    Roomy clean home with amenities

I live in a roomy, clean one-bedroom that overlooks trees - utilities are included and it even has cooking facilities and a washer/dryer, so it truly feels like home. The staff are consistently friendly, helpful and professional, and the building offers fantastic amenities and activities (theater, library, pool/jacuzzi, workshop, crafts, water aerobics, potlucks) so there's almost always something going on. Pet-friendly, comfortable and well cared for - I'm pleased and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Affinity at South Hill elicits strongly mixed impressions. Many commenters describe attractive, modern living spaces and a broad set of common-area amenities — a theater, library, pool and jacuzzi, woodworking shop, and regular recreational offerings — that support an engaged, social environment. Several reviewers emphasize resident-led activities, potlucks, craft groups, and water/aerobic classes as ongoing strengths. In-unit features such as cooking facilities, washer/dryer hookups, utilities-included billing, and scenic views contribute to a comfortable, apartment-like experience for some residents.

Direct-care staff receive frequent praise for friendliness, professionalism, and dependability. Multiple accounts characterize staff as pleasant and helpful in routine daily support and community events. At the same time, there are consistent concerns about how management-level decisions affect daily life: several reviewers describe changes after a management transition that coincide with service reductions, canceled programming, and perceived delays in responding to resident requests. These reports point to an operational inconsistency in managerial responsiveness rather than a uniformly positive or negative pattern.

Facility maintenance and housekeeping present a mixed picture. While many communal spaces and apartments are described as clean and modern, other comments highlight maintenance lapses and supply issues (for example, unstocked equipment, missing remotes, or poorly serviced printing/IT resources) and uneven sanitation in some common areas. These accounts suggest variability in day-to-day upkeep and inventory management for shared amenities.

Clinical care and safety perceptions are an important area of divergence. Some reviewers recall strong historical care, but others describe concerns about timeliness and adequacy of emergency response and staff support during incidents. Those concerns are best understood as potential gaps in emergency protocols, escalation pathways, and staff training/availability rather than as uniform practice across the community. Families should ask about current emergency procedures, staffing levels, and response expectations during a tour.

Programming and social life are notable assets when active: resident-organized events and scheduled community activities are cited as key contributors to quality of life. However, several accounts link reduced or canceled programming to recent management changes and to the absence of a dedicated social director. Prospective residents should confirm the current activity calendar and whether there is staff support or resident leadership sustaining events.

Practical considerations include the absence of a congregate meal program (residents rely on in-unit cooking or off-site dining), some smaller unit layouts and showers-only designs in parts of the building, and access limitations from the nearby highway. Communication and feedback-handling have been flagged as problematic by some individuals, including allegations related to how negative feedback is managed; visitors should evaluate the facility’s transparency, grievance process, and responsiveness to concerns.

In sum, Affinity at South Hill offers many features sought by independent living residents — attractive amenities, active social opportunities, and generally positive frontline staff interactions — but also displays variability in management responsiveness, maintenance consistency, programming continuity, and emergency-readiness. A direct tour, targeted questions about current leadership, staffing ratios, emergency protocols, maintenance workflows, and a review of the activity schedule will help determine whether the community’s present operations align with an individual resident’s priorities.

Affinity at South Hill sits in Spokane, WA, at 3304 E 44th Ave, in the Moran Prairie neighborhood, and serves adults 55 and older who want a place to live that supports both a comfortable daily routine and an active lifestyle, so you'll find that the place has a big mix of services like independent living, assisted living, memory care, and even skilled nursing, so it can support folks with different needs, including those living with Alzheimer's or diabetes who might need help with monitoring. The staff's on-site 24 hours a day and friendly, and you'll see them helping residents with things like moving to and from wheelchairs, keeping everyone safe in emergencies, and making sure day-to-day maintenance gets done fast, plus the building's secured with controlled access. Apartments come in different floor plans, usually nicely kept, and each unit's got handy things like laundry machines, appliances, dishwashers, and options for patios or balconies, and the rent already includes electricity, water, heat, cable TV, and internet, which saves a lot of hassle.

Residents can have cats and dogs, even large ones, because the place has pet-friendly rules and a dog park where people like to chat while the dogs run, and there are lots of nice spots to sit outside, including a patio, garden, gazebo, and barbecue area where people hold events whenever the weather's nice. You'll find the meals are handled on-site so everyone eats without much trouble, and the dining areas are clean and relaxed. For hobbies and staying busy, there's a fitness club, yoga studio, indoor saltwater pool and spa, and social rooms for events, like crafts in the studio, card games in the card room, movies in the theater, or a cold drink in Dilly Dally's, which is the Irish pub that's popular for quiet afternoons.

There are always activities going-exercise groups, educational programs, billiards, workshops, and movie nights-to help folks stay healthy and connected, since people like to gather in the community rooms, the clubhouse, or the café, and the staff encourages everyone to personalize their apartments with their own furniture to make it feel like home. Affinity at South Hill is managed by Axis Commercial and Residential Realty and keeps its focus on making sure residents have a strong sense of belonging and support as they age, while the maintenance team and friendly faces always make life a bit easier, and the location means it's easy to get out for visits to local restaurants, shops, parks, and medical centers, so you see people coming and going or relaxing just as they like.
