    Pristine community with compassionate care

I toured The Preston and moved my mom in - it's a beautiful, elegant, pristine community with chef-quality food, abundant activities, and a real sense of family. The front desk (Annette), nursing leadership and caregivers like TJ are compassionate, attentive and proactive; memory care is excellent and leadership is very hands-on. Residents are joyful, the building is spotless and welcoming, and I highly recommend touring it. Not perfect - we noticed occasional staffing hiccups and a few distracted caregivers - but overall the warmth, professionalism and care exceeded our expectations.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The Preston of the Park Cities earns overwhelmingly positive reviews across multiple dimensions, with repeated praise for the quality and warmth of frontline staff, engaging leadership, upscale facilities, and high-caliber dining and activities. The dominant themes across reviews are compassionate, personalized caregiving; a professional and welcoming concierge/front-desk culture; chef-driven, restaurant-style meals that are both attractive and customizable; and a rich, diverse activities program that actively engages residents and families. Many reviewers emphasize a ‘home-like’ or ‘Ritz-like’ atmosphere, noting tasteful decor, resort-like common areas, and meticulous maintenance.

Care quality and staff interaction: Reviews consistently describe attentive, loving, and competent caregivers and nurses. Staff are frequently characterized as dependable, kind, and proactive — from nursing and care partners to housekeepers, aides, and activities personnel. Many families explicitly report that staff know residents’ names, remember preferences, and go beyond expected duties (transport coordination, personalized celebrations, meal accommodations). Several staff members are singled out repeatedly by name (for example, Annette, TJ, Rhonda, Chad, Rick, Molly, Jonathan, Zach, Stephen), illustrating strong individual relationships that contribute to family confidence and resident wellbeing. Families commonly describe the atmosphere as familial and safe; staff engagement appears high and sustained.

Leadership and management: Executive and local leadership receive sustained positive mention for being approachable, hands-on, and responsive. Management is credited with effective pandemic handling, transparent communication, and active oversight that improves resident experiences. Reviewers note proactive leadership in arranging special events, coordinating move-ins, and addressing care issues. However, there are isolated comments about inconsistent empathy from some senior staff (for example insufficient condolence gestures in certain situations), indicating that while leadership is generally praised, there are occasional lapses in interpersonal responsiveness at higher levels.

Dining and food service: Dining is one of the most consistently lauded features. Multiple reviewers describe restaurant-quality, chef-inspired meals, fresh ingredients, varied and healthy menu options, and the ability to customize meals. Special events and celebrations (anniversary luncheons, cakes with inscriptions, carefully arranged private rooms) are frequently mentioned as being handled with grace and professionalism, even under pressure. A small number of operational notes appear around back-of-house capacity — some reviewers report limited kitchen staffing during weekends or busier times, which can create temporary strain, but the dining experience overall remains a standout.

Activities, community life, and amenities: The Preston offers a rich calendar of activities that attract praise for both quantity and quality. Activities include onsite programming, field trips (zoo, arboretum, movies), cultural events, dog therapy, and family-inclusion programming. Activity staff are described as creative, upbeat, and central to resident engagement. Amenities are extensive and well-maintained: patios, a garden room, pool, salon, gym, card rooms, and multiple gathering spaces which reinforce the resort-like, communal feel. Reviewers report strong social opportunities and a lively resident population.

Facilities, maintenance, and safety: The property is frequently described as beautiful, elegant, and exceptionally clean. Newer construction or recent renovations translate to minimal wear-and-tear and a high-end aesthetic. Maintenance staff receive praise for responsiveness and quick fixes. Safety features and upgrades (for example, fire alarm updates) are noted positively. A few reviewers raised physical-layout concerns — the building’s open design and some blind spots were said to present wandering/egress risks for certain residents, an important consideration for families of those prone to elopement.

Memory care and clinical concerns: Memory care receives largely positive feedback in many reviews — reviewers praise specialized staff, engagement, and daily programming for those residents. At the same time, there are a handful of strong negative reports specifically calling out the memory care floor and advising against it; that mixed opinion suggests variability in individual experiences or expectations in that unit. Clinically, reviewers applaud nursing teams in multiple mentions, but a small number of concerns around inconsistent compassion or isolated lapses in staff attentiveness were reported.

Service variability and negative outliers: While the overall tone is highly positive, several recurring negative themes should be noted. Some families report isolated staff who appeared uncaring or disengaged (including observations of caregivers on their cell phones), and a few reviewers described challenging move-in transitions despite others noting strong move-in coordination. There are mentions of staff turnover in the past, though most reviews indicate that key team members stayed and became core assets. A few serious outlier comments include allegations of discrimination and a report describing the experience as a “disaster” and “outrageous expense”; these appear to be infrequent but significant and should prompt direct inquiry when families are considering placement. Weekend kitchen staffing limitations and sporadic staffing gaps were also mentioned by multiple reviewers.

Net assessment and patterns: The dominant pattern is one of high reliability in hospitality, dining, activities, and personalized, compassionate direct care — all supported by visible and engaged leadership. Families repeatedly cite increased peace of mind, strong communication, and life-enhancing programs. The most common cautions are operational or interpersonal variability (move-in hiccups, occasional uncaring staff, kitchen staffing at peak times) and isolated negative experiences in memory care. Prospective residents and families should tour in person, ask specific questions about memory-care staffing ratios and wandering safeguards, confirm weekend dining/back-of-house staffing plans, and meet the frontline team members who will directly care for their loved one. Overall, The Preston of the Park Cities appears to be a high-quality, hospitality-focused senior living community with many standout strengths and a few operational areas worth targeted inquiry during a visit.

The Thrive Memory Care experience includes secure courtyards, multi-sensory environments with fresh flowers, music therapy, and sensory gardens. Their groundbreaking Thrive Dining (Gourmet Bites) program transforms nutritious meals into attractive, bite-sized portions that residents can enjoy independently without utensils. The Dementia Awareness Experience uses virtual simulations including impairment gloves and vision-loss glasses to help associates develop deeper empathy and understanding.

The company leads the industry in technology innovation with EngageVR, a virtual reality program using Oculus Quest headsets that enables residents to travel virtually to the pyramids of Egypt, swim with whales, or reconnect with veterans from their battalions in virtual living rooms. The 360Well wellness program integrates four key circles—mind, body, spirit, and community—to promote holistic health and independence. Through partnerships with the University of Arizona's Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute and Curana Health for value-based care delivery in Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania, Watermark continues advancing senior care research and innovation.

Following a "shrinking to grow" strategy under new leadership, Watermark focuses on operating premium communities while maintaining its founding philosophy that they are "a wellness company that happens to provide housing and services for seniors," committed to creating experiences where residents truly feel at home with purpose, possibility, and joy.
