also a concern for some reviewers; one summary specifically notes a high cost on the order of ~$100,000. Combined with the reports of inconsistent care and memory care issues, cost becomes a significant factor families should weigh when considering this community. Communication or relationship issues between some families and staff were mentioned a few times, indicating that while many families praise staff interactions, others have experienced disagreements or dissatisfaction.

In summary, St Katharine Drexel Retirement is frequently described as a clean, welcoming community with a warm staff culture, robust activities, and strong management. Those are clear strengths reflected across many reviews. However, the presence of severe negative reports — especially related to memory care and alleged negligence — and the mention of high cost introduce important caveats. Prospective residents and families should take away that the facility appears to offer excellent care and programming for many residents, but outcomes may not be uniformly consistent across all units or time periods. During evaluation, visitors should probe specifically about memory care practices, staffing levels and turnover, incident reporting and resolution, dining service style, and contract/cost details to reconcile the generally favorable consensus with the serious isolated reports.
