    Excellent care, clean facility, recommended

My mom stayed here and I was very impressed: excellent nursing and therapy, very clean modern facility, amazing food in a big cafeteria, lovely garden and outdoor shelter, and a large rec room with daily activities - staff generally kind, on top of things, and helped my mom become ulcer-free. A few staff were not approachable (one nurse, Becky, was rude) and the semi-private rooms have limited bed rails that felt like a fall risk. Overall I felt it was warm, like home, and I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Ohio Valley Health Care is strongly positive. Multiple reviewers highlight outstanding elements such as food quality, the therapy/rehabilitation department, and the interpersonal qualities of the caregiving staff. Several comments describe the facility as modern, very clean, and warm — giving an impression of a place that feels like home. Many reviewers explicitly recommend the facility and report good clinical outcomes for their loved ones, including prevention or healing of pressure ulcers.

Care quality and clinical outcomes are recurring strengths in the reviews. The therapy and rehabilitation services receive particular praise, with references to a great therapy department and well-equipped PT rooms. Reviewers attribute concrete clinical improvements to staff care, for example noting ulcer-free recovery and generally very good patient care. Families repeatedly say their relatives were well cared for and that staff were 'on top of things.' These comments together suggest consistent attention to clinical routines and rehabilitation plans.

Staff behavior and resident dignity are frequently lauded. Multiple summaries describe staff as kind, caring, respectful of residents' dignity, and genuinely concerned. Reviewers note that staff knew and spoke to residents, providing personal attention that contributes to a home-like atmosphere. Communication with families also appears strong in many accounts. However, there are isolated reports of negative interactions — a specific mention of a nurse being rude and unapproachable — which indicate that occasional personnel issues occur even though the overall pattern is positive.

Facilities, cleanliness, and amenities are another major theme. Reviewers highlight a large cafeteria and excellent dining as standout features; 'best dining' and 'amazing food' are repeated endorsements. The facility is described as modern and very clean. Recreational amenities include a large rec room with daily activities, organized outdoor picnics, and an outdoor shelter with a grill. A distinctive feature mentioned by several reviewers is the on-site garden producing self-grown food, which enhances the dining/amenity experience and suggests engagement with gardening activities.

Social programming and atmosphere receive strong marks. The combination of daily activities in a big rec room, outdoor events, and the garden creates a robust social environment. Reviewers emphasize that the environment feels warm and home-like rather than institutional. These social and recreational offerings likely contribute to family satisfaction and residents’ quality of life.

The primary concerns raised are safety and isolated staff behavior. One specific safety issue mentioned is limited bed rails, which some reviewers flagged as a fall-risk concern; this is an actionable safety item for management to review, as bed-rail policy and fall prevention strategies are important to resident safety. The second concern is sporadic reports of rude or unapproachable staff (one reviewer named a nurse), which contrasts with the many reports of compassionate caregiving. These negative reports appear to be exceptions rather than the rule but are notable because interpersonal issues can have a disproportionate impact on family trust.

In summary, reviews paint Ohio Valley Health Care as a well-run, modern, and clean facility with particularly strong dining and therapy services, a caring staff culture, and good recreational and outdoor amenities. Most reviewers recommend the facility and report positive clinical and personal experiences. Management should maintain strengths in therapy, dining, and resident engagement while addressing the specific safety concern about bed rails and investigating any reported instances of staff rudeness to ensure consistency in the resident and family experience.

Ohio Valley Health Care in Parkersburg has served the community since 1951 and became a skilled nursing facility in 2002, run by Michael and Brenda Miller who've owned it since 1975, and while it's won awards, what really stands out are the daily routines and simple comforts like restaurant-style dining from six in the morning until seven at night, and community activities like visits from church groups, painting classes, and even entertainment with Elvis impersonators. The facility provides skilled nursing, long-term care, short term rehab, and a full range of therapies with in-house staff offering occupational, physical, and speech therapy, and there's a focus on residents with memory care needs, dementia, rehabilitation after illness or surgery, as well as hospice and palliative care for those who need it. Meals are planned with nutrition advice, and the dining program has earned "Best Practices" honors from the West Virginia Health Care Association. The staff includes RNs, LPNs, certified nursing assistants, dietary assistants, and the facility uses electronic lifts for moving folks who need help. Residents can take part in social and recreation programs, enjoy quiet outdoor spaces like a shaded area or the raised "victory garden," and there's a large pavilion near a pond, a food smoker, a fire pit, and even a custom-built outdoor train track for a bit of fun out in the fresh air, and indoor spaces get used for family reunions or anniversaries. They try to offer a home-like setting, with support for holistic wellness, and provide transportation for outings or appointments, while dedicated staff work with each person to provide the care they need, whether it's rehab, memory care, or just help with daily routines, and they've kept up with offering modern amenities to support recovery and a good quality of life.
