    Beautiful campus attentive staff concerns

I live here and mostly love it - beautiful, very clean campus with cottages and apartments, balconies/patios, excellent activities and amenities, and flexible care from independent living through hospice. Staff are generally friendly, helpful and attentive, though it's expensive and I've seen troubling lapses (medication given without clear consent, inattentive nursing) and some noise/safety/common-area issues. Overall a wonderful, well-run place, but tour carefully before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive with repeated praise for the facility’s physical environment, broad continuum of care, robust activities, and generally attentive and friendly staff. Many reviewers describe Homewood Living Martinsburg as a top-notch, new, and well-kept community with a beautiful campus, clean cottages and apartments, and thoughtful design features such as private balconies or patios for residents and easy outdoor access. The community offers a wide array of amenities (bank, country store, salon, pool, fitness equipment) and full clinical services on-site, including rehab, nursing, assisted living, and an Alzheimer’s unit, which reviewers consistently identify as strengths that support long-term and transitional care needs.

Staff and care quality are among the most frequently mentioned positives. Multiple reviewers highlight courteous, upbeat, knowledgeable, and helpful staff, prompt nursing response, an accommodating front desk, and staff who support resident independence through housekeeping and flexible assistance (including no forced meals). Families report peace of mind from the availability of nursing stations and services that span independent living to hospice. Activities programming receives strong praise: reviewers note an active calendar with crafts, tours, shopping trips, concerts, outings, and an engaging activities director who creates opportunities for socialization and meaningful engagement.

Dining and hospitality earn mixed but generally favorable comments. Several reviewers call the on-site restaurant and café exceptional, cite varied menus, meal delivery options, and a pleasant dining room. Others, however, say the meals are sub-par for the price or that pricing in general is expensive. This split suggests that while the dining infrastructure and variety are solid, perceived value and consistency of food quality vary by reviewer expectations or by specific dining experiences.

Despite the many positives, there are clear and important concerns that prospective residents and families should evaluate. A minority of reviews report serious lapses in staff behavior and clinical practice, including an allegation of a nurse avoiding care, watching television while on duty, and covert administration of Benadryl — claims confirmed by another staff member in that report. These are isolated but severe accusations that contrast sharply with many other reviewers who describe top-notch staff. This indicates variability in staff performance or isolated incidents rather than a unanimous pattern, but the severity warrants careful questioning about staffing oversight, medication administration policies, and incident reporting during a tour or family meeting.

Other recurring negatives relate to cost and environment. Multiple reviewers mention that the community is expensive, and some feel the common areas or overall atmosphere could be improved. There are complaints about excessive beeping or noise in congregate spaces and notes that architectural or environmental factors might contribute to safety concerns, including falls. Room size variability is also mentioned — some units are praised as spacious cottages with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, while other rooms are described as small. These observations suggest that prospective residents should verify unit layouts, fall-prevention measures, noise levels, and common-area conditions in person.

In summary, Homewood Living Martinsburg presents as a well-appointed, professionally run senior living community with comprehensive services, attractive grounds, many amenities, and a lively activity program. The prevailing tone of reviews is positive—residents and families commonly feel at home and well cared for. However, there are notable caveats: inconsistent experiences with staff in a few reports (including serious allegations), concerns about cost/value particularly for dining, some environmental/noise and safety issues, and variation in room sizes and common-area atmosphere. Prospective residents should tour multiple unit types, ask for details on staffing ratios and training, request documentation of clinical and medication protocols, inquire about fall-prevention strategies and noise mitigation, and sample the dining options to assess value and consistency before making a decision.

    About Homewood Living Martinsburg

Homewood Living Martinsburg has been serving older adults for over 90 years, offering a range of care and housing from independent living cottages and apartments to assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and even hospice and respite services, so folks can move between levels of care without having to leave the community, and while there's not a lot of detailed information available about the facility itself, one will see spacious options for living, from two-bedroom cottages with handicap-accessible bathrooms to apartments with private baths, Wi-Fi, cable TV, patios or balconies, and typical home appliances-there's a real focus on helping residents stay comfortable and as independent as possible with help always nearby thanks to a 24-hour emergency call system, on-site health support, and transportation options, which is important because there have been deficiencies noted for care planning and ensuring services meet professional standards, plus infection control issues found in inspection reports, so it's something that stays on one's mind.

Some staff like Buffy Bradley and Robin Stern have been managing the place since 2025 and 2019, and although there's a helpful, joyful, and kind atmosphere and staff are often praised for creating a welcoming place with high-quality activities, the nurse turnover rate sits at 24.6% in a year, with an average of 4.33 nurse hours per resident per day, which paints a picture of the care environment. Residents take part in fitness programs, movie nights, music events, and enjoy the indoor pool, spa, arts room, garden, bocce and shuffleboard courts, library, walking trails, game room, club house, and cafe, and there's even a unique dry cleaning drop-off, which isn't seen much in other places nearby, and outdoor areas like a lawn, picnic area, gazebo, and water feature add to the country-living feel, especially at Spring House.

Homewood Living Martinsburg is run by a non-profit corporation and has 129 certified beds, offers rehab and long-term skilled nursing, independent lifestyle apartments, and a continuing care retirement community model, so people aged 65 and up can plan for their future all in one place, and since it's maintenance-free living, residents don't have to worry so much about appliances or home repairs, plus, they get amenities like a business center, fitness center, bicycle storage, salon, conference room, and lounge, and the security features-controlled access and night patrol-help people feel a bit safer. Small and large dogs, as well as cats, are allowed, and there are long lease options, which means people can really settle in, and for those who need it, there are caregivers and 24-hour supervision, medication management, support with bathing and dressing, and special attention for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, including secure memory care to keep folks from wandering and getting lost, and meals aim to be nutritious, focusing on good quality ingredients and balanced nutrition.

Communities like this connect families to local senior care advisors for help and guidance, but it's important to note that in recent reports, managers and staff have faced inspection citations for things like not developing complete care plans on time and issues in infection protection, so families should weigh the friendly, active feel of the place alongside those documented concerns when considering Homewood Living Martinsburg.
