    Wonderful caregivers despite cramped facility

I lived here and the staff were wonderful - caring, friendly, and provided excellent care; the residents were pleasant too. The building is an old converted house: crowded four-person rooms, narrow poorly lit hallways and dated furnishings. It felt clean overall but rugs gave off an odor and ventilation/windows were lacking; activities only happen sometimes. Despite the dated, cramped facility, the caregivers made it a great fit.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but leans strongly positive about the human side of care and decidedly critical about the physical facility. Multiple reviewers emphasize exceptional, compassionate staff and high-quality caregiving; these are the most consistent and strongest positives. At the same time, the building itself is repeatedly described as old, cramped, and dated, and several specific facility-related concerns recur across the summaries.

Care quality and staff: Reviewers consistently praise the caregivers and staff. Words and phrases used include "fantastic staff," "wonderful staff," "great staff," "friendly, caring," and statements that care was "superior to other care homes." One reviewer explicitly noted that caregivers "took nice care," and others said the care was excellent. The presence of "phenomenal residents" and a "friendly community" reinforces a warm social environment. Overall, the pattern indicates strong personal attention, friendliness, and a level of care that some reviewers viewed as better than alternatives.

Facilities and physical environment: In contrast to the positive comments about staff, the physical plant draws repeated criticism. The facility is described as an "old facility" and a "converted house," which appears to create several practical drawbacks: narrow hallways, crowded conditions (notably four-person rooms), and an overall unimpressive appearance. Multiple reviewers note "old furnishings" and poor lighting. Ventilation and natural light are also flagged as problems—reviewers mention "poor ventilation" and "not enough windows." There is a specific odor concern: one reviewer reported an "odor from rugs," while others said there were "no odors," so there is some inconsistency in experiences. Nonetheless, complaints about dated decor, cramped shared rooms, and layout limitations are consistent themes.

Activities and daily life: Activity programming is mentioned but not in depth. Reviews say "activities sometimes," suggesting the availability of activities but perhaps irregular scheduling or limited variety. This points to an activity program that exists but may be inconsistent or not robustly staffed. There are no detailed comments about the quality or types of activities.

Dining, management, and other services: The supplied reviews do not provide specific information about dining, menu quality, medical management, or administrative leadership. Because reviewers repeatedly comment on staff and care quality, it implies positive day-to-day interactions with caregivers; however, there are no explicit remarks about management responsiveness, administrative practices, meal services, medication management, or clinical oversight. These are therefore areas where prospective families would need to seek more information.

Notable patterns and overall assessment: The strongest and most consistent positive theme is human — attentive, friendly, and competent staff and a warm resident community. The strongest negative theme is the building and physical accommodations: an older converted house with cramped multi-bed rooms, narrow and dimly lit corridors, dated furnishings, and some ventilation/odor issues. Several reviewers did say the home was "very clean" and "no odors," so cleanliness may be generally maintained despite the building's age, though isolated odor issues were reported.

In summary, Upton’s Country Comfort Personal Care Home appears to offer very good person-centered care delivered by compassionate staff in a welcoming resident community, but prospective residents and families should weigh those strengths against the limitations of an older, converted facility. If a homelike atmosphere and attentive caregivers are the top priorities, the home may be a great fit. If private rooms, modern amenities, abundant natural light, and spacious, purpose-built layouts are priorities, the physical limitations noted in the reviews could be significant drawbacks. Additional questions to ask the facility would include specifics about room configurations, ventilation and window access, activity schedules, and any renovation or maintenance plans to address the dated aspects of the building.

About Upton’s Country Comfort Personal Care Home

Upton's Country Comfort Personal Care Home sits in a quiet countryside neighborhood in Normalville and offers assisted living and memory care for up to 16 residents, and folks say the setting's peaceful and the views out the windows are pleasant, which isn't something you get everywhere, so if you like the country, that's a plus. The care team there stays on-site all day and night, helping residents with daily needs like grooming, bathing, and reminders for medications, and they're trained to handle wandering or physical behaviors, which is important if someone has memory issues or tends to move around a bit much. The community's designed to feel warm and welcoming, with well-kept living spaces, shared rooms starting at $1,089, and private studio rooms at $3,000, and the common areas are roomy enough for folks to gather if they want to chat or take part in activities that they put on to help residents stay active, meet others, or keep their minds busy, and there's also outdoor gardens for those who like being outside. Residents can get housekeeping help, laundry, and transportation for doctor visits, and if someone needs insulin shots or special diabetic care, the staff knows how to do that too, which is helpful for families looking for a place that can manage those things in one spot. There's a visiting nurse and podiatrist, and a doctor on call, so healthcare's steady and a little more convenient. Shared rooms, semi-private options, and more private studios let folks pick what works for their needs and budget, and you can pay by cash or check. They make meals with good ingredients and try to consider dietary needs, and pets like dogs or cats might be allowed, depending on the circumstances. The staff can handle transfers with one or two people or a lift, so folks who have trouble moving can get help with dignity, and incontinence care is on hand, from reminders to full support, with the aim always being to help everyone stay comfortable and safe. Upton's Country Comfort says it respects the rights, dignity, and choices of residents and pays attention to the small things, and while there's no claim that every detail will be perfect, the team puts care and attention into making it a home where folks can have some independence, support, and respect as they go about their days. The facility's state license number is 474700, and being locally owned, it carries a neighborhood feel that works for some people looking for a simpler, supportive setting in their later years.
