    Lovable community, understaffed and unsafe

I loved living here - the social life, rehab/therapy programs, good food, and many caring staff brought lots of laughs and favorable outcomes. That said, the place is chronically understaffed: slow call-light responses, dining errors, medication-management and safety concerns (I was worried about taking pills), and occasional resident mishaps. The building needs maintenance (rooms at the ends are cold). New management has made some improvements, but care quality is still inconsistent. Overall I enjoyed the community but left concerned about staffing and safety.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Terrace Gardens Health Care Center is mixed, with clear strengths in clinical and rehabilitative offerings but recurring operational and safety concerns. Multiple reviewers praise structured aspects of care — nursing services, regular physician visits, nutritional planning, and a dedicated full-time physical therapy program — and describe measurable progress and favorable outcomes for certain residents. Housekeeping, daily social activities, and a generally social, laughter-filled atmosphere are mentioned positively, and several reviewers highlight individual staff and leadership (including the administrator) as professional, respectful, and attentive.

Care quality appears to be variable across reviewers and likely across shifts. On the positive side, there are consistent mentions of a well-balanced standard of care, formal rehab classes, and staff-driven progress noted by families and residents. These reviews emphasize that when staffing and clinical oversight are functioning well, residents receive thorough nursing care, beneficial therapy, and meaningful social engagement. Conversely, several reviews report significant lapses: low alertness among some staff, slow response times to call lights, and descriptions of 'horrible care' or dreadful experiences. This variability suggests inconsistency in bedside care and monitoring.

Staff behavior and staffing levels are central themes. Many reviews commend individual employees for being nice, attentive, and respectful toward residents and colleagues, and some note an atmosphere of mutual respect among staff. However, understaffing is repeatedly cited — not enough dining staff and insufficient coverage overall — and is linked to poor service (slow responses, incorrect food orders) and decreased quality of care. Some reviewers explicitly describe staff as uncaring or cite serious failures such as residents being dropped and inadequate incident response. A particularly concerning cluster of comments involves medication management and safety: reviewers flagged issues with how medications are handled and expressed fear about resident safety when taking pills.

Facility condition and safety deserve attention. Several reviewers noted the building needs maintenance, calling out cold rooms at the ends of hallways and a general need for upkeep. These environmental issues, combined with reports of understaffing and incident mismanagement (including allegations that police were not contacted after incidents), raise safety and oversight concerns. At the same time, others describe the environment as peaceful and say residents loved living there, indicating that some units or periods provide a comfortable, homelike atmosphere.

Dining, housekeeping, and activities show both strengths and weaknesses. Housekeeping and daily activities are repeatedly listed as positive elements that contribute to resident well-being and socialization. Food quality is described as good by some reviewers, and the social aspect of mealtimes is appreciated. Yet operational problems in dining services — incorrect orders and insufficient dining help — detract from the overall experience for other residents. These service-level inconsistencies often reflect the same staffing pressures mentioned elsewhere.

Management and trajectory: a subset of reviews indicates improvement under new or changed management, stating 'getting better' and praising managers. Other reviews laud the administrator specifically. This suggests there may be ongoing efforts to address problems, but the effects are not uniform across all residents or timeframes. The coexistence of commendations for leadership and reports of unresolved serious issues indicates a facility in transition: some policies and programs (therapy, nutrition, activities) are functioning well, while operational execution (staffing, incident response, medication safety, maintenance) still requires attention.

In summary, Terrace Gardens offers notable clinical and rehabilitative strengths, an active social environment, and caring staff and leadership on many shifts — factors that lead some residents and families to report very positive experiences. However, frequent and consistent complaints about understaffing, inconsistent care quality, medication and safety concerns, poor incident response, and facility maintenance problems create substantial risk and dissatisfaction for others. Reviews point to variability rather than uniform performance: when staffing and management practices align, outcomes and satisfaction are positive; when they do not, the facility can fall short in critical areas. Any assessment or decision should weigh these mixed reports, and prospective residents or families should inquire specifically about staffing ratios, medication safety protocols, incident reporting policies, recent management changes, and unit-specific conditions during tours or conversations with current families.

About Terrace Gardens Health Care Center

Terrace Gardens Health Care Center, which now goes by Fountain View Health & Rehabilitation Center, provides skilled nursing care, assisted living, independent living, memory care, and short-term rehabilitation all under one roof, and folks who want to see the place can schedule a private tour to walk around and meet staff and residents, which can be a good way to get a feel for things, and you'll find the place offers both private and semi-private rooms that come with their own bathrooms, cable TV, kitchenettes, phones, air conditioning, furniture, and fast internet, and there's a full range of services like housekeeping, on-site laundry, and move-in support, plus help with stuff like bathing, dressing, taking medication, and non-ambulatory care, and the staff is there around the clock, with a 24-hour call system and emergency alerts in every room. The dining setup includes a dining room with restaurant-style meals prepared by a professional chef, and special diets are handled as needed, so nearly everybody can eat comfortably, and there's an on-site hair salon along with lounges, an activity room, a movie theater, a game room, and things like art classes, music programs, and plenty of planned daily activities, so nobody has to sit alone unless that's what they like. Outdoor walking paths and garden spaces let folks get fresh air, and the rehab center means people needing physical, speech, or occupational therapy don't need to leave the building for care. Medicaid and Medicare are accepted, which can be a real help when it comes to paying for care, and there's good support for families dealing with long-term care and insurance questions. The place has advanced medical tools, long-term and post-acute recovery care, and staff trained to give attention to the health and dignity of each person, seeing that medical needs get met while also trying to provide some of the comforts of home. The building's been renovated for greater comfort, and common spaces are spacious, so folks in wheelchairs or with walkers have room to get around, while the whole setup is managed by Recover Care West, with a non-profit nursing home approach, and the facility is part of CHCA District III. Photos, cost information, and tour scheduling are all possible through their website, and you can talk to a Family Advisor if you've got questions about moving in, so families have ways to connect and learn about what's offered before they make up their minds.
