    Caring staff and excellent food

My mom loved living here - the staff were kind, attentive, and genuinely caring. The food is excellent (many choices, talented chef) and dining is enjoyable. It's a warm, active community with lots of activities, good transportation, and strong value for the price. Caveats: the building is older and there are occasional understaffing, maintenance, and cleaning hiccups, so verify higher-level care needs - but overall I would recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across reviews of Colonial Village is predominantly positive, with frequent praise for staff, dining, social life, and the sense of community. The most consistent strengths noted are the courteous, helpful and often extraordinary efforts of staff members—from front-line dining servers and housekeeping to management and sales personnel. Many residents and family members describe the dining experience as a highlight: an attentive chef and dining staff, well-presented and generous meals served three times daily, and personalized touches such as staff asking about preferences and celebrating birthdays. The community atmosphere is repeatedly described as warm and family-like, with residents making new friends, participating in many activities, and looking out for one another.

Activities and social programming are a major positive theme. Reviews list a wide variety of daily and weekly offerings—bingo, arts & crafts, exercise classes, movies and theater nights, parties, outings to Walmart/malls/restaurants, and special entertainers like magicians. An engaged activities director and a full schedule contribute to strong social engagement and leisure opportunities, which residents frequently cite as a reason they enjoy living there. Transportation services are also valued: scheduled buses for medical appointments and shopping (noted Tue–Thu in some reviews) are used and appreciated.

Facilities and amenities are generally well-regarded. Many reviewers report a clean facility, well-kept grounds and gardens, on-site conveniences such as a beauty shop and library/theater, laundry rooms on each floor, and apartments equipped with full kitchens and appliances. Pet-friendly policies, including access to a dog park and no extra charge for pets, are repeatedly praised. Security features and a sense of safety are called out as important benefits by several residents and families.

Despite the strong positives, several recurring concerns appear across reviews and temper the overall picture. A key structural limitation is that Colonial Village is an independent living community and does not provide on-site nursing or assisted living care; some families felt misled or later needed a higher level of care and had to move their loved ones. Building age and cosmetic issues are mentioned frequently—outdated decor, popcorn ceilings, narrow hallways, and small rooms in older sections—which some prospective residents find off-putting. Related maintenance and housekeeping inconsistencies are a common theme: while many reviewers describe prompt maintenance and good housekeeping, others report missed cleanings (especially on one floor), infrequent linen changes, lack of supplies (toilet paper), and unresolved issues such as mold, carpet problems, or promised repairs that were not completed.

Staffing levels emerge as the most important operational concern. Multiple reviewers describe the staff as caring and hardworking but overextended; staffing shortages have reportedly led to service issues such as lunches or dinners being served cold, reduced housekeeping consistency, and staff performing multiple roles. These constraints sometimes produce uneven experiences—some residents report impeccable food service and attentive staff, while others experienced service lapses. There are isolated reports of resident-to-resident harassment and situations where staff response was inadequate, highlighting that interpersonal dynamics and enforcement of community rules can be areas needing attention.

Management and transparency receive mixed marks. Many reviews applaud managers and the sales team for being welcoming, helpful and going above and beyond—smooth tours, accommodating moves, and personal outreach from the chef were singled out. Yet a minority of reviews recount feeling misled about the facility's ability to accommodate higher-level care needs or describe management as deceptive in specific cases. Move-in logistics were positive for many but included at least one report of a lengthy move-in delay and unexpected costs.

Value perception is generally favorable: numerous reviewers call Colonial Village a good or best value for the money given the range of meals, activities, transportation, and community support. A few residents consider it pricey or question long-term value, especially when coupled with the need for cosmetic upgrades or if a higher level of care becomes necessary. Overall, the dominant pattern is that Colonial Village provides a welcoming, active independent living environment with strong dining and social programming and a caring staff, but prospective residents should be aware of the community’s limits regarding clinical care, the mixed condition of older facilities, and occasional operational strains related to staffing and maintenance. These trade-offs are important to weigh when deciding if Colonial Village fits a particular resident’s current and potential future needs.

    About Colonial Village

Colonial Village sits in rural North Longview among the East Texas Piney Woods, offering a residential setting that's both quiet and has a small-town feel with modern comfort, and folks can pick from different apartment types-studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom layouts-like the American Elm, Bradford Pear, Cedar Elm, Eastern Redbud, Persimmon, Sugarberry, Water Oak, Sweetgum, and Cherry Laurel floor plans, each with their own touches like kitchenettes, private bathrooms, walk-in closets, balconies or patios, and plenty of natural light, with unfurnished options if you want to bring your own things, and there's also cable, Wi-Fi, and resident parking. The place has a cozy library, lounge, arts and crafts room, fitness center, game room, chapel, movie theater, card and game rooms, a beauty/barber shop open Wednesdays, a dog park, an outdoor patio, walking paths, and a country store for simple shopping, plus a big dining room for restaurant-style meals, and an all-day stocked bar for snacks and drinks.

Colonial Village offers a wide range of care, from independent living for active seniors all the way to assisted living, memory care for those with dementia or Alzheimer's, and skilled nursing, so folks can get support with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, grooming, medication management, wound care, diabetic injections, IV therapy, rehab after joint replacement, physical therapy, respiratory care, and toileting if needed, and you can also arrange home health care or welcome a home care agency to suit your routine. The meals are home-cooked by the chef and served three times daily, with extra snacks, and every week there's housekeeping and linen service to help keep things tidy, while residents don't pay for most utilities except their own phone and cable TV if they want it, and laundry rooms are available.

Residents can join in painting classes, domino bingo, fitness programs, exercise classes, live music, outings to local attractions like Longview Community Theatre, museums, and Longview Mall, and there are monthly social gatherings, country store trips, and religious worship if folks wish, with scheduled bus transportation to appointments and shopping on certain days. The staff encourages resident-led activities and volunteering, and the community stays pet-friendly for those who want animal friends nearby. Colonial Village's grounds have landscaped walking paths and a courtyard, and there's a strong focus on personal wellness, social connection, and supportive care, with special programs and articles about dementia, legal and financial planning, and health and safety to help both residents and families stay informed, and even a podcast called "The Disappearing Mind" for those who prefer to listen and learn more about memory care. The community accepts VA benefits and Aid and Attendance for eligible veterans and their spouses, making long-term care more reachable for some families, and since it's a licensed facility offering skilled care and progressive levels of support, people can stay as their needs change without moving away from the familiar surroundings, which adds peace of mind. Colonial Village brings seniors the choice to live actively and comfortably with different levels of care and a variety of activities, all in a safe and neighborly environment.
