    Great dementia care, some issues

I placed a relative here and the building is clean with nice rooms, great food, church services, and activities. The Dementia/Alzheimer's unit is the best in central VA - low turnover, dedicated hard-working staff, on-staff psychologist/psychiatrist, and a smooth transition - they also accept TBI clients and don't tolerate smoking. My concerns: disorganized operations, strict management (Ms. Edna), parking/maintenance and a temperamental elevator need fixing, and I witnessed worrying resident behavior; I'd recommend for dementia care but wish supervision, location and facilities were better.

    About Madison Home

Madison Home in Richmond, WA provides different living and care options for seniors, so you'll find independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, home care, respite care, and even adult day care, and the community's big enough to allow for plenty of choices but small enough at 93 residents to feel personal. Seniors can live in furnished rooms with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning, and the building includes features to help those who need help getting around, like ramps and wide hallways, and residents can bring pets but should ask staff about the pet rules because they have a policy in place for that. There's a focus on safety and comfort, so every room's bright, clean, and well-lit, and there's a secured section for people with memory problems such as Alzheimer's, with a badge and code system to help prevent wandering or confusion. Staff help with daily needs like bathing, dressing, medication management, transfers, and they check on residents at all hours with a 24-hour call system and supervision, plus the nursing staff works 12 to 16 hour shifts to keep an eye on health needs. The facility has a dining room where chefs prepare meals for different diets, including special accommodations for people with diabetes or food allergies, and meals use quality ingredients with a focus on nutrition. Madison Home includes common areas like a fitness room, beauty salon, game room, small library, computer center, and outdoor gardens for residents who want to walk, garden, or join activities, and people have plenty of choices with planned outings, resident-run events, devotional services, and community-sponsored programs every day. Transportation's available for doctor's appointments and non-medical trips, and staff handle housekeeping, linen services, and help with move-ins so things go smoothly. There's a wellness center, fitness classes, and a mental wellness program, plus psychologists and psychiatrists to help with mental health and memory care. While independent seniors can enjoy resort-style living and a maintenance-free lifestyle, there are also care homes in residential neighborhoods for people who want a smaller setting, and board and care homes with more daily support, so families can pick from names like Brookdale Midlothian, Brookdale West End Richmond, Heartfields at Richmond, St. Francis Home, and several others, depending on care level and preference for smaller or bigger homes. The team at Madison Home focuses on letting people age in place, so as a resident grows older or their needs change, they can move between care levels while staying in the same community, and there's always staff available to help with everything from wound care to rehabilitation or round-the-clock nursing if it's needed. Seniors can bring their pets, stay connected with Wi-Fi, watch cable TV in their rooms, and join planned day trips or movie nights if they want, making it a place where people can get the care they need but still enjoy life and connect with others around them.
