    Compassionate, clean, well-maintained senior care

I moved my mom here and am very grateful - the nurses and aides are outstanding, compassionate, attentive, and responsive to our questions. Her large, private room is beautiful, clean, has a sink and nice view (bathroom is shared); the place is older but well-maintained, with onsite rehab, hair/nails services and floor kitchens. Food is excellent (formal/family-style dining) and activities are plentiful - rosary, games, music, movie day and mobility-focused groups - though wheelchair needs and limited beds mean they could use more capacity. Warm, family-like atmosphere; I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive. Multiple reviewers praise the quality of care, the attentiveness and compassion of nursing staff and aides, and the facility’s clean, home-like environment. Commenters repeatedly describe staff as courteous, responsive, and family-like; several specifically mention dedicated nurses and attentive caregivers who make the transition to the facility peaceful and reassuring. The PACE program is cited as a success in at least one review, reinforcing the perception that care coordination and clinical services are well managed.

Care quality and clinical services are a standout theme. Reviewers highlight strong nursing coverage, detailed attention from caregivers, and on-site rehabilitation services focused on mobility. The rehab center and mobility-focused activities are mentioned positively, and several families expressed gratitude for how responsive staff were to questions and care needs. Where noted, transitions into and through the facility are described as peaceful and well-supported, which suggests effective clinical processes and communication.

Facility features receive consistent praise. Many reviewers emphasize spacious, private rooms with sinks and nice views; others note very large private rooms and that the facility is clean and beautiful. At the same time, one summary mentions shared bathrooms in some rooms, and the building is described as older — although reviewers also say it is well-maintained. The presence of floor kitchens and a home-like atmosphere contributes to a neighborhood feel that families appreciate. Overall, the physical plant is viewed as comfortable and maintained even if it is not brand new.

Dining and ancillary services are commonly cited as strengths. Several reviews call out good or excellent meals, with some praising a formal dining setup and others noting family-style dining options. One reviewer specifically said their family member liked the food, and reviewers also mention convenient services such as onsite hairdressers and nail services. These amenities, plus the presence of floor kitchens, help create a residential, less institutional experience.

Social programming and activities are frequent positives, with reviewers listing celebrations, rosary services, games, music, movie days, group activities, and visitor-friendly events. The facility appears to offer a range of programming that supports social engagement and family participation. However, there is a notable caveat: a few reviews indicate activity limitations for residents who use wheelchairs. While mobility-focused activities and rehab are available, accessibility constraints can reduce participation for some residents, which is an important area for improvement.

Two consistent operational themes emerge: value and capacity. Multiple reviewers explicitly call the facility cheaper and better value than alternatives, recommending it to others. That said, capacity is a recurring concern — reviewers indicate that the facility needs more beds, implying frequent full occupancy or wait times for admission. This high demand is positive in terms of reputation but may create access challenges for prospective residents.

In summary, Mercy Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility is viewed favorably across staffing, clinical care, amenities, dining, and the general living environment. Strengths include compassionate and responsive staff, strong nursing and rehab services, comfortable private rooms, good meals, and active social programs. Areas to watch are bed availability (capacity constraints), some accessibility issues for wheelchair users that limit participation in activities, and the presence of shared bathrooms in certain rooms within an otherwise well-maintained, older building. Overall reviewers recommend the facility and emphasize its high value and strong caregiving culture.

About Mercy Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility

Mercy Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility sits close to Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, which means residents can get hospital services if needed, and this nursing facility has four floors with 84 beds altogether, and each floor has a shared living room with a flat-screen TV and fireplace, so people have a place to gather if they want, plus spa bathing areas are there, along with kitchen and laundry rooms so folks can keep some independence if they like. The private rooms have their own temperature controls and Dutch doors, so residents can enjoy some activity while still keeping their privacy, and the dining and activity areas are big, making it easy for everyone to spend time together or join in recreational events. There's always staff around, and skilled nurses are on site 24/7, and the whole place uses a household model, meaning it tries to feel more like a home with attention to a peaceful atmosphere and person-centered care, and activities can be chosen based on what each resident enjoys or needs.

Residents can get post-acute care, and help with daily living like housekeeping, personal grooming, and companionship, and the rehab programs are available when someone needs to recover. There are both independent and assisted living services here, as well as home health assistance, and long-term care is available for those who need more support. People can set up appointments over the phone, and there's also an online portal-MyChart-that lets patients view test results, refill prescriptions, pay bills, and schedule appointments, and access to Catholic Health lab services and same-day blood work is part of what's offered. The LIFE program (PACE) is here too, giving all-inclusive health care for seniors who qualify for Medicare and Medicaid.

There are many safety features, like security cameras at exits, stairwells and elevators that only employees can use with their badges, and special covers on elevator buttons to keep residents from wandering off, plus free parking outside for visitors and wireless internet throughout the building. Visitors can bring laptops and do video chats with residents if needed, which some folks do if their family lives far away. Nursing care is specialized, and the patient experience is measured by things like how the nurses and doctors communicate, how staff responds, how rooms and bathrooms are kept clean, and whether the rooms stay quiet, with infection and accident ratings tracked for serious health events like blood clots, infections, catheter-related problems, or accidental cuts from medical care.

The Mercy Nursing Facility at OLV is part of this system, and the staff includes an Assistant Administrator and a Vice President of Long Term Care Operations, so management has experience in looking after seniors over time, and the facility itself keeps up with quality measures by joining the UB Institute for Person-Centered Care, which focuses on dignity and a sense of purpose for frail or vulnerable people. There's a record of awards, like the Providigm Embracing Quality Award every year since 2014, and being named a "Top Performing Nursing Home" by the New York State Department of Health since 2014, and the place has held a five-star rating from the CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System since 2015 and kept Providigm's QAPI Accreditation since 2013. Residents, patients, and families can count on free parking, secure internet, private rooms at non-governmental rates, and a home-like setting designed to make daily life safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible.
