    Caring, clean, active senior community

I've had my mom here since 2013 and I'm very pleased - the staff and administration are friendly, caring and accommodating, the place is clean, secure and a good value for Spokane. There are tons of activities and on-site amenities (pool/sauna, crafts, theater, computer lab, hair/beauty shop, dining room and coffee shop), organized outings, and food is tasty; Covid slowed things but they're coming back. Not perfect - neighborhood and some buildings show deterioration, parts still need updates and I couldn't tour a unit - but overall it's a safe, social, well-run fit.

    About Lilac Plaza Retirement Community

Lilac Plaza Retirement Community sits on the North side of Spokane at 7007 N Wiscomb St, with another location called Holman Gardens in Spokane Valley. You'll find it's a non-profit and non-denominational community, and the focus here is on affordable, income-based rent for seniors 55 and older with both one and two-bedroom apartments. The place runs through the Spokane Baptist Association Homes, who want to build safe and high-quality housing for seniors in a Christian setting while also giving folks a sense of independence and privacy. The community offers independent living for those who want to stay active, providing help with things like meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication checks, and basic personal care.

One thing people notice about Lilac Plaza is there are plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces-good gardens, walking trails, and both indoor and outdoor common areas where folks can meet up or find a quiet corner. The place allows cats and dogs, and there's resident parking plus close access to public transit. There's a beauty and barber shoppe, a wellness center, a library, a computer center, and an exercise room, so you don't have to go far for the basics. Hungry's Fine Foods, the onsite dining spot, makes meals fresh from scratch every day and is especially known for its focaccia bread. Restaurant-style dining is part of everyday life, and staff aim for quality ingredients.

There's always something going on, since there's a full schedule of events-from music, karaoke, craft activities, and weekly movies to memory and wellness classes, Bingo, and Wii bowling. Card games happen weekly and Sunday Vespers along with Bible studies are a regular thing, too. Casino outings and transportation for shopping or local attractions are part of the deal. There's a wellness coordinator and an activity director, both keeping track of the many group programs. The computer center offers classes for those interested, and exercise classes run for everyone who wants to keep moving.

Health services and support are available, especially through Valley Vista Care Corporation, which also manages other local retirement and assisted living places. Lilac Plaza helps folks manage daily tasks like meal prep, hygiene, and medication, and has a behavior program to support residents with Huntington's disease, traumatic brain injuries, or dementia disorders. The apartments come wheelchair accessible, with private showers and bathtubs, and housekeeping keeps things tidy. Meals and daily services are set up for those who need them, but folks can stay as independent as they'd like.

You'll find the community values affordable living, privacy, and giving seniors plenty of ways to stay social and healthy. The site stays open for tours and more details at spokaneretirement.org, and people say the gardens and trails are especially nice for a walk in Spokane's North side air. The focus remains on supporting the elderly of the Inland Northwest, offering homes and services designed for both safety and well-being, and it stays clear and simple, as a place to live that balances independence with the right amount of help, whenever it's needed.
