    Gorgeous facility, deceptive care, harm

I had a mixed experience. The place is gorgeous, very clean, with great activities, chef-prepared meals and many warm, caring staff who create a homey, engaging atmosphere. But I also experienced deceptive communication, hidden fees and a troubling lack of transparency and supervision - my loved one developed a bedsore, was returned filthy and unable to hold their head, and we ultimately removed them. If you consider this facility, visit unannounced, get everything in writing, and be cautious about high-care needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for The Addison of McCullough Place skew strongly positive: most reviewers describe a gorgeous, clean, well-kept community with a home-like, welcoming atmosphere. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, caring, compassionate, and attentive; many accounts praise admissions, administrative leadership, and caregivers for being helpful, cheerful, and willing to work with families. Residents and visitors report lively engagement, frequent activities, and a warm communal environment that many characterize as “family-like.” The dining area and food receive consistent commendations from numerous reviewers, who compare the dining room favorably to restaurants and note chef-prepared meals with menu choices and attractive table settings. Physical features such as spacious units, private bathrooms, wide hallways, a circular courtyard with a gazebo, and clean common spaces are frequently highlighted as important strengths.

Care quality and staffing: A large portion of reviewers emphasize attentive, compassionate caregiving and an upbeat staff culture. Specific positives include medication dispensing, free transportation to medical appointments, on-site laundry/room cleaning by staff, and a strong activity calendar (exercise classes, live music, church services, card and board games, crafts, and speaker events). Many family members report good communication from staff and satisfaction with move-in and respite processes. Several reviews also reflect pride and satisfaction from staff members who enjoy working there, which supports the perception of a positive workplace culture and may contribute to resident well-being.

Notable negative patterns: Interspersed with the overwhelmingly positive commentary are a number of serious and specific concerns that cannot be overlooked. Several reviewers report alarming care failures — including development of a bedsore within a week, reports of a resident in filthy clothing or being unclean, and statements that a resident was unable to hold their head or stand. Some families describe misleading updates, lack of transparency, and what they characterize as deception by staff or administration. There are also reports of insufficient supervision for certain residents and at least one account of a family removing a loved one after an unannounced visit revealed problems. These accounts suggest variability in care quality and potential lapses in clinical or daily care for some residents.

Costs, transparency, and management communication: Another recurring theme concerns pricing and transparency. Multiple reviewers flagged hidden fees, lack of clear pricing, and perceptions that the community is expensive for the level of care delivered. While many families praised administrative staff for helpfulness and offered discounts or flexible solutions, others criticized management communication and transparency. This mixed feedback points to variability in administrative interactions and contract/fee disclosures.

Dining and activities: Dining and programming are major strengths for the facility overall. Numerous reviewers praise the quality of meals, the dining room experience, and the menu-order model. Activity offerings are diverse and well-attended: live musicians, entertainers, exercise and yoga classes, religious services, trivia, bingo, and social hours are frequently mentioned. These offerings contribute to an engaged, lively resident population and are cited as reasons families feel their relatives enjoy life at the community.

Bottom line and considerations for prospective families: The dominant theme across reviews is very positive — a beautiful, clean, activity-rich community staffed by many caring and dedicated employees. However, the presence of several serious negative reports (bed sores, neglect, deceptive communication, and removal of residents following unannounced visits) introduces concern about consistency of care and transparency in some situations. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong positive experiences against the few but significant negative incidents. When evaluating this community, request written details about staffing ratios, care-plan oversight, recent inspection and incident records, explicit fee schedules and all potential additional charges, examples of clinical protocols (wound care, hygiene assistance), and references from current families. Consider an unannounced daytime and evening visit, ask about how the community handles complaints and family communication, and verify how medication administration, supervision, and individualized care needs are documented and monitored. These steps will help reconcile the generally excellent reputation with the concerning reports and determine whether the facility reliably meets the specific needs of a prospective resident.

About The Addison of McCullough Place

The Addison of McCullough Place sits in a single-story building that's clean, well-kept, and feels like home from the moment you walk in, with friendly staff who know the residents by name and treat everyone like family, and you can really see kindness from the administration all the way down because they keep the place warm, caring, and bright, with residents often mentioning how the staff's genuine help makes everyone comfortable and welcome. The community has assisted living, independent living, and something called "Memory Care" for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia, so there's support for all sorts of needs from simple help with bathing and dressing to medication management and 24/7 care, and they've got personal care, short-term stays, respite programs, and even home care for those who want to stay home longer but need companionship or non-medical care.

The Addison has all the usual things you'd expect, like fitness and recreation activities, daily events that include yoga and exercise classes, live music, church services, crafts, bingo, movie nights, trivia, and even happy hour with music; some activities are even run by the residents themselves, which keeps things lively and helps everyone stay social. There are chef-prepared meals served every day, ordered from a rotating menu, and they even do private dining when people want it, always focusing on healthy and tasty options, and if folks want a snack, the staff makes sure nobody goes hungry. The building has wide, handicap accessible halls, enough open spaces for socializing, a hair salon and barber, a library, a garden, neat walking paths outside, an outdoor courtyard, and an activity room; there's also high-speed Wi-Fi available throughout, so it doesn't feel cut off from the world. Residents can have their pets, and there's a community dog around the place that brings a bit of extra joy to the day when folks see him; the policy allows animals inside the apartments.

The Addison coordinates care with outside doctors and clinics and sits close to places like Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and Western PA Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, making it easier on families, and there's always help on hand thanks to the 24-hour supervision, a round-the-clock call system, and a professional support team available any hour, day or night. Staff at Addison are often described as friendly, polite, helpful, and welcoming, and you'll see they go out of their way to treat everyone with respect and dignity, offering help when asked-whether it's housekeeping, laundry, or getting ready for the day-all in a way that values independence but gives support when it's needed. Memory Care is designed to prevent wandering and reduce confusion, with programs set up to help people remember the good moments and stay safe, while the overall environment feels steady and home-like, not institutional.

Transportation is available for outings or appointments, and the building is arranged so it's easy to move around, whether someone's more independent or needs nursing care, and respite and short-term options are available for families who need a break, plus affordable housing for those that need it. Addison's programming is set up so there's something to learn or enjoy just about every day, always with an eye on helping people stay active and make new friends, and the place strives for a homey feeling more than anything fancy. Pricing isn't published, but people often bring up the value of care and the strong effort to keep things clean. Residents often say it feels like living in a close-knit group, where everyone's encouraged to join in and make the most of each day, and reviews rate Addison of McCullough Place at 4.5 stars, with lots of praise for staff warmth and the careful attention given to folks living there.
