    Friendly staff but serious problems

I'm generally happy with this care home - it's clean, homey, and the staff (Irene and Charlie included) were friendly, caring and attentive; food was good and my mom seemed content. The house looks a bit old and stark, staff quality was variable and activities were few. I was worried about a toothbrush mix-up; my mom got ill and was hospitalized after returning home. Also a $1,900 deposit hasn't been returned and the owners aren't answering calls or texts.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is largely positive with consistent praise for the quality of daily care, the facility's cleanliness, and the warm, home-like atmosphere. Multiple reviewers emphasize that staff are caring, friendly, and attentive; several comments single out individual caregivers (notably Irene and Charlie) as being particularly helpful, engaging, and knowledgeable. Families describe staff as accommodating and willing to guide them through procedures and care-home processes, which contributed to feelings of trust and satisfaction. Meals are described positively and at least one reviewer explicitly called the food good. Several reviewers described residents as content and said the placement was a very good or perfect fit.

Care quality appears to be a strong point for this community. Repeated mentions of caregivers being attentive, helpful, and sincere suggest consistent one-on-one attention and an ability to respond to resident needs. Reviewers report the environment is well cared-for and clean, with a fresh smell and tidy common areas. The facility is often described as home-like rather than institutional, and families appreciated that atmosphere. Staff interactions that included education for families and explanation of schedules and meals were noted as reassuring and professional.

That said, a number of concerns and inconsistent experiences appear in the reviews and should be noted. The most specific hygiene-related issue reported is a toothbrush mix-up or possible use of other residents' toothbrushes; this raises a clear infection-control and personal-care concern. Separately, one reviewer reported that their mother became ill and was hospitalized after returning home from the facility; the review does not attribute causality or provide details, but the hospitalization is a notable event in the feedback and may prompt families to ask for clarification in person.

Operational and management issues were mentioned by multiple reviewers. One serious financial complaint alleges a $1,900 deposit was never returned and that the owners refused to answer calls or texts about the matter. Multiple reviewers also mention variability among staff — while some caregivers are described as excellent and engaging, other staff are implied to be less consistent — and relatively few activities are described in the reviews, suggesting programming may be limited or unevenly communicated. Additionally, a few reviewers described the house as looking old or stark in places; this is contrasted with the otherwise clean and fresh-smelling descriptions, indicating that while cleanliness is maintained, aesthetic updates may be lacking.

In sum, the dominant themes are strong, individualized caregiving, clean and homey surroundings, and positive treatment of residents by many staff members. Counterbalancing these positives are specific and actionable concerns: toothbrush hygiene protocols, at least one serious medical incident reported after discharge, variability in staff performance and activity offerings, an older-looking facility aesthetic, and a significant complaint about an unreturned deposit coupled with unresponsive ownership. Prospective residents and families would likely benefit from verifying deposit and refund policies in writing, asking about infection-control procedures (including personal hygiene item handling), reviewing staff turnover/training and activity schedules, and discussing any recent facility updates or plans for aesthetic improvements before making arrangements.

    About The Sanctuary of Phoenix

The Sanctuary of Phoenix stands as a senior living community in Phoenix, Arizona, about 4.4 miles outside Deer Valley, that offers assisted living, independent living, skilled nursing, memory care, residential care home, and home care for older adults who need various levels of support, and they have full range of choices for studio alcove and one-bedroom apartments that come with private baths, bath tubs, and walk-in or wheelchair accessible showers, so you've got space and options to suit what you want or need, and they welcome both dogs and cats, which is good if you want your pet with you, and with staff on duty at all hours, safety and help are always close by, and there's a special area made just for people living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, with secure entryways, alarm bracelets for those at risk of wandering, and trained staff who see to safety as well as daily care, so residents who have difficult behaviors or might try to leave unsafely have the support and setup necessary to stay well, all while still part of the larger community. The place has a Tuscan village style with landscaped gardens and spacious apartments, and they focus a lot on making sure residents have both comfort and things to do-so there are both indoor and outdoor common spaces, devotionals, Christian services, and the ability to enjoy art, restaurants, and cultural events onsite or close by, so you won't be short on activities or ways to socialize, and nearby parks and health facilities mean there's plenty in the neighborhood to enjoy or use if needed, and meals are served daily, including vegetarian and kosher options, which helps accommodate most diets, and there's support with eating, incontinence, grooming, transfers, and medication management, including insulin shots and diabetes tests, which means people needing a lot of daily help can get what's required, and the staff are there for those who have complex or high needs, not just light or average support. They let you come for short-term stays if you need a break or time to recover, and anybody who needs high acuity care or extra supervision for things like wandering is welcome as long as staffing allows, so people with tougher needs can often stay here. There's also a beautician onsite, and pet care when residents need help with their animals, and the whole place is meant to give both support and companionship for seniors who want a safe environment with choices, like picking your own studio layout or joining a preferred activity in the gardens or inside, and every facility, whether it's the memory care building or the regular apartments, has their own focus and strengths for different kinds of residents. The My Caring Plan reviews give The Sanctuary of Phoenix an average score of 8.4, which suggests folks feel fairly content, and a separate 5-star overall rating shows a record of good service, so while every person's needs are different, this place has a reputation for dependable care and a safe, friendly setup. Amenities and activities are aimed at helping with life skills, spiritual needs, and having a little fun or culture, so seniors needing different levels of medical or personal help can find something that suits them here, and with their risk-free trial, people can try it out to see how they like it without having to decide right away. The Sanctuary of Phoenix takes care to create a social and safe atmosphere for its senior residents, so if you or someone you know is looking for a community that covers most care needs and allows for pets, social events, custom meals, and a bit of style, this is a place that manages all of those without much fuss.
