    Caring staff but concerning issues

I've seen genuinely caring, attentive staff, a clean, home-like building, great food and therapy - residents feel like family and care often exceeds expectations. That said, I've also encountered/been told about troubling issues (understaffing, poor communication, strong odors/mold in spots, and reports of neglect/inappropriate medicating), so I'd recommend it cautiously and urge families to visit regularly and advocate for their loved ones.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the provided reviews is strongly positive, with a large majority of comments praising the staff, the atmosphere, and the quality of care at Birchwood Nursing & Rehabilitation. Multiple reviewers describe the facility as feeling like a family or home, emphasizing kindness, compassion, and attentive care. Staff are repeatedly called “amazing,” “caring,” and “going above and beyond,” and specific roles are praised including nursing, therapy, and other department staff. Several reviews highlight that residents seem happy, energetic, and well-cared-for, and some reviewers report being comforted by personal experience (staff working at the facility, family members as residents). The facility is often described as small but warm, with a community feel and personalized attention.

Care quality and staffing appear to be primary strengths according to many reviewers. Comments frequently mention attentive nursing, excellent care quality, and a strong therapy/rehabilitation team that makes the facility “great for recovery.” Many reviews say care exceeded expectations and cite staff engagement in activities and individualized attention. The facility’s leadership is also noted positively in several reviews — directors and the DON receive specific positive mentions and reviewers describe management as professional and personable.

Facility condition and cleanliness are commonly commended: numerous reviews explicitly state the building is very clean, well-kept, and pleasant-smelling. Several reviewers praise the physical environment as warm, beautiful, and home-like. Dining is another repeatedly cited positive area — phrases such as “meals-quality-great,” “food is out of this world,” and “quality food” occur multiple times. Activities and resident engagement also receive favorable mentions: reviewers note engaging programming and happy, thriving residents.

However, there are a number of serious negative reports that create a notable contrast to the overwhelmingly positive feedback. Several reviews allege neglect (including a specific description of a resident “sitting in urine and poop for 8 hours”), short-staffing, and staff who appear to be working only for a paycheck. A few reviews assert very serious concerns such as claims of patients being drugged, unresponsiveness to calls, poor communication, and unacceptable care in certain instances. Facility condition criticisms are less frequent but include strong odor, dirty areas, and one explicit mention of mold on the ceiling. These negative reports are scattered and relatively fewer in number than the positive remarks, but they are severe enough that they warrant careful attention.

Taken together, the reviews suggest a facility that, for many residents and families, delivers compassionate, high-quality care in a clean, home-like environment with strong dining and activity offerings. At the same time, there appear to be isolated but significant problems reported by some families — primarily around neglect, staffing levels, responsiveness, and very serious allegations about medication practices. The coexistence of enthusiastic praise and acute criticisms suggests variability: good experiences are common, but negative incidents — when they occur — can be serious.

For someone evaluating Birchwood Nursing & Rehabilitation, the most prudent interpretation of these reviews is that the facility has many real strengths (staff dedication, therapy/recovery services, cleanliness, food, and a family-like culture), but also some warning signs that deserve verification during a visit or follow-up discussion. Recommended due diligence based on these review patterns includes asking about current staffing levels and turnover, recent state inspection/survey results and any corrective actions, policies for handling complaints and incidents, medication administration and monitoring practices, infection control measures (especially given isolated mold/odor reports), and opportunities to observe shift changes, mealtimes, and activities in person. This balanced approach recognizes the facility’s many commendations while taking seriously the minority of reports that allege neglect or unsafe practices.

    About Birchwood Nursing & Rehabilitation

Birchwood Nursing & Rehabilitation stays open 24 hours every day, so people can always get care, no matter the day or time, and that's important for those who need help around the clock, and when you walk in, you'll see it's both a senior citizen center and a place for nursing and rehab, which means it serves those who want retirement living, assisted living, or full nursing home support, depending on what's needed. Birchwood has a special care team-nurses, therapists, dieticians, and even social workers-who work together for each person's plan, and they pay close attention to health details, whether someone needs medical help after leaving the hospital, help managing medicine, or steady support with chronic health needs. They run a Safe Transition Home Program, making sure that when someone's getting ready to go back home, they're as safe as possible, or they land in the next right place, and that's handled with thoughtful care and help from staff who know what they're doing. Birchwood features skilled nursing, wound management, enteral and parenteral care, tracheotomy and respiratory therapy, vent care, in-house dialysis, intravenous therapy, and is set up to handle post-surgical needs, restorative care, and medication management, with nurses there all day and night. Folks can get help with memory care, diabetes, stroke recovery, surgery recovery, cardiac illness, short stays, long-term care, and even hospice if that's ever needed. There are activities, religious services, beauty and barber offerings, meals and nutrition help, transportation, and daily housekeeping and laundry, so life stays comfortable. Birchwood also lines up those extra health services like dentistry, eye care, podiatry, and even telemedicine, so trips out aren't always needed. Veterans can get help through special VA services, and families can ask questions or raise concerns on the care line or through their website. The administrator runs things with a focus on caring for every person as an individual, and the place is part of the Creative Solutions in Healthcare network which means if someone needs a different kind of care, staff can help find the right spot somewhere else in that group. Whatever the need-rehab, regular care, special medical support, or just some daily help-the team at Birchwood is there, always working to keep things comfortable and safe for everyone who lives there.
