    Clean facility, caring staff, recommended

I've been a long-term resident and I love this place - clean facility, personalized rooms, plenty of activities and good food. The staff are the best and most caring; the director and Mrs. Mendez were very helpful and I'm grateful to Erica, Stephanie and "Her Girls." I had one employee issue and a temporary bad odor/cleanliness concern, both handled promptly. I highly recommend this loving community.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is strongly positive, with multiple reviewers emphasizing the facility's caring staff, clean environment, and personalized attention to residents. The majority of comments describe Cartmell Home For Aged as a loving, family-like place where long-term residents feel well supported and families feel grateful. Several reviewers explicitly recommend the facility and express strong gratitude for staff efforts, indicating a high level of satisfaction among residents and their families.

Care quality and staff: Staff quality is the most prominent theme. Reviewers repeatedly call the staff "caring" and "the best," and several single-out individuals by name (Erica, Stephanie, and the group affectionately referenced as "Her Girls"). Allied personnel such as Mrs. Mendez are also singled out for praise. The director is described as very helpful, which suggests effective leadership and accessibility. One report mentions an employee-related issue, but it is explicitly noted as resolved; this points to responsiveness from management when problems arise rather than an ongoing personnel problem.

Facilities and cleanliness: Multiple reviewers describe the facility and rooms as clean and note the ability to personalize rooms, which contributes to a homelike atmosphere. However, there are a small number of comments raising a cleanliness concern and a reported bad odor. These negative points appear to be isolated relative to the volume of praise but are notable because they contradict the otherwise frequent mentions of cleanliness. The coexistence of "clean facility" comments and a "bad odor" note suggests that any cleanliness or odor issues may be intermittent or localized rather than facility-wide.

Dining and activities: Reviewers consistently praise the food and the availability of activities. "Good food" and "plenty of activities" are recurring positives, implying that residents have access to engaging programming and satisfactory dining options—both important elements for quality of life in senior living.

Management and responsiveness: Management and leadership receive positive mentions (helpful director), and the fact that an employee issue was resolved indicates that the facility addresses concerns when raised. The numerous expressions of gratitude and the characterization of the place as "loving" suggest that communication between staff, management, and families is effective enough to build trust.

Notable patterns and balance of opinion: The dominant pattern is overwhelmingly favorable: cleanliness, compassionate staff, personalized rooms, good food, and active programming. Positive testimonials specifically name staff members and allied personnel, which strengthens the credibility of the praise. On the negative side, the few mentions of bad odor and a cleanliness concern, plus a single employee issue (resolved), are important caveats but do not appear to represent widespread or persistent problems across the reviews. Taken together, these reviews portray Cartmell Home For Aged as a well-regarded facility with strong caregiving and resident-focused services, while suggesting occasional, likely isolated hygiene or odor issues that management seems able to address.

    About Cartmell Home For Aged

Cartmell Home For Aged sits at 2212 W Reagan St in Palestine, Texas, and has been around as a not-for-profit since 1953 after Miss Sarah E. J. Cartmell left her estate to start it, and over the years it's grown from a small 44-bed home to a place with five different neighborhoods, each having its own living areas, dining rooms, sun porches, and courtyards. The facility covers a wide range of care types, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and nursing home services, and the Windermere at Cartmell is a custom-designed part of the building offering assisted living and memory care in separate neighborhoods. Residents get choices between studio or one-bedroom rooms, and the place runs daily housekeeping and laundry, plus buffet-style meals prepared with quality ingredients, so folks have their needs met without much worry. There's a full-time licensed social worker who helps with emotional and social needs, hospice in partnership with local agencies for families seeking comfort care, and two full-time licensed beauticians working at an on-site beauty and barber shop to help keep everyone groomed. They've finished renovations recently and brought in up-to-date facilities, along with a focus on safety, using medical alert systems like those from Bay Alarm Medical, Medical Guardian, and ADT Medical Alert, and they have medication dispensers and home security for added care. The staff includes registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, certified nursing assistants, medication aides, and nutritional aides, all offering 24-hour nursing care, and there's also in-house physical, occupational, and speech therapy when people need rehab. They make a point to involve residents with senior activities and events, transportation when needed, and social, physical, mental, and emotional engagement, and the place does get steady positive feedback, with 73% of reviews at 5 stars and an 8.0 review score from 15 reviews, with many folks mentioning staff are kind, helpful, and friendly. Cartmell Home For Aged has never listed specific prices, rental policies, or details about fees and what's included for utilities, and while they mention many kinds of care, they don't break out unique service names or special amenities beyond what's standard for a senior living community. The property now stands as a nursing home facility with different room layouts, specialized care for memory issues, and personalized support, and they do keep legal protections against LGBTQ discrimination and for different sources of income under federal law. The facility isn't currently listed for sale or rent, nor do they specify building details like internet, parking, or outdoor features, but the focus remains on providing care, comfort, and support for seniors in the Palestine, Texas community, managed by Purple Door, LLC.
