    Caring staff, but safety concerns

I moved my mom here and overall it's a beautiful, activity-filled community with many genuinely caring, hardworking staff and aides who made her feel at home. That said, food and kitchen cleanliness have been inconsistent (quality declined after staff changes, crumbs/sticky floors, reports of roaches), weekly cleaning is poor, and I've had medication-safety concerns (missing pills, delayed meds). Staff are often friendly and go above and beyond, but I noticed occasional unprofessional attitudes, management turnover, and repeated rate increases. I'd recommend a tour-ask pointed questions about medication tracking, housekeeping, and staff stability before deciding.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Collier Park are strongly mixed but lean positive in many respects. The facility is frequently praised for its welcoming, family-like culture, a wide breadth of activities, substantial amenities, and many staff members who are described as caring, attentive, and hardworking. Multiple reviewers celebrate the active social life—exercise classes, bingo, live music, outings, and day trips are recurring strengths—and many residents report that the community has meaningfully improved their social and cognitive engagement. Collier Park is also appreciated for its variety of apartment sizes, bright and spacious units, accessible features (elevators, walk-in closets, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms), on-site conveniences (salon, pool, physical therapy room), and a generally well-maintained campus and grounds.

Care quality and staff: A dominant positive theme is the quality and compassion of many front-line staff members. Numerous reviews name individual aides and staff as outstanding and praise staff members who go above and beyond, especially in transitions and events. Families repeatedly note thoughtful staff communication, good family involvement, and examples of staff assisting residents after hospital stays. However, there is a clear counter-theme: staffing instability and variability in care. Several reviews report high turnover, aides missing shifts, care plans not consistently followed, and examples of poor staff behavior (rudeness, alleged marijuana odor, and in rare but serious cases allegations of sexual harassment). Reviewers repeatedly point out that while many staff are excellent, inconsistency across shifts and departments affects overall care reliability.

Facilities and amenities: The physical plant and amenities are commonly cited strengths. Reviewers consistently praise the attractive grounds, well-kept common areas, pool, fitness spaces, Town Square/common rooms, library, hairdresser, and pet-friendly features. Renovations (carpet and dining furniture replacements) and added in-room internet were noted positively. For many residents the combination of amenities and apartment features delivers strong perceived value; reviewers specifically point to spacious one-bedroom plans and palatial units as advantages. That said, the facility’s large size is a double-edged sword—some residents appreciate the many options and scale, while others find the campus too large or potentially confusing for more memory-impaired residents.

Dining and food service: Dining at Collier Park is a major recurring topic with polarized feedback. Many reviewers enjoy restaurant-style dining, multiple meal choices, a salad bar, and generally pleasant dining experiences with attentive dining room service. Others report clear declines and inconsistency: turnover in kitchen staff, inexperienced replacements, specific complaints about undercooked or overcooked items (examples include undercooked cauliflower, overcooked chicken, whole green beans, and problematic soups), lost meal orders, and delayed meal delivery. Several reviews state that meal quality was excellent at move-in but decreased after staffing and ownership changes. Operational issues such as shifted meal times, food service delays, and occasional mismatches between food photos/expectations and reality were also reported.

Activities and social life: The community’s activity program gets consistent praise. Reviewers highlight a full calendar of options—exercise classes, bingo, outings to Walmart and local stores, bus trips to casinos, themed events (luau), live music, movie nights, and worship services. Many residents credit Collier Park with restoring a sense of life, social connection, and mental/physical activity. During COVID-related restrictions some outings and activities paused, which was noted but seen as temporary. A few reviewers felt staff did not sufficiently encourage participation for some residents, indicating variability in activity engagement efforts.

Safety, medication management, and security concerns: Several serious concerns recur in multiple reviews and deserve attention. Medication safety issues are reported (delays taking meds, pills missing), prompting some families to track medical paperwork closely. There are also reports of theft from resident rooms and worries about staff having keys to rooms; a few reviewers recommended installing cameras or improving room security. While many households praised safety measures like gated entry and life-alert pendants, the medication and security incidents create important caveats and patterns of concern that potential families should investigate further.

Management, operations, and patterns over time: Many reviews indicate that the community’s performance has varied over time. The pattern described by multiple families is initial strong performance and satisfaction on move-in, followed by declines associated with ownership or staffing changes—particularly in the kitchen and some supervisory roles. Some reviewers reported slow or dismissive managerial responses and billing disputes or rate increases without corresponding service improvements. Conversely, other reviewers praised directors and management for being proactive and highly involved. This mixed managerial picture suggests variability over time and between teams or shifts.

Cleanliness and maintenance: Cleanliness of common areas and the overall campus is frequently commended; many reviewers say the community is well-kept and attractive. At the same time, there are intermittent reports of poor kitchen cleanliness (crumbs, sticky floors, and roach reports), inconsistent weekly housekeeping in some apartments, and delayed unit-level repairs (HVAC filter cleaning, TV replacement). Maintenance responsiveness is praised in many instances but not uniformly.

Limitations and practical considerations: A commonly noted limitation is the lack of a secure memory-care unit for residents who need specialized dementia care. The facility also does not accept Medicaid according to some reviews. Pricing and periodic rate increases are a source of dissatisfaction for some families. The facility’s size and the way services are delivered (shifts for dining, large campus) may not be the best fit for residents who need constant hands-on care or smaller, more intimate settings.

Overall recommendation and action items for prospective families: Collier Park offers many important strengths—an active activity program, strong amenities, spacious apartments, and many compassionate staff members—and represents good value for many residents. However, reviews show significant variability in food quality, staff turnover, medication handling, and management responsiveness. Prospective residents and families should: (1) ask explicitly about current staffing stability in dining and care departments, (2) verify medication administration policies and tracking procedures, (3) inquire about room security and access controls, (4) request recent menus and sample meal service or a meal visit, (5) tour multiple parts of the campus to assess size/fit, and (6) ask about memory-care options and any planned operational changes. Doing so will help families weigh Collier Park’s clear social and amenity advantages against the operational concerns that several reviewers have reported.
