    Clean facility, caring staff, unsafe

I wanted to love this clean, well-organized facility - the 24/7 caregivers and kitchen staff (Heather and Lori) were kind and hardworking and gave me peace of mind at first. But I felt unsafe: rude staff, disrespectful and uncivil management, poor onboarding, and management inaction on abuse concerns and false accusations undermined trust. Mixed experience - great basic care and cleanliness, but toxic leadership and safety issues keep me from recommending it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is markedly mixed and polarized. Multiple reviewers praise the day-to-day care, cleanliness, and some individual staff members, while an equally strong current of criticism targets management behavior, workplace culture, and safety or abuse concerns. The reviews suggest two distinct experiences: a positive experience tied to frontline caregivers, food service, and facility upkeep, and a negative experience tied to supervisory staff, onboarding processes, and alleged mishandling of serious incidents.

Care quality and resident experience: Several reviewers explicitly state that residents are "well taken care of," with 24/7 care and a sense of "peace of mind" for families. Positive comments about dinners and activities like "singing along" indicate that some social and dining aspects are meaningful and enjoyed by residents. However, other reviewers describe the environment as "not a good environment for residents," and mention that residents are not prioritized, which suggests inconsistency in care quality or differences in individual experiences.

Staff and administration: The reviews contain a clear split in perceptions of staff. Many frontline staff are described as "kind" and kitchen staff as "hardworking," and administration is called "helpful" and "well organized" in some accounts; specific staff members Heather and Lori receive positive mentions. These positive notes indicate that certain employees and teams perform well and contribute to resident satisfaction. Conversely, other reviews describe "rude staff," poor onboarding and adaptation periods for new hires, and a "toxic work environment," pointing to staff morale and conduct problems that can negatively affect care continuity.

Facilities, dining, and activities: The facility itself is repeatedly noted as "organized and clean," which is a strong operational positive. Dining receives favorable mentions ("dinner") and activities such as singing along are highlighted as enjoyable for residents. These elements contribute to the positive experiences reported and appear to be consistent strengths.

Management, culture, and safety concerns: The most serious and repeated negatives center on management and safety. Reviews allege "disrespectful management," include reports of a manager "cussing/uncivil behavior," and cite "false accusations" and "management inaction". There are also explicit "abuse concerns" and descriptions of an "unsafe environment." Family members report feeling disrespected. Together, these reports suggest systemic leadership and accountability issues that may undermine trust and safety. The presence of both alleged abuse concerns and accusations of managerial inaction is particularly notable and warrants careful attention by prospective residents, families, and regulators.

Patterns and implications: The review set paints a picture of a facility with tangible operational strengths—cleanliness, dedicated kitchen and frontline staff, organized administration in some reports, and engaging activities—but also serious leadership and culture weaknesses. The most frequent and consequential themes are management misconduct (including uncivil language), inconsistent prioritization of residents, onboarding problems that may affect staff performance, and allegations of abuse or unsafe conditions. The reviews indicate that positive resident experiences often coexist with institutional issues that could affect long-term safety and staff retention.

For prospective residents and families, the reviews suggest verifying current leadership practices, asking for clarification about incident reporting and response procedures, meeting both frontline caregivers and management, and asking whether named positive staff (e.g., Heather, Lori) are still employed. For regulators or decision-makers, the recurring references to abuse concerns, management inaction, and a toxic workplace culture are red flags that merit follow-up. For the facility, the clearest opportunities are to address leadership behavior, strengthen onboarding and staff support, improve transparency around incident handling, and build on existing strengths in cleanliness, dining, and resident activities to restore trust.

    About Hearthstone Retirement Home

Hearthstone Retirement Home sits in a quiet residential neighborhood of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and it's a medium-sized senior living community with 30 beds that offers a mix of housing, care, and supportive services designed for seniors who want to keep their independence as long as they can, even though sometimes help's needed with things like bathing, dressing, or managing medicines, and there's always a registered nurse available to keep an eye on medications and health concerns, especially for residents dealing with diabetes, wound care, or other health needs while the staff handles daily tasks and provides 24-hour supervision and an emergency call system for safety. Residents can choose cozy studio rooms and spend time in indoor common areas, an arts room, or the community garden, and there are outdoor spaces like walking paths and places to sit when the weather's nice. The home provides all-day, restaurant-style dining in a shared dining room, and kitchen staff make nutritious meals using good ingredients while offering options for special diets like diabetic or allergy-sensitive needs. The staff keeps everyone engaged with community activities both on and off site, including resident-run programs, outings, and exercise classes, plus move-in help and housecleaning, dry cleaning, and laundry services, so residents have a little extra freedom to enjoy hobbies or join social programs. Hearthstone Retirement Home can arrange added care from outside services if residents have changing needs, and memory care services help those with dementia or memory trouble. For those needing in-home care, they have dedicated support, and their license as a personal care home comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. They ask for a medical evaluation from a family doctor as part of the move-in application, and families find comfort in knowing the home has a high community rating of 9.8 out of 10 in Waynesboro. The location puts residents close to churches, shops, hair stylists, and the town library, with access to arts, cultural events, and help from local agencies and business programs, as the home works closely with groups like the Small Business Development Center and various economic development resources, showing a strong connection to Waynesboro and the surrounding community.
