    About Independence Village

Independence Village, a non-profit facility in Texas, has provided care and a sense of community for more than 30 years, helping adults with intellectual or physical disabilities, brain injuries, and developmental disabilities, including Down Syndrome, live as independently as possible. The facility supports up to 24 residents, ages 19 and up, and offers a home-like atmosphere with a service-first staff, fully furnished private suites, shared rooms, spacious closets, living rooms, built-in drawers, and bathrooms designed for those with physical challenges. Residents can bring small pets or welcome pet visits, and there's a large game room and entertainment area along with walking paths, gardens, and an emergency alert system for safety. Independence Village provides three home-cooked meals a day with organic options, snacks, and special dietary accommodations, all served in a welcoming dining room. Nurses, occupational and physical therapists offer medical services, medication support, and assistance with daily needs like dressing, bathing, transferring, and mobility, with staff available around the clock. The facility has a secured environment, safety alarms, smoke detectors, and a sprinkler system, especially important for those with Alzheimer's or cognitive challenges, who get their own tailored care and programs. Residents and their families can use the family outreach and education service, guest services, activity programs, and regular scheduled events like movie nights, community events, arts and crafts, and exercise sessions, as well as outings in the local area, with transportation provided for doctor appointments, shopping, and religious services. There's a salon and barber, library, reading room, internet, phones, cable TV, and air conditioning in all rooms, plus fully equipped kitchens or kitchenettes, and maintenance is included so residents don't have to worry about chores. Independence Village is licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, supports non-ambulatory residents, and runs as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and a United Way Galveston County Mainland Agency. Residents and families can turn to a long-term care ombudsman program for confidential complaint help. The community aims to help everyone stay as independent as possible while supporting their needs, whether they're living there long-term or just for respite care.
