    Beautiful, welcoming community but pricey

I toured this community and felt immediately at home - beautiful, bright, well-maintained facility with first-class amenities, renovated apartments, lovely outdoor spaces and excellent dining. The staff were warm, kind and attentive; residents seemed happy and very engaged with abundant activities and signature programs. It's safe, clean and welcoming - I'd highly recommend it, though it can be pricey and doesn't include in-house nursing for higher medical needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Paul Spring Retirement Community are strongly positive in aggregate, with a dominant theme of praise for the staff, activity programming, dining, facility upkeep, and overall community atmosphere. A very large number of reviewers describe warm, attentive, compassionate staff who create a family-like environment and prioritize resident dignity and engagement. Life-enrichment programming (fitness classes, arts & crafts, outings, RUI lifelong-learning classes, and signature events) is repeatedly highlighted as a differentiator, and many reviewers specifically call out individual staff members and activity directors for exceptional work. Dining is frequently described as delicious and restaurant-style, with chef-inspired menus and special event meals earning repeated praise. The property itself — a renovated former school — is described as bright, clean, well-maintained, and attractive, with appealing outdoor grounds, walking paths, and pet-friendly features.

Care quality and staff: Many families report high-quality, professional caregiving and nursing staff, citing responsiveness, individualized attention, and peace of mind. Multiple reviews emphasize trust in the staff, excellent move-in coordination, and the positive impact of staff continuity on resident well-being. Memory care programming receives positive mention for engaging neighborhoods and thoughtful activities. However, there is a notable and serious minority of reviews reporting alarming lapses: one or more accounts describe a COVID-19 outbreak followed by perceived inadequate leadership contact and clinical follow-up; allegations include hygiene neglect (residents being left urine-soaked and infrequent bathing), meals not delivered or left inaccessible, untreated open wounds, and a tragic outcome in at least one family’s experience. These reports stand in stark contrast to the large body of praise for caregiving, indicating inconsistency in care delivery or isolated but severe incidents. Several reviews also point to inconsistent medical oversight (no full-time onsite physician for some levels of care) and occasional medication errors.

Facilities, layout, and accessibility: The building and grounds receive consistent compliments — reviewers cite bright renovated apartments, attractive common areas (theater, bistro, salon, chapel), and extensive outdoor spaces including gazebo, garden, and dog park. Renovations and brightening of the facility are frequently noted as lifting morale. That said, the community’s origin as a converted elementary school leads some reviewers to note odd layout issues: long walks to the dining room from some units, smaller-than-expected apartments, and some awkward navigation or accessibility concerns. A handful of reviewers described the building feel as institutional or dreary in parts, particularly before/while renovations were ongoing.

Dining and activities: Dining is broadly regarded as a strength — many reviewers praise menu variety, presentation, and special meals (Thanksgiving, Valentine’s, filet/lobster events), and the culinary team receives direct appreciation. The life-enrichment program is repeatedly praised as outstanding, with a wide range of classes, trips, and signature programs available to residents and even open to the public (RUI University). Fitness, social, and cultural activities are robust, and staff are recognized for their creativity and resident-centered programming. For prospective residents who want a lively calendar, this community appears to deliver strongly.

Management, communication, and trends: Reviews reflect mixed perceptions of management. Numerous accounts applaud helpful, communicative directors and a welcoming admissions process (frequent shout-outs to move-in coordinators and tour staff). Many families reported smooth transitions and strong administrative support. Conversely, some reviews express concern about recent administrative changes leading to declining food quality, perceived cost-cutting, and residents’ voices going unheard. A few reviewers described dismissive or hostile responses when raising complaints. Connectivity issues (weak WiFi or cell signal in units) are mentioned as an unresolved operational concern that management is aware of but has not fully fixed.

Patterns and risk signals: The overall picture is of a highly regarded community with exceptional programming and many devoted staff members that create a warm, active environment for residents. However, the cluster of severe negative reports — especially those alleging neglect during a COVID outbreak, failures in personal hygiene care, missed meals, untreated wounds, and an allegedly converted non-refundable deposit tied to a negative outcome — represents a significant risk signal that prospective residents and families should investigate thoroughly. These negative reports appear to be fewer in number than positive ones, but their seriousness warrants particular attention. Other recurring but less severe complaints include variability in food quality over time, occasional unfriendly staff interactions, wifi connectivity problems, and layout/accessibility trade-offs stemming from the building’s history.

What prospective families should watch for: Based on review themes, visitors should prioritize an in-person tour and ask targeted questions about recent clinical incidents and their remediation, staffing levels (especially nursing and medication administration), infection control and outbreak response, wound care and hygiene protocols, meal delivery procedures for less-mobile residents, policies on deposits and refunds, on-site medical coverage (availability of physicians and LPN/RN oversight), and plans/timelines for resolving wifi/connectivity issues. Ask to meet activity staff and see sample weekly calendars, dine in the dining room, and request references from current families. Many reviewers recommend the community highly but also imply that experience can vary by unit, staff shift, and time; doing direct due diligence on those operational points will help clarify fit and safety for a given resident.

Bottom line: Paul Spring presents as an attractive, activity-rich, well-kept retirement community with many devoted staff and signature programs that delight residents and families. For most reviewers the experience is excellent — the staff, food, activities, and environment deliver a high quality of life. Nevertheless, there are serious, specific allegations of neglect and management shortcomings in a subset of reports; these warrant careful follow-up during any prospective visit. If safety, reliable nursing oversight, and consistent meal/personal care delivery are priorities, families should obtain concrete, current information from leadership about staffing, clinical procedures, and how past concerns were addressed before making a placement decision.
