    Beautiful community but staffing concerns

I've been involved with this community for years and love the beautiful, well-kept grounds, updated apartments, restaurant-quality food, and many caring, professional staff. Management is often responsive and the memory/assisted options are reassuring. That said, staffing is inconsistent (evening/front desk gaps), communication and billing/medication problems have occurred, and there are troubling reports of bed bugs and missed fall notifications. Overall I'd recommend it for the setting and many compassionate caregivers-just verify staffing, safety and billing before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive on environment, amenities, and many aspects of care, while several recurring and serious concerns appear repeatedly and should not be overlooked. A large number of reviewers praise Fair Oaks Senior Living for its compassionate staff, high-quality clinical care, attractive grounds, and restaurant-quality dining. Multiple families describe the facility as clean, well-maintained, and hotel-like, with updated apartments and a variety of amenities (gym, salon, chapel, craft center, computer center). The culinary program receives high marks from many reviewers, with specific praise for a pristine kitchen, a strong culinary team, and made-to-order breakfasts. The community’s not-for-profit status, transparent pricing for many residents, 24/7 monitored cameras, and the ability to progress from independent to memory care within the same campus are described as clear strengths. Numerous reviewers report an overall family-like culture, attentive admissions and move-in support, and seamless transitions for new residents. Many individual staff members and departments (housekeeping, maintenance, security, nursing) are singled out as professional, accommodating, and caring, and several families give strong personal recommendations and long-term positive histories with the community.

However, the reviews also contain a consistent set of safety, operational, and communication concerns that recur often enough to be significant. The most serious issues reported include medication mishandling (medications not administered per doctors’ directions), alleged medication overcharging, and troubling billing issues connected to an in-house doctor—some reviewers explicitly raised concerns about potential medical billing fraud. There are multiple accounts of bloodwork results not being forwarded to outside physicians. Emergency response reliability is an important theme: several reviewers describe calls for help going unanswered for long periods (from ten minutes up to hours), understaffing at certain times (notably evenings and on particular floors), and unstaffed or unresponsive front desk/security desks that hampered emergency response. These operational failures have been tied to incidents of resident falls and delayed notification of families about ER visits. Together, these items point to variability in clinical and safety performance that could materially affect resident well-being.

Cleanliness and pest control comments are notably mixed. While numerous reviewers call the facility "extremely clean" and praise meticulous maintenance and housekeeping, a separate cluster of reviews reports bed bug sightings, past extermination, and allegations that management did not adequately address the issue. These contradictory accounts suggest that cleanliness and pest control may be inconsistent over time or by building/wing, and some families express strong distrust when such issues were encountered. Similarly, food and dining receive polarized feedback: many describe restaurant-quality food and an excellent dining experience, but others report meals being unhealthy (high in fat, salt, sugar), too spicy for elderly palates, or suffer from language barriers among dining staff.

Communication and management responsiveness form another important theme. Numerous families commend admissions staff, tours, and proactive updates from management, and multiple testimonials highlight good family communication and quick problem resolution. At the same time, a substantial number of reviewers describe poor communication, unresponsive front desk staff, and administrators who did not adequately address complaints. Some reviewers also report a perceived decline after management changes, suggesting that recent leadership/staff turnover may have impacted consistency. Staffing consistency is a recurrent operational risk: while many staff are described as wonderful and attentive, other reviews emphasize overworked aides, understaffed shifts, and inconsistent caregiver quality.

In summary, Fair Oaks Senior Living presents as a well-appointed, amenity-rich community with many strengths: compassionate caregivers, strong culinary and maintenance teams, clear advantages of not-for-profit ownership, and a campus that many families wholeheartedly recommend. At the same time, there are repeated, specific concerns around medication management and billing, emergency response and staffing levels, pest control allegations, and inconsistent communication from administration. These negative themes are fewer in number than the positive testimonials but are significant in severity—particularly medication errors, billing irregularities, and delayed responses to calls for help. Prospective residents and families should weigh the consistently praised environmental and programmatic features against the documented operational risks. When evaluating Fair Oaks, it would be prudent to ask targeted questions about medication administration and billing practices, staffing ratios and emergency protocols (especially at night and on specific floors), pest control history and current procedures, and how the community documents and resolves family complaints, to confirm whether the positive practices described by many reviewers are reliably applied to a specific unit or timeframe.

    About Fair Oaks Senior Living

Fair Oaks Senior Living sits right along West Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh and has been running for over 125 years, which is a long stretch in one spot. The place is a non-profit, so the focus stays on care instead of turning a profit, and the staff here keep an eye on details, making sure folks are safe and comfortable. The building rises six stories, with 80 private or semi-private apartments-studio and one or two-bedroom suites-with kitchenettes, air conditioning, and expanded cable, and the monthly fee covers everything, so there aren't any hidden charges or add-ons each month. Residents get three home-cooked daily meals made by professional chefs and bakers in a bright dining hall, and there's the Lazy Lemon Lounge where people watch TV, socialize, or use computers. Outside, the grounds stretch over 17 or 18 acres, all kept neat and green, and there's a walking track in the Gazebo park so folks can stay active or just enjoy the fresh air.

The place does a good job keeping that homey, family feel, and there's a chapel for church services, a country store, a beauty shop, and regular social activities like bingo, exercise, crafts, and parties. There's a private therapy room and leased space for speech, physical, and occupational therapists if needed, and a nurse is on-site weekdays and always on call, with licensed medical staff, including nurses and nursing aides, available along with a physician who visits. Residents who need help with bathing, dressing, grooming, or medication find care here, and those with Alzheimer's or other memory issues have specialized care too, especially in semi-private rooms that need additional attention. Security stays tight with 24-hour cameras, management, and an emergency call system.

Housekeeping and laundry services, along with scheduled transportation, make it easier for folks to manage daily life, and the grounds are open to walking, with plenty of space and benches. Guests can park easily, and residents who drive can have their cars on-site. The community lets people bring small pets, which many like for companionship. With space for independent and assisted living, along with Personal Care and Memory Care services, Fair Oaks really covers a wide set of needs while holding to its original mission of compassionate, faith-inspired care. The reviews speak well, with a 4.8 rating from the public, mentioning the staff's careful and respectful attention. Overall, the community stands out for its honest pricing, strong support, and a lived-in, comfortable setting for seniors who want a mix of independence, help, and a steady schedule.
