    Clean small facility, inconsistent staff

I toured this 24-suite place for my mom who wanted a smaller, simpler option. It's clean, organized and rooms are adequate with a bathroom/shower, and some staff are caring - but shared bathrooms hurt privacy, activities are minimal, admin turnover is high, and staff behavior is inconsistent (I was even yelled at). Not enough confidence for us.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews for Free State Crestwood are mixed and indicate a facility with clear strengths but also some serious and recurring concerns. Several reviewers praise the facility for being organized, clean, and relatively small (24 suites), with bedrooms that are described as nice and adequately sized. Multiple comments highlight friendly, thorough, and caring staff and state the community is well managed. At the same time, there are a number of strongly negative reviews that allege neglect, shouting by staff, poor treatment of residents, and high administrative turnover. This split creates an inconsistent reputation: some families feel comfortable recommending the community, while others warn against it.

Staff and quality of care: Staff performance is a central, polarizing theme. Positive summaries emphasize staff members who are kind, caring, and thorough in their duties. Conversely, negative accounts report poor staff quality, neglect of residents, incidents of staff yelling at family members, and an overall lack of kindness or compassion. High administrative turnover is repeatedly mentioned in the negative reviews, which may help explain inconsistent experiences and appears to be linked to lapses in care according to reviewers. Taken together, these comments suggest that staffing and management stability are the primary drivers of the wide variance in resident experiences.

Facilities and accommodations: Physical aspects of the facility receive generally favorable comments: reviewers note that the building is organized and pretty clean, with rooms that are adequate and bedrooms described as nice. The community’s modest size (24 suites) is highlighted as a positive for those seeking a smaller, more intimate setting. However, there is an important inconsistency regarding bathrooms: at least one review states that suites include a bathroom/shower, while another review specifically raises a privacy concern about shared bathrooms. This conflicting information suggests that bathroom arrangements may vary by suite or that reviewers have different expectations; prospective families should confirm exact room layouts and bathroom access when touring.

Activities and resident life: Several reviewers point to limited activity options and a low level of programming. One specific comment notes an emphasis on bingo, which may not align with every resident’s interests (for example, a resident who prefers religious activities rather than games). Overall, complaints about low resident activity and programming indicate that the social and recreational offerings may be limited or not well-tailored to a diverse resident population.

Reputation, patterns, and notable concerns: Beyond individual incidents, a pattern emerges of inconsistent care quality and an unclear reputation—some reviewers say the community is well managed and clean, while others report serious neglect and poor treatment. Mention of "not many good reviews" and repeated remarks about high management turnover suggest systemic issues that prospective residents or families should investigate further. The presence of both very positive and very negative reviews points to variability in day-to-day operations that could depend on staffing levels, leadership stability, or the timing of visits.

Recommendations for prospective families: Given the mixed feedback, anyone considering Free State Crestwood should conduct a thorough, targeted visit. Ask about current staffing ratios and staff turnover, request recent inspection or complaint records if available, confirm whether the specific suite being offered has a private bathroom or shares facilities, and review the weekly activity calendar to ensure programming fits the prospective resident’s preferences (religious services, quiet activities, etc.). When possible, speak with current residents and family members about their experiences and observe staff–resident interactions in person. These steps will help determine whether the positive aspects (cleanliness, small size, caring staff in some cases) outweigh the serious concerns that others have reported.
