    Caring staff, spacious, secure community

I moved my mom here and we're very pleased. CJ Swanson and the staff are genuinely caring and professional, the grounds and courtyard are immaculately kept, and apartments are spacious with nice updates. With onsite amenities (theatre, community room, coffee shop), included services (utilities, internet, laundry, transport, meal options) and a secure, peaceful atmosphere, I highly recommend this lovely, resident-focused community.

    Summary of reviews

Scandia Retirement Community presents as a well-maintained independent-living campus with extensive amenities and an emphasis on resident comfort. The property is described consistently as clean, recently renovated, and attractively landscaped, with a gated entry, secure parking, and a central location close to shopping, a library, medical offices, and places of worship. Apartment units are generally described as spacious and updated (granite counters, ample storage); on-site features include a coffee shop, community gathering spaces, a movie/theater room, and an attractive courtyard with a fountain that contributes to a calm, home-like atmosphere.

Care and daily services are a prominent strength. Reviewers highlight a staff culture that is compassionate, attentive, and resident-centered; the administrator (named in multiple comments) is frequently cited for hands-on leadership and active involvement in resident life. Included and available services often cover housekeeping, weekly cleaning, laundry, transportation for appointments, chauffeur-style grocery runs, and assistance with errands or downsizing. Emergency-call capabilities and affirmative staff response to urgent needs are mentioned, and families commonly characterize the environment as safe and nurturing.

Dining and programming are well developed but show variability. The community offers flexible meal-plan options, the ability to prepare small meals in-unit, and take-out or meal-pickup assistance; social dining and themed events are part of the offerings. At the same time, there are operational notes about inconsistent meal-service delivery and occasional service continuity issues. Programming includes a range of social activities — movies, bingo, pizza parties, tea parties, and seasonal events — which support active social engagement, particularly within the smaller, close-knit resident population.

Prospective residents should clarify a few operational details during a tour. Units are often presented unfurnished, so understanding move-in expectations is important. There are isolated maintenance and safety observations (for example, surface slickness near drainage) that suggest asking about routine exterior maintenance and fall-prevention checks. Reviewers also indicate variability in management and ownership interpersonal style; while many praise leadership, a small number reference differing experiences with individual managers, so confirming communication practices and decision-making processes is advisable. Finally, because dining service quality and delivery have been described as inconsistent, confirm current dining arrangements, sample menus, and contingency plans.

Overall, Scandia appears to be a small, service-rich independent living community with strong landscaping and facility upkeep, a supportive staff culture, and many included services that simplify daily living. Families and residents considering Scandia would benefit from an in-person visit focused on verifying meal-service reliability, furnishing and move-in terms, maintenance protocols, and management communication practices to ensure alignment with individual expectations.
