    Clean modern rooms, management concerns

I found clean, modern, well-kept rooms, spacious closets, friendly and loving staff, weekly trips and church activities - overall good value. But I also noticed areas that smelled and felt rundown, inconsistent meals/activities, and troubling management issues (safety lapses, medication/sanitation problems, and payroll/administrative dysfunction) that made me uneasy. Because of those risks, I'd only consider this as my second choice.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but includes multiple serious and recurring concerns. Many reviewers praise direct care staff as caring, loving, and friendly, and several note that parts of the facility are clean, modern, and well maintained with spacious rooms and useful amenities such as shared kitchens. There are reports of active programming for residents in some instances, including weekly field trips and church activities, and some families perceive the community as good value for the price. However, alongside these positives are numerous and potentially serious negative reports that raise questions about safety, care quality, and administration.

Care quality and safety are central areas of concern. Multiple reviewers report health care code violations, failures to deliver necessary medications, and medication errors. There are also complaints of basic sanitation failures and insufficient or improper meal provision. These issues collectively suggest systemic lapses in core clinical and custodial functions that could directly affect resident health and wellbeing. Additional safety-related comments include insufficient staffing, behavioral incidents such as resident anger outbursts, and statements implying lax access control such as anyone being able to walk in. Taken together, these reports point to real risks for vulnerable residents unless independently verified and addressed.

Staff and activities are described inconsistently. On the positive side, many reviewers single out individual caregivers and staff as compassionate and attentive, and some families report robust programming with weekly outings and religious activities. Conversely, other reviews describe lazy staff, a rude administrator, and limited activities driven by understaffing. This split suggests variability in staff performance or morale—potentially driven by turnover, inconsistent management, or payroll issues (payroll and W-2 timing problems were explicitly mentioned), which can erode staff stability and the quality of resident services.

Facility condition and amenities receive mixed feedback. Several reviewers describe clean, modern, and well-kept areas with spacious rooms and large closets. At the same time, others report bad smells, depressing or rundown spaces in need of maintenance, and an overall atmosphere that some find off-putting. The divergence in facility condition comments may indicate uneven maintenance across the property, recent deterioration in some areas, or differences in expectations among reviewers.

Dining and nutrition emerge as another mixed theme. While some reviewers feel the community is good value and have no noted problems with meals, multiple reviews claim residents were not given adequate meals or proper food for their needs. Given that nutrition and regular meal service are essential for resident health, these reports are significant and warrant direct verification during a prospective visit.

Management and administrative concerns are prominent and may underpin many of the inconsistencies. Reviews repeatedly identify serious management and ownership problems, allegations that rebranding was used to escape negative press, and a perception that management is money-focused rather than resident-focused. Reports of payroll and W-2 timing issues further suggest administrative dysfunction that could affect staff retention and morale. These themes help explain why compassionate individual staff can coexist with systemic failures in care, sanitation, medication administration, and activity provision.

In summary, the facility shows a split profile: compassionate direct care staff and attractive accommodations in parts of the community versus recurring, serious allegations about medication management, sanitation, meal provision, staffing levels, security, and management practices. The most significant red flags are medication and health code violations, sanitation and meal inadequacies, and administrative problems including payroll and possible rebranding to avoid reputation issues. Prospective residents and families should exercise caution: review recent inspection and citation records, ask about staffing ratios and medication protocols, verify meal and sanitation practices, tour the facility at different times of day, speak with current families, and confirm the facility's ownership and recent name changes before deciding.

About Healthcare Sunrise llc T/A Colonial Mannor

Healthcare Sunrise LLC T/A Colonial Mannor in Williamsburg, VA, offers seniors several types of care, including long-term care, assisted living, and post-acute care, plus something they call a Memory Care Unit that's set up especially for seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia, where the focus is on safety and allowing folks to choose their own activities in a setting that keeps them comfortable. The facility uses special terms for its care levels, like Level 1 to Level 4 Care, which helps match support to changing needs, and there are structured care plans and care teams to make sure everyone's needs get met day and night, with twelve to sixteen-hour nursing care and support whenever someone needs it.

Rooms come furnished and include private bathrooms, cable TV, kitchenettes, telephones, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and big closets, some with patios or decks, wheelchair-accessible showers, and they keep things modern and clean. There's move-in coordination so the transition isn't so hard, and folks get housekeeping and laundry, too. The dining room serves three meals a day, and there's a professional chef, so you get things like no-sugar or allergy-friendly options, and sometimes the staff calls this restaurant-style dining with international cuisine, but they also offer room service, and guests can join for meals. On-site physicians handle medical visits, and there's mobile X-ray, lab services, and on-site prescriptions available, plus medication management, diabetic care, incontinence support, high-acuity care, and help with bathing, dressing, and getting around, even non-ambulatory care.

There's an emergency alert or call system in rooms for safety, and the building itself stays open 24/7, offering both supervision and a family-type atmosphere with residents running some of their own events and having plenty of activities every day. You might find people using the fitness room, walking paths, spa, sauna, wellness room, or gathering in the game room, arts room, activity room, or the outdoor garden for community events, crafts, or music programs. The library remains stocked, and there's a movie night, plus daily group activities to keep everyone active and engaged, even organized transportation for outings and medical appointments, and there's parking, too.

The Memory Care Unit has exit controls, and it's built so folks with memory loss can safely walk around, explore, and do hands-on activities, all in a place that feels almost like home. Residents use shared kitchens if they want, and everyone has the option for private or ground-floor rooms, which works well for different mobility needs. The facility uses Resident Care Technology to track care, which is meant to keep things running safely.

The staff gets described as loving and caring, and the facility has a mix of community-run and staff-led programs to keep things lively. Folks sometimes mention a family feeling because the staff and residents often eat together and take part in group activities, and there are lots of ways to get involved. Despite the nice setting and friendly environment, Healthcare Sunrise LLC T/A Colonial Mannor has had multiple code violations in the past, which included problems with meals, medication, and sanitation, and there've been ongoing management and ownership issues that sometimes affect how things run.

The facility stays affordable for many, and the location is close to public transportation, making it easier for friends and family to visit or for residents to get out for appointments. Altogether, Colonial Mannor strives to offer medical and daily care in a comfortable, social place, with both standard amenities and some unique programs, but it does have a history worth considering.
