    Beautiful community but inconsistent, expensive

I placed my mom here and overall it's a beautiful, well-maintained community with excellent meals, lots of activities, strong rehab and memory-care programs, and many genuinely caring, compassionate staff who made us feel like family. 24-hour care, therapy services, salon/bistro amenities and an inviting layout were real pluses. However, it's expensive, has extra fees (pool membership, refundable waiting-list deposit), and staffing/management are inconsistent - we experienced poor nursing coverage, an instance of theft and dishonest STNAs, and an unresponsive, rude manager. If you can afford it and vet the team carefully, it can be wonderful; otherwise proceed with caution.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Brethren Care Village are largely positive, with many reviewers praising the facility's clean, modern environment, broad range of services, and caring staff. Numerous comments describe the campus as immaculate and newly renovated, with a beautiful dining room, scenic outdoor patios, a new wellness center, and a lively community atmosphere. The facility is frequently described as home-like and secure, and many families report peace of mind, strong relationships between staff and residents, and long-term satisfaction.

Care quality and staff: A dominant theme is the compassion and professionalism of the caregiving staff. Multiple reviews specifically applaud attentive, patient, and loving caregivers, strong dementia and memory-care programs, hospice support, and round-the-clock care and emergency response. Rehab services and short-term rehab stays receive positive notes, with therapy and rehab staff described as helpful in many accounts. That said, reviews are not uniformly positive about staffing: a small but significant number of reviewers reported problems in specific departments (notably the nursing home area), inconsistencies between staff members, a reported theft incident, and isolated cases where STNA staff allegedly lied about care tasks. There are also reports of a manager being rude and at least one review alleging racism, so prospective families should probe staff culture and complaint resolution practices during a tour.

Facilities and amenities: The campus amenities are repeatedly highlighted as a strength. The community offers multiple housing options (apartments, condos, individual cottages with garages and storage), private and spacious rooms, and accommodations for couples. On-site amenities include a salon/barber, a small library, a bistro, community center for events, accessible gyms across buildings, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool that can be used with a separate membership. Many reviewers note the impressive apartment selection, the glass-enclosed porches and patios, and the overall upkeep of buildings. The pool is a distinctive asset, but it is important to note it is not included in rent and requires an additional membership.

Dining and activities: Dining is another frequently praised area, with three meals available daily and many reviewers describing the food positively. The newly renovated dining room and an on-site bistro get repeated favorable mentions. Activity offerings are robust: residents have access to crafts, exercise classes, board games, weekly meetings, and community events, and many reviewers say their loved ones are active, social, and engaged. Reviewers appreciate the many opportunities for socialization and the community feel among residents.

Administration, cost, and policies: Cost and administrative policies are recurrent concerns. Several reviewers emphasize that living here is expensive and can be a financial strain; a few call it very expensive, although others feel it is worth the money. The waiting list policy requires a $2500 upfront fee, which is refundable if the applicant later chooses a different location; reviewers mention this fee explicitly. Memberships and some amenities, such as the Olympic pool, require separate fees. Administrative responsiveness is mixed in reviews: many reviewers praise helpful and informative staff and excellent tours, but others report poor responsiveness from management, unresolved issues with directors, and dissatisfaction following certain incidents. These mixed reports indicate variability in the administrative experience depending on the situation and staff involved.

Safety, memory care, and notable issues: Memory care programs are frequently described as excellent and safe, with mechanisms like ankle monitors noted as balancing freedom with security. Nevertheless, reviewers also reported specific safety and personal-belongings concerns: a reported theft of $68 and missing personal items (a photo album) were called out. There are also mentions of wandering patients and a need for families to confirm supervision and safeguarding protocols. A few reviewers reported health declines after moving in or dissatisfaction with certain clinical approaches, such as therapy that emphasized weights over balance and leg work. These mixed clinical reports suggest checking individualized care plans and therapy goals during admission discussions.

Recommendations and takeaways: In summary, Brethren Care Village is frequently recommended by families for its cleanliness, modern facilities, robust activities, strong dementia and hospice programs, and caring staff. It often provides a warm, home-like environment and broad levels of care from independent apartments and cottages to skilled nursing and memory care. However, potential residents and families should walk through specifics: ask about exact costs and what is included versus what requires extra membership or fees (pool, etc.), inquire about the waiting list policy and refund process, evaluate management responsiveness and how complaints are handled, confirm security and inventory safeguards for personal items, and review therapy and clinical care approaches for individual needs. Doing so will help balance the many positive attributes against the handful of serious concerns that appeared in the reviews.

    About Brethren Care Village

Brethren Care Village sits in Ashland, Ohio, at 2140 Center St, near places like Lutheran Village of Ashland, and it's been around since 1972 as a nonprofit. The campus stays well-kept, and folks there can walk paths, use the Wellness and Community Center, or relax on a patio garden or enclosed courtyard. It offers independent living, assisted living, long-term nursing care, memory care, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing services, so people can stay as their needs change. The buildings include different room choices-studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and semi-private. Apartments come with big features like appliances, an Emergency Response System, and parking. Residents live in a Christian-based community, and the campus has spaces for all sorts of gatherings, like The Greens Bistro & Pub, where one can get breakfast or lunch, a fireplace lounge, or even rent spaces for big family events.

People who stay here get meals provided, including special diets with low-sugar or low-sodium options, and guest meals for visitors. There's restaurant-style dining and private dining rooms, and services like housekeeping and grocery shopping make things easier. Other amenities add comfort, like a library, TV lounge, billiards, beauty salon, butterfly garden, raised beds for gardening, and common rooms with fireplaces. There are indoor and outdoor areas set up for family visits or just enjoying nature.

Brethren Care Village handles different levels of care, covering independent folks, those needing daily help, and people with health needs like diabetes, who get help with insulin and blood sugar checks. Nurses and caregivers are on-duty around the clock. The staff helps with moving between bed and wheelchair, bathing, grooming, and other care needs, and there's support for people who manage incontinence by themselves. Residents with memory loss, such as Alzheimer's or dementia, get care in a secure memory care area designed to keep them safe, with bracelets and technology to prevent wandering. Staff trained in Montessori methods and behavioral care help residents stay engaged and safe, even if they face challenges with behavior or mobility. Memory care and all care plans get updated as residents' needs change, and there's a dedicated LPN, April Keener, who's worked on the campus for 24 years.

There are always activities, events, worship services, and clubs going on, from art and stretching to games like Wii bowling and trivia. Devotional and Protestant services run onsite with chaplain visits, so residents who want spiritual support can find it easily. The calendar of outings, educational lectures, intergenerational programs, and fun makes it easy for folks to stay active and meet others. A full-time activity director and companion care programs help keep everyone involved. Residents can also use transportation services, both free and at-cost, to get around, and the staff can help with arranging trips.

Paying for care works in different ways at Brethren Care Village. Families can use private pay, Social Security, and even veterans' benefits. Charges are sorted by things like community fees, respite care, buy-in, and care levels (high, medium, or low), with separate rates if a second person moves in. Costs change depending on which part of the community and how much help a resident needs.

Amenities and features have been set up to help people age in place, stay around friendly faces, and take part however much they're able. The focus remains on giving as much independence, stability, and comfort as possible, whether someone lives in Bay Laurel's independent apartments, needs help in Belmont Tower assisted living, or has moved to the Health Care Center for skilled nursing or memory care. Staff stay available day and night, and care plans get made for the mind, body, and spirit, so people can keep living their lives as well as possible.
