    Spotless care marred by management

I had mixed experience: the facility is spotless, with nice grounds, outdoor visiting, holiday touches, flexible meals, and many compassionate caregivers who provided excellent hygiene and family-like care. However, management was often unprofessional and rude, many good staff were fired, it felt short-staffed, and I witnessed staff arguing in front of residents and a nurse nodding off with no action taken - that made my stay feel like a nightmare despite the caring workers.

    Summary review

The review set for Haven Convalescent Home is highly polarized, with clear and repeated praise for day-to-day resident care and facility upkeep on one hand and strong complaints about management and staff behavior on the other. Multiple reviewers emphasize compassionate caregiving, excellent clinical care, and outstanding hygiene and skin care for residents. Clean rooms and a well-maintained facility are mentioned consistently, as are pleasant outdoor spaces — bird feeders, attractive grounds, and designated outdoor visiting areas — which reviewers appreciate for family visits. Seasonal touches such as holiday decorations and gifts are noted, suggesting attention to residents' quality of life and community atmosphere. Practical conveniences also appear: adequate meals with flexible options and an overall location that is convenient for families, plus reports of the owner being present daily and accessible to families.

Despite those positives, an equally strong current of negative commentary centers on staffing, supervision, and management conduct. Several reviewers describe short-staffing problems, which can undermine care even where caregivers are otherwise compassionate. More serious are multiple allegations of unprofessional behavior by leadership: reports that the boss or owner is disrespectful to workers, that staff are treated poorly or “like garbage,” and that many long-time, well-regarded employees have been fired. Reviewers also describe staff arguing openly at the nurses’ station or front desk and, in at least one account, a nurse observed nodding off on duty. These accounts combine into descriptions of a negative atmosphere and low morale among employees, and there are claims that management failed to take action when problems were raised.

The contrast between glowing accounts and harsh criticism is a dominant pattern. Some reviews call Haven the very best nursing home in New Castle and express gratitude to named owners (Mark and the Tanner family) and staff; others call it a nightmare, labeling the place rude, mean, uncomfortable, or unprofessional. This split suggests either significant variability in experiences over time (for example, changes in leadership or staffing), marked differences between shifts or units, or highly subjective experiences among reviewers. The repeated mentions of owner presence and attentiveness in positive reviews sit in tension with reports of the owner being rude and contributing to a negative atmosphere in negative reviews.

On facilities and resident life, the feedback is predominantly positive and consistent: cleanliness, personal skin care, holiday engagement, outdoor visiting, and flexible meal options are strong points noted by multiple reviewers. Those tangible aspects of the environment appear to be maintained well regardless of the conflicting reports about interpersonal dynamics.

In sum, Haven Convalescent Home shows clear strengths in resident hygiene, cleanliness, environment, and some elements of compassionate care and family engagement. However, recurring and serious concerns about staffing levels, staff morale, management conduct, and supervision (including at least one report of inattentive nursing) are prominent and could materially affect resident experience and safety. The reviews indicate a facility with both strong caregiving practices and troubling organizational issues; prospective residents and families should consider visiting in person, observe staff-resident interactions across multiple times/shifts, and ask management about current staffing levels, turnover, and what steps have been taken to address reported problems before making decisions.

    About Haven Convalescent Home

Haven Convalescent Home sits in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and has been owned by the Tanner family since 1958, which makes it the only family-owned and operated nursing facility around that area, and it seems people know it for a steady way of doing things year after year, but you won't find any online reviews posted just yet. This facility runs with a for-profit approach and holds 91 certified beds, where most days you'll find about 88 residents staying, and you'll see people in private, semi-private, or even four-bed rooms, depending on what kind of setup suits them. Haven provides both short-term and long-term stays for older adults who need 24-hour nursing and personal care, and the team includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and a licensed dietitian, so they've got most angles covered health-wise. Staff members spend about 3.39 nurse hours per resident per day, but nurse turnover has reached 45.6% lately, which is something people might want to keep in mind. The home is licensed by the state and certified for both Medicare and Medicaid coverage.

People will notice that the facility aims to treat residents and their families like part of their own family, and they focus their services on convalescent and recovery care, with nursing care, assisted living, therapy offerings, and restorative programs meant to help folks regain independence and maintain mental and physical well-being. They've got recreational activities on the schedule and meal services, and there's a steady routine, which is typical for places like this. According to the latest state findings, Haven Convalescent Home has a five-star rating from the Pennsylvania Department of Health for the last two years, and it's managed to avoid fines or payment suspensions over the past three years. When an inspection happened, the main issue found was one infection control deficiency (marked as F0880) because the facility hadn't fully put in place an infection prevention and control program as expected, and this is the only deficiency currently on record. The ownership group behind Haven includes Dominick Grant, Charles Tanner, Elaine Tanner, Mark Tanner, and Rachel Tanner. All care is monitored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the average level of care here, by case mix index, runs above what the state usually sees. Haven offers many of the usual amenities you'd expect from a skilled nursing and convalescent home, though specifics aren't listed, and people looking for therapy or social activities should find these services on-site as part of their stay.
