    Unsafe uncaring facility avoid this

I had mixed feelings: the facility offers good programs, meals, dining, a clean layout and some caring, dedicated staff. But I also witnessed unsafe, uncaring care - cold showers, poor hygiene, call buttons removed, meds undocumented, long delays, residents left unattended (seizures for days, a dropped patient, ER/ICU visits), and rude, unprofessional staff who blame each other. A few staff were helpful, but overall I left with a very negative impression and would urge others to look elsewhere.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Regent Care Center is highly mixed and polarized. A substantial portion of reviewers praise the facility for its environment, organized services, and some compassionate staff, while another substantial portion report serious and alarming problems with direct resident care, safety, staff professionalism, and management. The volume and severity of negative reports — including alleged safety incidents, medication and documentation failures, and reports of residents being ignored or harmed — are notable and create significant concern despite the positive comments about programs and certain staff members.

Care quality and safety emerge as the most critical and divisive theme. Multiple reviewers describe poor and inconsistent clinical care: long delays in attending to residents, unattended or ignored patients, and a lack of compassion from some caregivers. There are several specific and severe allegations, including medication not being documented, a resident having seizures for two days without appropriate response, patients dropped by staff, choking hazards that reportedly led to emergency room visits and at least one ICU admission. These reports point to both procedural failures (medication documentation, monitoring) and potential lapses in clinical judgment or escalation procedures. Such accounts suggest that while some residents may receive good care, there are instances of dangerously inadequate responses that prospective families should not overlook.

Staff behavior and professionalism are another major area of contradiction. Reviews report frequent unprofessional, rude, or insincere staff interactions, staff blaming each other, and activity staff described as mean or raising their voices. At the same time, other reviewers explicitly call out caring, dedicated, and friendly employees and say that some staff are willing to help. This inconsistency suggests significant variability in staff performance and culture: some team members appear to provide compassionate, high-quality care, while others demonstrate conduct or competence issues. Reports about nurses ignoring patients and inattentive CNAs compound concerns about day-to-day resident supervision and responsiveness.

Facility, cleanliness, and personal care comments are likewise mixed. Several reviewers note a clean facility, a good layout, and well-organized dining. Dining in particular receives positive mentions for organization and food quality. Activities are another clear strength for many reviewers: crafts, games, church services, and structured programs are repeatedly praised and described as an asset that makes life more comfortable for residents and better than other nursing homes. Conversely, there are complaints about bathing practices (cold showers, use of a shower hose in ways reviewers found objectionable), dirty patients, and poor cleanliness for some residents. There are also serious process complaints such as removal of call buttons, which, if accurate, directly affect resident safety and autonomy.

Management and communication issues appear frequently in the negative reviews. Miscommunication between staff and with families is cited, along with allegations of unethical practice and concerns about management ego and staff conduct. Several reviewers explicitly urge others to go elsewhere, indicating strong dissatisfaction with leadership or complaint resolution. At the same time, some reviewers reported adequate staffing levels; however, adequate headcount does not appear to have eliminated problems with responsiveness and competence for certain residents.

Patterns and implications: the reviews indicate a polarized experience where strong programming (dining, activities, layout) and some committed staff coexist with serious and potentially dangerous lapses in clinical care, safety, and professionalism. The most concerning patterns are repeated accounts of delayed or absent responses to medical issues, medication/documentation errors, and unsafe incidents leading to ER/ICU visits. Given the severity of some reports, these are not isolated comfort complaints but issues that could have major health consequences.

For prospective residents or families considering Regent Care Center, the reviews suggest a cautious approach: verify current policies and incident histories, ask for documentation on staffing ratios and training, inquire specifically about medication administration protocols, fall and choking prevention measures, call bell policies, and how the facility handles escalations to higher-level medical care. Visiting during multiple times of day, speaking with current residents and families, reviewing inspection reports, and asking management about recent corrective actions will help assess whether the positive aspects (programs, dining, some caring staff) are consistent enough and whether the serious safety and professionalism concerns have been appropriately addressed.

    About Regent Care Center

Regent Care Center sits at 1351 Sadler Drive in San Marcos, Texas, and offers a wide range of living options for seniors, so you see everything from assisted living and independent living to continuing care in a community that covers many levels, and they've got personal care, skilled nursing, and memory care in place for folks who need them. The center operates as a for-profit partnership, and through the years, their long-term care quality grade has hovered at a B-plus, sometimes climbing up to an A or higher, but there have been some uneven stretches, with their overall historical rating settling at a B-minus and facility inspections varying from F all the way up to A, currently at an A-minus, and their latest inspection showed 4 deficiencies, which is something families might want to ask about.

At Regent Care Center, skilled nursing staff provide medical and daily living support around the clock, and both long-term and short-term stays are available, including respite care when caregivers need temporary help. The center's rehabilitation services include physical, occupational, and speech therapies, all provided in a dedicated gym, and residents with wounds or in need of IV antibiotic treatment can receive care on-site, and they've also got tracheotomy and respiratory care as well as nutritional counseling. Seniors with dementia or Alzheimer's live in secure areas where staff use memory-focused activities in settings designed to help prevent wandering and confusion, and there's specialized attention for high acuity, non-ambulatory, and incontinence care along with daily medication management. They also provide internal medicine services, with professionals like Ian Woodwick, a psychologist who offers therapy for members dealing with issues such as ADHD, depression, or grief, plus psychiatric help from folks like Sussana Howard, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and there's even access to therapists who use play therapy, EMDR, sandtray, and expressive arts approaches.

Rooms come with wheelchair-accessible showers, and the facility tries to make seniors feel at home, offering outdoor seating, typical room setups, and amenities described as "resort-style living," though what that actually means may depend on individual needs or expectations. Regent Care Center strives to keep seniors active and connected, with both on-site and off-site activities, and a schedule full of social, educational, and entertaining programs, making space for friendships and mental engagement. The homes include options for virtual tours so families can look around without coming in, and folks can pay using Medicare or Medicaid. Staff hours, both registered nurses and medical care, are tracked and reported, and you'll find all the main therapy and comfort services there, plus ancillary providers such as dietitians, dental, and podiatry care.

There are no resident or family councils, and the facility has special accommodations when needed. Regent Care Center has been part of the San Marcos community for a while and has earned a solid reputation with compassionate and individualized care by highly trained professionals, trying to make sure every resident is able to sustain as healthy and fulfilling a life as possible, no matter how long their stay might be, and although there's always room for improvement, the care and activities go a long way toward helping seniors thrive physically, mentally, and socially.
